Started playing the 2 titles on this again and remembering how I got into rpgs in the first place with the first FF and Dragon Warrior.

Once I remembered where I was, I started for the Temple of Fiends Revisited, my old NP FF guide in tow. Started remembering some item and spell names were changed too. I remembered that working through FF1 in Origins wasn't was tough and frustrating as I remembered on the NES, due to the system upgrades. I was surprised that I was able to get through the Marsh Cave alot easier then I did when I was younger!

FF2j- the black sheep of the FF family. I restarted with this one, checked a faq to see where I was and what I had to do next at Poft. Reading through started realizing I should have split my White and Black magic powers up alot earlier, then giving them to Maria.

Some of the more difficult dungeons aren't nearly as hard as the NES version, namely the Ice Cave, Sea Shrine, Mirage Tower/Sky Castle. I find the Sea Shrine and Kraken are the opposite of each other on the PS version. The Sea Shrine is simple and Kraken is surprising tough since Lit / Magic in general doesn't do much damage and he still has his bitchin' physical attack.

Any suggestions then for the party in FF2j?

I've only played through FF2j once and started it again another time for a project of mine (I was planning on writing a walkthrough for it) when I lost the cd. I never bothered to get another one because my interest in the game was waning.

Do you know about the Select/Cancel glitch and some of the others? People have told me that these glitches don't work in FFO but I haven't tested to find out. FF2j has boundary glitches like the Power Peninsula in FF1, only there are more of them and they're more noticable.

I just started a file in Final Fantasy 2 on Origins as well. I played the original on NES last summer (using that old Nintendo Power guide too, hehe), so I figured I should play the next game this summer. I've only tried out the original on Origins for a few minutes. I'm not really in the mood to play through that game again just yet, even if there are a lot of changes.

At first, I thought Final Fantasy 2 was a bit dull (and, honestly, I think the first game isn't the most exciting RPG ever either), but once I reached the first dungeon, it picked up. It just really gets off to a lame start since I spent over an hour trudging around the world map and visiting half a dozen cities before I got to any serious dungeon exploring. This world map just rubs me the wrong way. It's definitely bothersome that you can dash everywhere else in the game but on the world map (obviously, the Famicom version didn't have a dash feature anywhere, I know), and the slow pace is exacerbated when you combine that with how huge and largely empty it is and the enemies which can instantly change from weak peons to super strong beasts that will instantly slaughter your whole party if you step one tile too far into a region you shouldn't be at (yet the game gives no warning to you). And then there's the fact that "flee" is all but a joke. I think I've gotten it to work ONCE, and in a battle where I didn't need it. Anytime when flee is actually useful, it won't work, unlike the original where fleeing saved my ass a million times over.

So... yeah, I'm happy I can get to the Chocobo Forest now. :P I still eagerly await getting an airship, though. The Chocobo song is sure damn annoying in this game. I don't really like the song much period, but this version is so repetitive and barebones that it drives me insane after awhile. o_O

But, even as negative as I may sound, I am enjoying the game now. It obviously has more story than the original, and while I'm not a plot-fiend, it's nice to have a little bit of it. And while the game is very easy for the most part (I'm guessing that's more the case in the remake than on Famicom), the character building is easily more interesting than anything about the first game's gameplay. I don't know if I'm doing a great job with it, though. I'm keeping everybody with the weapon class they started with, and I don't use magic a whole lot with anybody. I've dumped most of my spells into Maria, but I gave Cure and an attack spell to everybody else too. I think my Maria may be a little screwed up, though, since as far as I've gotten, she's still only at 60 HP. Since she's in the back row with a bow, she almost never gets hit and thus hasn't gained much HP. She's got almost no evasion too. Unfortunately, when she does get hit, she often dies in one hit at this point. Oh well, as long as I can get through the game, things are fine, and if it starts getting too hard, I'll figure things out.
