View Full Version : Should I get an xbox 360?

Stupid question I know.... But I've never spent 400$ on a game system before. the graphics look supurb, and I love what they have done with Xbox live arcade.
I guess what I am really asking is if the people who have gotten one feel like they have gotten thier money's worth? Also - how real are the reliability concerns? I hear that they can break down, but it's really hard to tell if it's just a few random systems or a larger problem.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

I have easily gotten $400 worth of use out of mine. XBL Arcade is awesome.
As far as breaking down, it's just like any other consumer product in the early life stages. Problems here and there but nothing terrible. Good news is that MS is quick to replace if something does go wrong.

Yes. Go buy one tomorrow.
You get MORE than your money's worth out of it.
For a start the machine upscales existing DVDs to whatever the max resolution your TV is, it's got brilliantly clear voice chat, and a superb GUI. It's got the amazing Xbox Live Arcade which is surprisingly well implemented, along with a marketplace filled with free content such as movie trailers, game demos, and gamer icons.
The games are coming out thick and fast, and has one of the highest quality to crap ratios I've seen so far on any console.
It's got awesome console exclusive games like Oblivion, PGR3, Chromehounds, Prey, Dead or Alive 4, Condemned, and Amped 3, along with new up and coming must-have exclusive games like DOAX2, Halo 3, Gears of War, Dead Rising, N3 Ninety Nine Nights, Test Drive Unlimited, Saints Row, etc etc etc.
the machine's got one of the best controllers I've ever used, and I love mine.
I've had mine since day one, and I've played on it every single day since purchase. Don't hesitate dropping $400 on it.
As for reliability, as I said, I've played mine every day for the past 9 months, with no real hassles. you might get the odd crash once in a while when you play online, but that's about it.

I say don't buy one yet. If you are adverse to buying one now, there is no reason you can't hold out a little longer. I think waiting for the other consoles to hit the market will enable you to make a more informed decision about what to buy.
Being a late adopter has it's advantages. Sit back, grab a cold one and wait to see what happens. 8-)

I'd wait a couple weeks. I've been hearing that there is supposed to be a new 360 bundle out then with Project Gotham 3, 4 months of Live, 1250 marketplace points and a premium system for $400. Friday, August 11th is supposed to be the date.
Not sure if this is true yet though but I'm 100% buying one if it is.

There's a pawn shop up the road selling a used one for $250. I don't know if there's some catch or something but it comes with a controller and cords. Even if it lacks something you can easily make it up by hitting a game store and replacing it. Since I just invested into a DS Lite I don't plan on getting another new system for at least a few more months. On top of that, the place has one of the worst return policies on games and electronics so I'm better off buying a new anyways, since I like the smell of a new game system. :)

Yes, go buy it now! Just look for dead pixels before you leave the store. Oh, wait, wrong console. Sorry.
All kidding aside, there have not been a lot of systems breaking down. There have been people who have had to send their systems in (even on DP) and MS has been quite good customer service wise.
My major problem has been the fact that Matt can't seem to get a headset to work to save his life. I think it took three months for him to get one to work.
I myself had DRE in the first week, but never since.
It is worth 400$ for sure. Sadly, this worth really does derive from the Xbox Live Arcade. There are already a lot of great titles out, and the onslaught of Microsoft Game Studios published games is about to begin.
Also, Dead Rising is coming out on the 8th.
You will surely get your moneys worth. Marketplace is a big bonus for the 360. There are a lot of demos you can download before you pay for the games. There are other reasons of course, but that is one that sticks out.

To help you with your decision, I thought I'd list the games I have along with small opinions of em:
Xbox 360 Retail :-
Condemned (exclusive) - short, but oh so very sweet. It'll make you jump out your seat on several occasions, and its the first first-person-melee-and-survival-horror game ever to my knowledge. 8 / 10
Hitman Blood Money - Looks good, don't let the stupid training mission put you off. Gets better the more you play. Pretty good. 7 / 10
Quake 4 (console exclusive) - Poor PC conversion in single player. Has a few slowdown issues and doesn't look as amazing as it should in HD, but Multiplayer more than makes up for it. Fast, furious, and frantic, but also tactical and a helluvalot of fun. Comes with Quake 2 as well which can be played in both single and multiplayer. Q4 Single player 5 / 10, Q4 Multiplayer 9 / 10, Q2 Single player 9 / 10, Q2 Multiplayer 7 / 10.
PGR3 (exclusive) - Awesome graphics, constant framerate, awesome sound and lots of unlockable extras. Handles like a dream and there's lots of challenges and downloadable content to keep you busy. 9 / 10
Kameo (exclusive) - The first disappointing game on the 360. I thought it was going to be more of an adventure game, but it turns out it's a platform game with fighting elements. Not my cup of coffee. 5 / 10
Full Auto (exclusive) - Second most disappointing game on 360. Has severe slowdown issues on many levels and while the combat and rewind functions are fun at first, they get old quick. Gameplay is fun for a while though. More of a rental than a purchase. 6 / 10
Amped 3 (exclusive) - A total surprise. Beautiful and has ZERO draw distance issues at all, or loading for that matter. Superb snowboarding / toobing / snowmobile fun wrapped up in a hilarious story and just gave me a smile on my face from start to finish. Superb. 9 / 10
Need For Speed Most Wanted - Surprisingly good effort this time around. Nowhere near as crappy as NFS Underground 1 or 2. This one has a full city to free roam around, eye popping graphics, a good sense of speed, and a solid soundtrack. Doesn't last long though. 8 / 10
Ridge Racer 6 (exclusive) - You'll either love it or hate it. Good news is it's old fashioned Ridge. Bad news is they've added nothing new apart from the World XPlorer mode (which is HUGE). Doesn't look like a true next gen title, but my god is it fun, especially online. Comes with Pac Man included too. Great stuff. 8 / 10
King Kong - FPS with lovely graphics, good solid story, absolutely ear shattering clear multichanneled sound, but only lasts a few hours. If it was longer and had some sort of multiplayer, it'd be a brilliant game. 7 / 10
Madden 06 - It's missing a shitload of features that I was expecting, but the gameplay's solid, and graphics are rather lovely indeed. Online is spot on. 7 / 10
Oblivion (console exclusive) - A frickin' masterpiece. One of the greatest games ever written. HUGE, brilliant storyline, absolutely gorgeous, and awe inspiring sound... words can't describe how good this is, and theres loads of downloadable content to make it even better. The best thing to happen to gaming since Mario 64. 11 / 10
Moto GP 06 (exclusive) - Would've been really good, but it's far to difficult to be really enjoyable. Keeping the bike on the road around corners needs almost zen-like skills. Shame, cos otherwise it would've been great. 5 / 10
Table Tennis (exclusive) - Not much in it, no real story mode, very limited options, but it doesn't really matter. For a budget title, there's enough gameplay in multiplayer to make it worth the entry fee. 7 / 10
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter (exclusive version - all the others are different) - Top notch. Jawdropping graphics, silky smooth controls, well thought out level design, and fantastic co-op multiplayer makes this a must-purchase game. 9 / 10
Tomb Raider Legend - OMG! A decent Tomb Raider game! Smooth, Pretty, good level design, and a nice subtle difficulty curve make it interesting. It's also more action orientated than other TR games. I like it. 8 / 10
Dead or Alive 4 (exclusive) - The 2nd best 3D fighting game right now. Only beaten by the almighty Virtua Fighter 4. Truly awesome, deep, and with a multiplayer that grabs you by the balls and won't let you go till the sun's up... 3 days later. Oh, did I mention it's gorgeous too in HD? 10 / 10
Battlefield 2 (exclusive version) - Less techy than the PC version, far better multiplayer than the other console versions. Single player's more of a practice session for multiplayer, but when you hit multiplayer, you'll see how brightly this game shines. Fantastic stuff. 9 / 10
Burnout Revenge (exclusive version) - WOW! What a vast improvement over the XB / PS2 versions. Graphics look 5 times better now, with paint stripping from the vehicles etc, it's almost double the speed of the previous version, and multiplayer has been TOTALLY redesigned and improved upon no end. Probably the best online racing game ever created. 9 / 10
Perfect Dark Zero (exclusive) - Graphics nice, sound nice, single player decidedly average. Online vs multiplayer is total crap, but Co-Op mode is real good fun. 6 / 10
Fight Night Round 3 - Best graphics on the system here, backed up by a solid single player mode, and a supremely fun multiplayer game. 9 / 10
Farcry Instincts Predator (exclusive) - 2 games for the price of one.. both largely forgettable in single player apart from a few really well done set pieces and stunningly pretty volumetric effects. However (and this is a big one) Multiplayer is fantastic, and even more fantastic is the fact it has a BUILT IN LEVEL EDITOR that you not only can make your own maps with, but you can also share them online with others and play them with foes from all over the globe. I've probably spent more time on the map editor than I have on any other game. Truly amazing. Deserves 10 / 10 for the multiplayer and map editor alone.
Tony Hawk American Wasteland - Port of the Xbox / PS2 version. Nothing new added, and the TH series is starting to show it's age. It's still good fun though, and multiplayer aint bad. I just wish they spent more time on this version of it. 6 / 10
Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires - Another one you'll either love or hate. Me personally, I love it. Takes the DW franchise into tactical territory, and comes out looking rather sweetly, especially as it's priced as a budget game. There's a LOT of value in this one. 6 scenarios (each with 25 levels), plus the free missions and create character modes means you'll have lots to slash your way through. Shame it still looks like a cleaned up Xbox1 game though. 8 / 10
Lord of the Rings - Battle for Middle Earth 2 (console exclusive) - The first RTS for the machine, and a rather good one. Has a solid storyline (in both good and evil campaigns), solid graphics, and excellent gameplay, both online and offline. Has a touch of slowdown when the screen gets crowded, but on the whole it's rather nice. Havent tried the new DLC campaign yet though, but I'm looking forward to grabbing it soon. 8 / 10
Prey (console exclusive) - Awesome graphics, awesome sound, awesome story. Let down by a short single player and horrendously crippling god awful lag in multiplayer. Multiplayer's so bad it's almost unplayable, as it doesn't matter how good you are, the host will ALWAYS win (unless he's a mongoloid chimpanzee with 1 hand). Let's hope they fix the lag issue with an update. Both single player and multiplayer are EXTREMELY reminiscent of Doom 3 and Quake 4. 9 / 10 for single player, 3 / 10 for multiplayer.
Call of Duty 2 - This isn't what I'd call "Enjoyable". It's so much of a harrowing experience that it really puts you in the shoes of those poor troopers who had to go through WW2. It's the first game that's so realistic that I felt uncomfortable playing it for long periods of time. It really got to me, shot my nerves up, and made me have to take a break after each level... but I never stopped playing it. a truly groundbreaking, beautiful, harrowing story with sound and graphics that really put you in the moment. Added to a fantastically fun multiplayer, this game HAS to be owned by everyone with a 360. 10 / 10
Chromehounds (exclusive) - Single player is as thin as Kate Moss after a crack binge, but it's supposed to be. The meat of this game is in it's multiplayer, and multiplayer, quite simply, kicks arse. I've clocked up nearly 50 hours so far fighting online, and there's no sign of me stopping yet. 8 / 10
XBOX LIVE ARCADE:
Smash TV - It's Smash TV for gawd's sake! Big Money, Big Prizes. I LOVE IT! 10 / 10
Geometry Wars (exlusive) - Twitch shooting at it's finest. Rock solid, hectic, and fun fun fun. It's a must purchase. It could only be better if it was multiplayer. 9 / 10
Hexic HD - Comes with the hard drive, and is a solid puzzle game that'll keep you coming back for more. It's also got really nice music, and very clear, sharp graphics. 8 / 10
Astropop - Think Space Invaders meets Arkanoid meets Klax. You'll get the picture of how good this is. 8 / 10
Bankshot Billiards 2 - Expensive at 1200 points, but worth it. Very good ball physics, multiple camera angles, and a whole slew of play modes. Tends to have the occasional glitch online though. 7 / 10
Bejeweled 2 - For a puzzler, this game is TOUGH. Haven't played it much, cos it seems no matter what I do I can't get past level 9 in action mode. Pisses me off no end. You're better off with Jewel Quest. 6 / 10
Cloning Clyde (exclusive) - Now this is GREAT! Lost Vikings meets Lemmings all wrapped up in brilliantly rendered graphics, well thought out levels, and a sick sense of humour. Oohh if only it had more than 35 levels. 8 / 10
Crystal Quest - Yet another dual stick shooter, and probably the weakest. It's fun, but is no real challenge. You'll finish it in a day or two at most. 6 / 10
Feeding Frenzy - Not really my kind of game. Eat the fish to grow bigger while dodging fish bigger than you. It's about as exciting as it sounds, as in not very exciting at all. 5 / 10
Frooger - Yay! it's frogger with prettier graphics.... oh wait... it's Frogger with crippling unexcusable lag in multiplayer, and control input issues. Not a good conversion. 5 / 10
Galaga - No improvements to the original arcade game, no multiplayer at all, but it is faithful to the original, right down to the "no enemies firing at you" glitch you can take on the first level. Still a good fun game, but it'd be nice if they actually bothered to update it a little with HD graphics like they do with most arcade games. 6 / 10
Gauntlet - It's gauntlet. It's 4 Player online gauntlet. It's 4 player online gauntlet with voice chat. It's 4 player online Gauntlet with improved HD graphics. Bliss. 10 / 10
Jewel Quest - Bejeweled with nicer artwork, better difficulty curve, and added features such as differing board shapes and sizes. Tough as nails, but damn good. 8 / 10
Joust - Marginally improved graphics, added Co-Op and Vs online play, but still old fashioned Joust. I'm not a huge fan of the game. Probably one of the weaker XBLA games. 5 / 10
Marble Blast Ultra (exclusive) - Lovely to look at, plenty of levels to work your way through, hidden easter eggs to find, and fun (if slightly frustrating at times) online components. Still not as good as Marble Madness was though. 7 / 10
Mutant Storm Reloaded (exclusive) - Another dual stick shooter, this one has different shaped areas and lovely graphics, but somehow lacks something that the others have. It's tough as nails though and will definitely last a long time. 7 / 10
Outpost Kaloki X (exclusive) - Simplified Strategy game which looks nice, plays superbly, and has LOTS and LOTS of scenarios and downloadable episodes to keep you busy. One of the most under-rated XBLA games yet. 8 / 10
Robotron 2084 - IT'S FRICKIN ROBOTRON WITH UPDATED GRAPHICS AND MULTIPLAYER! IT IS GOD! 10 / 10
Uno (exclusive) - Boring in single player, but is one of the most socially interactive games on 360 in multiplayer. Lots of us DP players have played it together till the wee small hours of the morning. Addictive as crack, even if it is a simple card game. 8 / 10
Wik - Didn't like it at all. Platform game with iffy controls, boring story and dull level design. Looks lovely though. 4 / 10
Zuma - Yay! Puzzloop / Ballistic! Looks great, handles very well on the analog stick, has great graphical style and fun music to back it up. Loads of levels and a tough difficulty will keep you playing for ages to come. 8 / 10
That's all the games I have right now, and as you can see, the good ones far outweigh the bad ones...
It's a beautiful system. I couldn't resist "jumping in" to the next gen and bought one as soon as I was able to. The graphics, the amount of extra "stuff" that they can shove into the game, the dashboard, the options, the way that the system compartmentalizes your stuff like a PC....it's all wonderful.
The best? Achievements. Sheer genious and a great way for the consumer to suck every last ounce out of a game. My friend played Gun on Xbox and I played it on 360. He had no motivation to go back in and clean up the game after finishing the story. I did.
Don't even listen to shit about the system "crapping out". ANY mass-manufactured item will have bad ones. You'll be hearing the same about the PS3 and Wii very soon. People naturally tend to piss on other people's parades. My 360 "crapped out" (not really....it had a sticky tray and so I voluntarily sent it back). It took 3 days and I had a new one in my hands. Not just that, but while Microsoft were at it, they were kind enough to give me the NEW Xbox 360 with the new cut away "anti-scratch" disc tray and the new cooler chipset installed. THAT'S great customer service. It runs significantly quieter than the first gen one and has had no hiccups at all. I would assume that these should be the ones that are on the market now.

i took the dive, and never came back up. picked up 4 games, kameo (free game), prey, table tennis, and burnout revenge. and I love the system, especially waiting for dead rising and gears of war. My thought is that this system for the games (60 a pop) should first be tested to make sure you truly want the game. I've gotten used to being yelled at by ppl who will buy a game, and then yell at me because they can't return it, and only get 20 bucks for it. so try demos and make sure you truly want the game. either that or buy used, most 360 games i've gotten in have been in great condition.

I would wait, but I don't really do the online thing. I can think of many classic titles I would spend the $400 on before getting a 360 and I am also waiting for the Wii. Will have to get one someday, just not now. Also waiting for that inevitable later, less problematic hardware revision. The only company who's launch hardware I trust to have the necessary longevity is Nintendo's.
Depends on what kind of gamer you are. If you are enthralled with what next gen has to offer, then go for it ASAP. The 360 is a great system, a sure bet, has an excellent controller, and will have Halo 3. Whatever you do, make sure you buy it new. Don't let eB/Lamestop pull a fast one on you. Games are fine to buy used, but I would be wary of any system that has been in someone elses hands, especially something as complicated as a 360.

well considering i work at "lamestop" and bought my used, i will have to say that we check them rather well. Especially when we know all the problems that could arise, and if they have anything wrong w/ them, they get refurbed, hence why you don't see too many in stock at our stores.

Wik - Didn't like it at all. Platform game with iffy controls, boring story and dull level design. Looks lovely though. 4 / 10
Wik is brilliant once you get into it. It's mechanics are original, different, and completely off the wall. You'll be put off at first since you can't move without jumping or latching onto something. It takes time to adjust, but once you get good, the game comes alive.

In my opinion, if your low on money, and you had to pick PS3 or X360...i would have to pick PS3, because it still has a year to come out, which means the tech is probably going to be even better then Xbox360. A perfect example is when PS2 first came out, it was a great step for gaming, but then later the Xbox came out. There was a debate on which was better, but an example is that games like Doom 3 were able to run on it, not ps2, and much more high quality games were released on it, like Halo. But both systems had its high's and lows.

Upcoming games Also make 360 a must have, gears of war , 2 rpgs from the final fantasy creator ,blue dragon and lost odyssey. And mass effect

You answered your own question there LOL
I decided on a 360 simply because it did have some exclusives and it would cost me a lot more to upgrade or buy a new computer just to play the same games. The 360 is worth every penny as far as I'm concerned. Just Live and the arcade games is a great enough experience to justify the cost.
I was playing Oblivion on my older computer (64hrs in) and I couldn't believe what I was missing graphically when I first popped in into my console :D

I am a proud veteran of said establishment (several years in college and between jobs afterward) and would even work there again if I had to. I dislike the fact that they were allowed to buy their only real competitor (not totally their fault, the US is beginning to love monopolies), were basically the ones wholly responsible for the lack of respect game packaging gets here in the US when it comes to used games, the TOTAL lack of respect their incredibly overworked store managers get (read: the people who are generally the ones who really care treated as common thieves), and their continuing Gestapo-esque application of greedy policies which force employees to basically harass customers as they enter the store & hawk items said employees should receive commission for. Yes, retail is a tough, tough business, and Walmart is much, much worse, but have some respect for both your workers and your product. Thus, Lamestop. My gripe is not with the employees. I empathized with them before I even worked there and hate the fact they have to bother everyone who walks through the door to collect a ridiculously low paycheck. End of Rant.
Back to topic, (and I want to stress that there was no offense meant Crazycarl), issues with used systems tend NOT to be the fault of employees. Almost no one who works at GameStop is a technician. I was simply warning a fellow DP'er of the pitfalls of used equipment, especially in the age of disc-based games. You could drop a cartridge system off a building and it would probably work. Sneeze on a PS2, XBox, 360, etc. and you might start getting DRE's or worse. Better to be safe than sorry with a $400.00 item.
As for Refurbs, I recommend staying away from them entirely, UNLESS they come packaged in an official Microsoft, Sony, etc. box and have a warranty from the manufacturer. GameStop refurbs are used systems that didn't work in the store that have simply been opened up, cleaned, packaged in a generic Gamestop-branded cardboard box filled with spray foam and slapped with a upcharge of $10 (read: $10 for a used, probably busted system in a nifty cardboard box). The old bait and switch in full effect. People returned Refurbs with a frequency much, much higher than that of used systems. In fact, said frequency was so much higher that it got to the point where some of us quietly started to steer people away from them. Even the store manager (who ALWAYS played by the rules) was very skeptical, began to warn people and play up the in-store replacement policy. Only buy OFFICIAL Refurbs.

Wait till Gears of War, or the first price drop if your really not sure. But if your into fighting games. Street Fighter II turbo on Xbox live arcade is worth it alone. Heck , the arcade itself is .

Most of the 'Exclusive' games people have mentioned also came out on PC, like Oblivion, Condemend, Battlefield 2 , Prey, why not just get them for PC? That is, if you have a good machine.
Condemned is nowhere near as good as the 360 version, almost as good graphically, but loses all the feel with keyboard and mouse. It just simply doesn't have that claustrophobic feel when you can spin around in a split second. It's just like the PC Halo port, nowhere near as good as the console version, loses all the feel.
Oblivion and Prey are the same on PC if you have a high-end system.
Battlefield 2 on PC is TOTALLY different to the 360 version. 2 completely different games. Hence why the 360 version is Battlefield 2: Modern Combat as opposed to plain old Battlefield 2.
Of course, the big bonus about the console versions is that you've not got to struggle with balancing a keyboard and mouse on your lap when sat on the couch, leaning back, chilling out and viewing it on a big screen. You've got a comfy joypad instead. Feels better in my opinion.
Plus you get achievements, are able to have voice chat with friends at the same time, and are able to use your PC for other things while you play without affecting game performance.
There's nothing wrong with PC gaming if you have enough dough to spend on a rig that can handle games as well as the 360, but I find that running a virus checker, bit torrent, FTP, and MSN in the background reduces game performance significantly. It's easier just to play them on my 360 with equally nice graphics and be able to use all my other PC programs without affecting the speed of my game.

Thanks for the info! That bundle sounds sweet. Thank all of you for the feedback. I wanted to get one - but just wanted to make sure before I did it. Now off to sell some of my trade pile to help finance the operation :)

I love my 360, hell I haven't even setup Xbox Live yet and I still love it.
