I might be getting a 360 soon so I was wondering if there was a specific hardware version that's better than the other, like how the Samsung drive Xbox's are the most reliable of the 3 versions.
On some sites I see people refer to the Samsung versions of 360's but I really don't have any idea what they are are talking about. Does it have to do with Samsung's being easier to hack or something?

The firmware on the Samsung DVD drives can be hacked/flashed, allowing you to play bootlegs. That's the only plus side to having a Samsung drive. The others perform just as well.

Right, but people that flash 'em have no idea when and how M$ is going weed them out. Probably just happen one day through XBL. I think its too big of a risk, but thats my 2 cents

How can you even tell without pulling one out of the box?

I dont think you can. The way to tell is the design of the dvd tray when it is open.
Words of wisdom: There is only one version/generation of the 360. There may be very little variations internally like the dvd drive but thats just about it.
Some people are claiming online they have version 2 or 3 of the Xbox 360. That just doesnt exist. The rare problem of the 360 freezing is across the board. There is no specific way to find out if you 360 would be less susceptible to freeze.

norkusa: I would suggest that, if you were to buy an Xbox 360 today, it would - in all probability - be the most recent (and, I guess, the best) revision of the hardware, firmware, etc.
The Xbox 360 continues to sell like hotcakes. With that in mind, I would imagine that each replenishment shipped to retail are, indeed, the latest "models". Therefore, I think it would be fair to say that you can buy an Xbox 360 with a certain amount of confidence, in that you'll be buying the best possible version.
