View Full Version : Which version of the Saturn is best?

Saturn will probably be the next system I get. I've read in some threads that there are some revisions of the system, and I was just curious if there was one revesion that was better than the others. I didn't want to pick one up just to find out it was an inferior model.
Thanks,
Wes

Depends actually:
The First model (the ones with the Oval Buttons) is good for the Swap Trick, but it's a ass to install a Mod-Chip in.
The Second model (the ones with the Round Buttons) is great for a Mod-Chip, but it's kind of a pain for the Swap Trick.
That's it really, they're almost the same actually.

I'm guessing the Mod-Chip you're talking about is for PAL games correct? What is the Swap Trick?
I'm not really interested in mods at the moment, but maybe in the future. I'm just starting to get into case mods a little (ordered a Crystal case and a rainbow LED for my Dreamcast)

No, the Mod-Chip is for playing backup games on your Saturn (but you can't play imports with a Mod-Chip). The Swap Trick is tricking the Saturn to play a import or a backup disc (mostly a backup disc).
More info read here:

Thanks for clarifying. I may be interested in that Swap-Trick for imports, but I can't get those links to work.

Nevermind, I just had to copy and paste them.
Thanks for the links.

I wouldn't recommend the swap trick for either. It can damage the system.
There were a few more models in Japan, but nothing terribly substantial. There was one called the V-Saturn, made by JVC, but I don't think there's any difference from a regular model 2 other than branding. There was also the Hi-Saturn, made by Hitachi. I'm confused as to how many different versions of the Hi-Saturn were sold, but there was at least 2. One of them, the Hi-Saturn Navi, had a built-in GPS and an optional screen (like the PSOne screens). I believe it also had the VCD card built in to the system. It's extremely rare and expensive (and the GPS doesn't work), so I wouldn't necessarily recommend seeking one out. Beyond those, Sega also made some different versions of the model 2, but they only differed in the color of the system case.
