i've been debating shrinking my collection to free up some finances to make a few much needed alterations to my life..

alas im wondering if i should sell or should keep

i love my collection and cannot bear to realy sell, but im getting to a point in my life where i feel i must do something to change it slightly... if i do decide to sell anyhing up should i go for my earlier stuff (where the better money is) or the newr stuff (which could be easier to replace if i ever want back) im at a loss for ideas

I was thinking of selling my sealed dreamcast collection few days ago because I can't decide if I can complete it.

I have decided to stick to the course and try to complete it.

You should make a decision you wouldn't regret in the near future. But in case you want to replace your collection, you should probably sell off the newer ones first.

Just my 2 cents

We'd need to know the changes you wish to make to your life before comparing their value to your collection. This is particularly true for anyone posting on this website...

Life vs. Collecting? Sounds silly, but it's what we often ask ourselves...

Whenever asked this question I usually state the following:

-your collection probably isn't worth as much as you think it is, especially if you want to quickly liquidate it.

-ultimately this will cost you money when you start buying all that stuff back.

sell what you don't play any more or/and have little interest in

sell big ticket items you wouldn't miss too much

bottom line if you feel you should sell then you should.

I agree with Kid Ice. I sold a few games around Christmas because I was desperate for money, and I already regret parting with a few of the games. I made nice money of a couple of rare games I had, but I didn't make as much as I was hoping, especially not after ebay fees.

Sell whatever you can quickly sell right now. Especially if it's something you think you'll be able to a) live without and b) easily replace later on should you decide to buy it again.

As for what to sell - if you have some items that usually go for a decent amount of $, sell those first. Bank that money and put it toward whatever your new goals are (buying land, investing, whatever.) If you have a lot of items that get a few $ but won't miss them, sell those next.

Whatever you wind up selling, don't regret it. You've gotta do what you've gotta do. And if you decide not to sell anything, that's AOK too. :)

What is in your collection, man?

Try doing it in this order:

1. Spare consoles (if you have four or five NES systems, a couple of them gotta go) or games that you have doubles of.

2. Systems that you can easily pick up again at a flea market, thrift store or lawn sale (N64, Super NES, Genesis, NES, PSX). If you have a Neo Geo or Turbo Duo, it may prove to be a bitch when you want to replace those items. You may want to hold onto those as long as possible.

3. Single games that command a little money. I say that because I'd rather have a large collection of more common/mid-range items than a small collection of high end items. I'm speaking as a gamer. The reason I recommend single games is because you often lose money when selling things in "lots" since it is usually just a reseller or some guy who happens to own a store that buys them. I never make decent money selling games (or systems) in lots.

You can change your life without selling anything. My advice, if you need the money badly, sell what you will be able to part with and not look back on. If you just want a change and don't need the money, box things up and move them to some place safe, but out of sight. I know my collection has been in boxes before, but it is easy to bring it back. Selling something and buying it later can be expensive or complicated

I agree whole-heartedly with this. Ive collected stuff for years now, and now being so anal with condition and completeness, I tend to sell stuff that isn't up to par.

But if you are even "ON THE FENCE" about selling some of your stuff, it shows that there is still some doubt, and with doubt comes regret, and seller's regret is a lot worse then buyer's remorse. The grass is always greener on the other side, they say.

If you need money fast, and it's not in the thousands, try and get a pay-day loan. If you don't need it fast, change some of your spending habits, i.e-no more renting/going to the movies, spending money at restaurants etc. It will add up.

Or, just sell anything else besides your collection. People will buy anything these days especially on epay. Or just post stuff on Craigslist. It's free and you pay no fees for selling stuff there.

One thing about collections is that if you in fact do have rare stuff like R7-8-9 stuff, it's hard to come back and re purchase and will likely cost you more.

Just some tips. Good luck

I am also thinking about selling off a portion of my collection once the wii and the PS3 comes out to help reduce the cost. I have a little bit of a plan that I am going to go by when the time comes. For instance, I have a pretty large collection of PS2 RPGs that I just don't have time for. The first thing I think I am going to get rid of would be my Suikoden collection. I know they are great games and all, but I've barely touched any of them. I have all of them except part 2 and tactics. I figure selling each one individually should get me close to the $100 range with the inclusion of the original suikoden. Then there are a bunch of nintendo games I have that I bought just because they were cheap. I'm not going for a complete collection of NES so I will have no major problems letting a few of those go. I want to keep my games that are R5 and up since I know that they will be more difficult to find again. So basically after the suikoden games go, I'm gonna go through all of my R4s and see which ones I can part with, then the R3s and so on. I won't, however, sell any of the games I've had since I was a little guy do to sentimental value. My reasoning for selling the games is to get more games though so it may be a different scenario all together where it won't kill me as much to see some of the games go. I just figured I'd put in my 2 cents on how I plan to go about it.

Don't sell. I regret everything that I have ever sold and had only one of. Ended up buying most of it back at a later time. If you have mulitples sell and keep the one in best condition.

EDIT:

After reading your post more throughly. I understand that feeling you mention. Just feel like what the heck am I doing with this stuff. Also feel too old. However I always feel better about it after time and know I made the right decision about keeping my stuff. There is nothing wrong being older and being a game collector. Besides you can always pass it on if you have any baby DP'ers hehe.

yeah thats also another good point, I want to keep a lot of my games I've had since i was a child to give to my kids and my grand kids some day in the future. I don't think I'm too old for them or anything, but I know for sure that when my kids don't want to finish thier dinner or finish thier homework, that classic game room will be locked up for the night. Then again they may think old games suck when PS5 and xbox 1080 comes out.

yeah I would sell star wars stuff any day over my games. Star Wars figures aren't just what they use to be as far as worth. Keep the really rare ones and toss the junk I say.
