View Full Version : So, sealed Saturn games aren't too hard to come by, huh?

I just bought my first Saturn a little over a week ago and have spent the previous ten days or so loading up on all of the Saturn games I've always wanted but never bought for lack of a Saturn. Much to my surprise, without much effort at all I've been getting sealed Saturn games for about what they sell for open and complete. A few examples in my week of Saturn collecting was that I've gotten a sealed NiGHTS into Dreams for $30 in a store (with the 3D controller), a sealed Scud: The Disposable Assassin for $7 shipped on eBay, and a sealed Magic Knight Rayearth for $45 shipped on eBay. I'm not really trying to buy sealed games, but I am super anal about having discs in really good shape, so if I can get sealed, disc-based games cheap, I'm all for it. Still, I feel kind of guilty opening these games up to play (I had at one time a fairly extensive sealed SNES collection, and it would have been like blasphemy to open those up).

What's weird about this is that the games are going for sealed what they go for used and complete. Hell, I've seen all three of the above mentioned games go for more than I paid for them sealed opened and complete on several occasions. What's the logic behind this? Are people scared to even bid on sealed Saturn games, because they assume they'll go for crazy prices like sealed NES and SNES games?

I'm not sure there's much in the way of a question in all of this, but this whole scenario has struck me as weird and I thought I'd vent. Is it still venting if you aren't really complaining? Anyway...

there's really little or no premium on most sega titles sealed, in general. Not enough people collecting at this point, anyway.

I don't think it's lack of collectors, it's the games. Sega produced a ton of extra Nights stuff, so even as popular as Nights is, finding sealed games isn't tough. As for Scud, that is an unpopular game that sellers are sitting on tons of stock in warehouses. You probably got yours from a seller called vglq or something, I bought a sealed Scud from him too. And Magic Knight Rayearth, that was the last game released for the Saturn and was released in 2000. It was being sold brand new on the Working Designs website for 5 years or so since then. If you look at the top selling/most popular Saturn games that don't have thousands of copies sitting in a warehouse, they do go for quite a bit. A sealed Guardian Heroes is $100+, a sealed Panzer Saga is over $200. It would be more fair to compare sealed Saturn to sealed PS1 than sealed SNES.

Hmm, I'd love to come accross a sealed Magic Knight Rayearth, especially since Working Designs closed their doors earlier this year unfortunantly! :(

Not exactly the same but this morning in eBay auction #220013290551, a sealed Pitfall for 32X went for $74. I was going to bid $55 myself but I didn't get the chance.

I just mean that in general, whether it be master system/genesis/dreamcast/saturn/whatever, few sega games seem to go for much sealed. There's a few exceptions like dragoon, but in general they don't seem to go for a lot. I may be misinformed as I don't collect much sega, but from what I've seen the premium for sealed seems pretty small on sega.... and I'm not necessarily talking about stuff with huge warehouse stock. Saw a sealed toe jam & earl go for $2 more than a complete copy :hmm:

I think that's a good point.

Still, even the games that I haven't bought sealed are surprising when I check the completed auctions. A sealed Guardian Heroes, a game that does not fit your description of one that has a lot of old stock sitting around in wherehouses, just sold for about $125; I paid $75 for mine complete and not in particularly good shape. Hell, Panzer Dragoon Saga usually seems to go for about $300, which is only about double what it goes for open and complete. Look at how on other systems sealed games go for exponentially higher than sealed/completes; it just doesn't seem to be happening here. And the Saturn seems to have its share of rabid collectors, too.

I think any of the "expensive" Sega games (over $50 unsealed) will command high premiums. SMS games are rarely found sealed, I don't really even count that. It's not like Atari where they had millions of extra copies to bury and not like NES in that everyone and their uncle had one so there are hidden treasures everywhere. Genesis - you rarely see ANY Genesis premiums sealed, or even older games. Most of the Genesis premiums I've never seen available sealed in the last 2 years. Genesis is also a couple years older than SNES, which makes a difference, possibly negligible. Sega CD - sealed games are common. It died a quick death and left tons of stock everywhere. Even the most valuable games (Keio anyone?) will show up pretty frequently and the prices for premuim games will about double. 32X - same as Sega CD but becoming more and more popular with collectors for some reason. Maybe because it's the easiest major console I know of to complete a collection for and sealed games are everywhere. Saturn - again pretty much the same as the SCD and 32X. Died a quick death and left ample stock of most games lying around.

Also, Nintendo people are crazy. Some of you guys are willing to spend thousands on a single game. I love games and have more than 1000 Sega games, but c'mon. Personally if I had even an extra single thousand, I would be going to Grand Cayman. Is it because there are so many Nintendo collectors or is it a personality thing? The most I've ever seen any Sega game sell for is $350 for U.S. Sonic 1 for SMS.

I chalk it up to crazy Nintendo-heads with money to throw around. I guess the people who pay that much might be more of the "collector" type than the "gamer". There are people here who have thousands of games yet rarely play them. Maybe it's just more important to them or there are more Nintendo collectors demanding rare games. On the other hand, maybe if a system I collected for had a $1000 game I needed to complete the collection I would be willing to pay. I highly doubt it though.

Yeah, just a week or so ago I saw a sealed, seemingly mint Herzog Zwei go for $34 unshipped. That game sold for $40-50 cart only pretty routinely back in 1999-2000 or so. I couldn't believe it. It's a sweet game, too, and one that the manual would certainly come in handy for. (I got a boxed but no instructions copy in terrible shape (but it works great) for $2.39 a few years back, but that was luck.)

Also, I realized I spelled "warehouse" "wherehouse" a few posts ago. I shouldn't be allowed to post early in the morning.

Sega stuff is just cheap atm, more of the good dreamcast titles are cheaper than they've been, genesis stuff is very cheap. Saturn is also slipping, but seems to be holding better than most sega systems. the 32x is a strange creature along with the sms, the prices on these 2 are down, but a lot of the tough titles aren't coming up a lot. Me thinks sellers are waiting for the market to come back up.

Sega collecting is on the rise, and I am glad. More people collecting means more people trading.

hmm..
I've gotten most of Saturn/DC stuff I wanted after decade of collecting

the selaed or unsealed only makes big difference with high demand titles like RS or PDS... And I know few people who only collect sealed titles - beats me why on earth would you collect the sealed copies since I alway open mine after bought to play. Only titles still sealed in my collection are the duplicates

I think people resealed alot of saturn games and pass them off as new. I think with the long box games it was easier to get away with all they had was a hanging tab.

The psx had that security seal along with the shrinkwrap. The funny thing though the saturn disc seemed more scracth resisitance.

I also think most of the saturn's killer apps came from overseas. The fighters were and still the best on consoles. The most rpgs have been played by the fans which leaves alot of common sports /platform. One of the best baseball games of it's time world series wouldn't fecth much sealed because of its commonality.

Well, it is summer. Prices will rise again in September/October. As a relatively constant eBay seller, I have a huge stash waiting to be unloaded when the market gets back this fall/winter/spring. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
