No, you can't buy them at the hardware store (Unless you live in Japan maybe?) Trust me, I've tried, they all look at me like I'm a freak and am just making up stuff (Even after I SHOW THEM the bit, they say it doesn't exist)

3.8 mm also opens SNES carts. 4.5 can be used for Genesis carts and even some game systems, (SNES console, the TG-16 I think,)

Ahem--my previous post was strictly a joke!!! I have security bits as well, that I purchased from ebay, after also visiting a hardware store and being told to stop smoking up or something like that, because there was no such thing as these "security bits".

They have them at radio shack, wallmart, canadian tire, and electronic stores in my area. They don't carry the 3.8 specifically but they come dam close. I use a 7/64 that I got a radio shack in a package of like 20 jewlers screwdrivers. It works great, I just have to press a little bit. Wallmart had a 3.0mm I think and a 4.0mm jewler screw driver. The electronic store has a bunch of different sizes but not exactly 3.8 mm...

I would check there first before buying online.

i bought mine from sylentwulf through ebay. i think you need the exact size 3.8mm, it fits in there perfectly, others are probably slightly too big or slightly too small to fit in.

Intersting note about MCM electronics, I bought a tool kit from them long ago, it arrived cracked (The Case, bo big deal obviously) but as you said, they will NOT TELL YOU the shipping charges. When I got the invoice and found out the shipping was more than the tool kit, I reported the to the better business bereau and internet fraud website. I was pretty damn angry, lol.

I've never seen anything remotely like a Nintendo securebit at the local Canadian Tire's, or other Hardware stores, and I looked. Perhaps a specific sized jewelers hex/socket might kinda work. If you really value what you are working on, I can't recommend the real securebits enough.

Unless you are buying a pile of stuff from MCM, you are gonna spend less buying from Sylentwulf. MCM's shipping to Canada is DOUBLE. I never order less than $200 worth at a time.

If you have a REAL electronics store in the area (ie; "not Radio Shack"), then you can typically buy the bits from them. Some computer hardware (of the past, at least) used those fasteners, and I had no trouble whatsoever getting a set (NES/SNES, Genesis (larger)). I bought mine from a store called Midwest Electronics Supply, a store that is smaller than a convenience store. Assuming you live in a town larger than 45,000 (such as mine), you'll likely have some success.

Other than that, go the internet route. If you're incredibly fucking cheap, you can use a solid hex head screwdriver (of the appropriate size) and a dab or two of "screw grab" (a friction increasing fluid). I did this for the first few carts I cracked open, then broke down and went hunting for proper tools.

I have an extra (maybe 2 if I can find it) 3.8MM gamebit. You can use it by hand (that's what I do) or use it as a bit for a screwdriver or drill.

It works like a charm on NES and SNES games, but isn't the right fit for GEN.

If anyone is interested, let me know (what the hell am I going to do with 2 or 3 of these things?)
