When you work through a rpg, do you just have to explore every nook and cranny of the game to get all special items, play all the side-games and do everything before you finish off the game?

When I play an RPG, I usually try to leave some optional areas unexplored, just so I have a reason to come back to the game later on. For my first time through, the only secrets I uncover are storyline details or hidden characters.

No way. I only bother to unlock hidden characters and I used a guide to do it. RPGs are so numerous and tedious these days that I never have time to do all the stuff in them and a lot of it is silly. Usually, I read up on the side quests and only do the ones that interest me. In Suikodens, I do basically everything, but that's the only exception.

I try and do as much of it as I can while playing through it, but once I beat it, that sucker is OUTTA THERE.

The last 2 games I played through more than once were FF7, and FF8

Dragon Warrior 7, 100 hours, you think I'm gonna go back and get all the extra's? Ha! no friggin chance

Suikoden 3 - SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I beat it with chris, you think I'm gonna go back through and play through the last 20-30 hours of the game with the OTHER 2 chars? no way!

I DO try and get a bunch of the stuff while I'm playing, but I'm not too worried about the stuff I miss :)

I used to but these days I just do the main quest as you need a guide to find the hidden room behind the curtain but can only enter after saving some kid in some cave and getting some gem for a satue's eyes.. you get the idea.. If I find it when playing fine.. if I had to pull out a guide i dump the rpg.

I agree with Raedon here though.

me, I do as much as i can and want to do before fighting the final boss, then go back and play around with other side-quests and stuff I missed before I feel like starting a new game.

I have a ritual for RPGs
The FIRST Time I play an RPG I get the feel of it, talk to some people, probably level up once or twice, buy a few things, etc.
Then I delete my game and Start again.
The SECOND Time I play I play as honestly as possible, no cheats, no guides, I don't make decisions that I feel will be BETTER for the game, but make decisions that "I" want to make. Hence the whole pouint of ROLE playing game... bugs me when people just keep doing what's "best" and not what THEY want to do... detracts from the whole idea of it I find.
Then when I beat it, or get horribly stuck and will NEVER get any farther,
I delete my game (or start a new one if there's room considering the limitations of soem console game)
Which begins my THIRD Time playing, I read a few FAQs, find out how to do certain things easier, find hidden characters/items I didn't find the first and other stuff.

I try to do as much as I can but I go through spells of games so it can take me a few years.

Quote Alex -

I do this exact same thing with VERY GOOD games. Unfortunately, I haven't played a VERY GOOD RPG since FF7, and FF8. (Suikoden 3 came close, but I HATE recruiting characters twice, and that's kinda the basis of the game)

I normally try to do everything, I like to see it all. Only using a guide when absolutely necassary, otherwise it takes the challenge and fun out of the game.

Yup I try like hell to find everything, complete every sidequest, and max out my characters the first time through and if there are in game cheats (no gameshark steroids) to be found you better believe I use them, the older I get the less time I have to go through these RPGs aimlessly for months on end :D but for all the hardcore RPGers who do it that way, this gaming vet solutes you :rocker:
