View Full Version : NES Classic Series (for the NES)

I was looking around Wikipedia the other day, when I noticed that the box art was instead a "Classic Series" for the NES itself, not the NES series for the GBA.

Does anyone know what the other "Classic Series" games were, and any box art?

I have a copy of Punch-Out!! that has the box, It also says "Classic Series" On it. I'm thinking it's like the "Greatest hits" Versions of PS2 games today, only the carts don't say "Classic series" on them.

No, they don't say "Classic Series" on them, but they are noticeably different. Metroid, for example, has a yellow instead of silver label. Punch-Out dropped Mike Tyson from the game (due to his rape conviction) and changed the final fighter from Tyson to Mr. Dream. Nintendo also released The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II in this series, most obvious is the gray cart instead of the original gold.

Those were (I believe) the only 4 in the series released around 92-93 near the end of the NES lifespan. Konami also released Blades of Steel in a "Konami Classic series" with a red label instead of the original silver. Don't know if the box was marked differently at all, or if there were others in the Konami series, though.

Somebody feel free to jump in and add to / correct my knowledge.

Edit: One more thing that I may not have made clear... the games themselves were exactly the same (In fact, Nintendo printed "The Original" on the boxes) except for the Tyson / Mr. Dream thing and even then, it was the same fighter with different skin. Just the labels are different.

The two versions of Punch-Out!! have a couple other differences. The "Mike is waiting for your challenge" screen is completely removed. The game goes right from the ringing bell to the title screen - where the music from the "Mike is waiting for your challenge" screen plays instead of silence like in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! Of course "Mike Tyson's" is removed from the title screen but an additional "1990 Nintendo" copyright date is added in addition to the original "1987 Nintendo" date.

Also while I'm sure it didn't help Nintendo any in wanting to renew, I'm fairly sure that the reason for the rerelease with Mr. Dream is because Tyson's contract with Nintendo had expired. Punch-Out!! was still making good money on the NES so Nintendo simply continued production without him.

Now the rape conviction DID cause the follow-up that Tyson was working on, "Mike Tyson's Intergalactic Heavyweight something or other" to be changed to Power Punch II and him to be stripped out of it as well. We all know that game sucks though.

In Europe you have these titles also as classics series:

- Donkey Kong Classics
- Ice Hockey
- Mario Bros
- Pinball
- Soccer
- Tennis
- Zelda 1
- Zelda 2 (i think)

Mario Bros is also alittle diffrent from the first release. In the classics release the controls are better and there are some extra screen before every level (or something like that).

4 only in existance from what I remember. Honestly, I love the new cover they gave Metroid (Makes it look like the actual game instead of a confusing horizontal screen shot) Zelda 1/2 label's artwork are smaller then the original ones I noticed and the fact they are grey carts I perfer, because it matches the others in a line-up of solid NES titles.

As for the PAL Classics...can someone provide a pic of the Mario Bros one? It's kind of funny that N didn't re-release a Mario game during the 1993 releases...

I own the Metroid one and trust me, the art may be [ten times] better but the password system sucks. I mean, you can't get the code "ENGAGE RIDLEY MOTHER F[*bleep*]CKER" to register in this version? Way to go Nintendo, go buy a @#$%ing clue.

Wow. I don't think I could manage that sort of hostility towards a game cartridge.

The mario bros re-release had a ton of differneces, like they used the arcade game sprites, the level structure was a little differnt, and it has the arcade intros, and if you play alll the way to level 100 it replays the opening demo.

Konami also released Blades of Steel in a "Konami Classic series" with a red label instead of the original silver. Don't know if the box was marked differently at all

The image on the front of the box is framed all around by a red border, just like the cart. The manual is the same though (except for maybe a -1 or something appended to the code and the obligatory projection TV warning that was added to all manuals still in print in the NES's waning years).

I'm not so sure if that's it..because ours looks exactly the same...unless they decided to just release it "as is" again?

Well there is a GBR code in the bottom right corner! :P So it cant be exactly the same (Trys to split hairs..)
Either way, maybe this needs looking into more, i cant say i have a clue on it really so ill leave it to the Pros!

Yeah, that's not the NSTC one, though. I don't think there was an update to the cover art. Not one that I've seen, at least.

Yeah, there was no NTSC re-release as far as I know. From what I understand, the people in this thread were referring to the PAL one that I posted the scan of ;)

Fair enough, ive got the GBR (Great Britain) Release, so im presuming there is a very small chance i would come accross the NOE one with a home country version being avaliable

Nice cover art on that, makes the other look boring!

Please tell me someone put some marker to that cartridge and they didn't print it with "CLASSIC SERIE" on it.

I don't think it's a typo -- look at the seal of quality. Could it be a German copy?

Damn that is nice...makes the 2600/7800 box art almost pale in comparison....(yet I do like the classic Donkey Kong look it had originally)

No clue about Australia/UK. I just happened to come across the Italian version once ;) It didn't have the Classic Serie logo on it, but did have the same label art and the rerelease product code with -1 on it.

Edit: here is a scan of the Italian version:

Cool thanks :) It have the GIG (or what it say) mark on it, like other games later games also have (Rodland, Pugsley etc). Are these games official released by Nintendo or by a 3rd party?

Most likely. You need a toploader or a modified toaster tho. I dont know if there are any gfx glitches.

I think GIG distributed NES (and SNES) games in Italy.

Is the Donkey Kong Classics release in this series also updated to be more true to the arcade originals the way Mario Bros is? The updated Mario Bros is excellent, definitely the best Mario Bros release for any console, and I'd love to have a version of Donkey Kong that's just as good.
