Hey guys whats up, im in the middle of getting my own place and while i was moving i had a great idea to build a huge shelf that would hold a complete US collection. So anyways my old man helped me on this and i think we built something perfect. Anyones thoughts??? they are dust free right now and look very nice. i still need 105 games for a complete collection and i have two empty shelfs on the bottom ready for them lol. So this will hold a complete collection and looks great. Total cost was about $85.00 and we got everything from lowes. Ill keep ya guys posted when i get the full room done. its gonna be a sweet collection room. heres some pics of the shelf at the moment. :-) Game on!

how stable is that? seems to me that with the weight of the games, it may end up a little top heavy.

thanks. actually this thing is extremely stable. We made the base at the bottom extra large, so it wouldnt flip over. Also its gonna be bolted to the wall so its gonna be impossible to flip. I thought i was gonna have to bolt it down before i put games on it but it actually holds perfect with no bolts. but im going to anyways. probably put a hole through my floor if it fell over lol.

It looks uber solid :D I don't see sag anywhere of noticeable significance and he probably has it anchored soon.

It might just be the angle of the pictures, but I second the opinion that it looks top heavy. But hey, if it looks stable to you, awesome. Congrats on your collection-you're well on your way! :)

That's pretty impressive. Good bit of craftsmanship there. Excellent.
Cool collection of carts too. I'd do something more interesting with that top shelf though eventually, when you have the space. Maybe create a whole section of SMB in Lego, or something? Or use it to display a Gold NWC, and those other crazy expensive carts like that Myriad one ;)

As someone who can't crumble paper correctly, that shelf rocks with glocks. Eventually I'll be able to have one large monstrosity hold the psx library.

cosmicmonkey - yea dude i actually have all my complete games in a glass display case that is still at my parents house. but what i plan on doing is making sliding glass doors to put at the top of the shelf and then putting all my expensive complete games like flintstones 2, caltron, bubble bobble 2, fire n ice, action 52, marios time machine etc. all acorss the top of it. And i made it tall enouh tat the top so i could sit NES boxes up there and fac outwards, i think that will be awesome. but what is up there now is a temporary solution and looks boring i think lol. But i didnt wana put all my expensive games up there without glass over them. they could fall off and then be stepped on lol
That looks great, very neat and organized way to keep your NES games. 8-)

Nice 8-)
BTW - If you're worried about the thing tipping just put a anchoring screw in the wall and attach it to one of the shelves. How many games is that anyway?

I am curious as to what kind of wood you used? I've used pine on my last two sets of shelves and they would both bend under that kind of weight.
Parpunk
08-08-2006, 06:21 PM
hey guys. actually we used pine. but then we varnished it as well. plus we used big screws on the sides of the shelf to hold it in place. we made it more tall than wide, because i didnt want it to sag.
as for time it took about 6 hours at the most. but we worked on it off and on. for about 2 weeks. i was in the middle of moving while we did it.
And yea thats what im doing is putting screws in it to hold it to the wall lol. Thats why i wasnt worried at all about it being top heavy because it cant be if its bolted to the wall.
I think i might probably put big glass doors on it in time and make it toally dust free :-)
oh by the way that is about 600++ games. all my rares are in a glass display case. i haveent brought them down yet.
thanks for the compliments :-)

Whats wrong with you! :P I just went over 400 and now have 403.... but I need mostly all the expensive ones now... :( Well good luck on your collection! Post your list of games! :)

hey thanks guys. about the number of games. i actually am doing it backwards now lol. i know exactly how many i NEED now. i quit counting upwards when i got to like 550 games lol. but i just said 600+ there because thats NOT my entire collection. i have about 200 CIB games as well. and lots of games in cases that areent pictured like the Dargon warrior set etc. :-)

Nice I can tell that its very stable by looking at the bottom foundation. Oh ya lf your gonna put a sliding glass door try not to put it near the screws cause then the whole shelf will crack(Learned that the hard way)
Nice Collection man keep up the good work! :D

It is a nice shelf but I fall under that as well. Shouldn't the back and side panels be a bit thicker to handle the weight? If it is really stable then there really can't be too many complaints other than why there's not a post on how to make one and make it look that good. ;)

Very nice! I certainly don't have enough games to fill up a shelf like that but when I do I'll know what it needs to look like.

HERE (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=39614) you go...complain no more, go forth and multiply your storage space.

actually the reason i didnt make the sides thicker is because it didnt need to be. And honestly i think it would have made it flimzier and would have possibly caused the shelves to sag. And tat might be a problem a lot of people are facing. think about it, if the side wood was thicker that would have made me get even longer screws. now if your using like 6 inche screws to go through two pieces of wood that is defintly making the wood weaker and you might not have a lot of the screw in the piece of wood that is the shelf. most of the screw would be taken up in the sides and that coulde cause some weakness in the shelfs. Now with the wood i used there is a lot of the screw in the shelf and just about the same amount in the sides. But anyways as for the back wood there is none. the whiteness is my wall. the shelf bolts directly to my wall and the wall is the back of it :-)
and i defintly cant complain going on about 3 weeks and still NO sag in the shelfs :-)

Ok i decided i think im gonna line the whole top shelf with the rarer games in the hard plastic cases. (that way i can keep a whole set together on the same shelf)
But the only way it would look good and colorful is if i could somehow get the artwork from the sides of NES boxes for the game cases on the spines....... hmm sounds like a project.
anyone wanna scan me spines on the following games lol.
contra force
power blade 2
bubble bobble 2
little samson
flintstones surprise at dino peak
action 52
bonks adventure
all the mega mans
bombermans
all 4 dragon warriors
lemming
panic restraunt
mermaids of atlantis
mario is missing
marios time machine
sqoon
bubble bobble
cabal
metroid
i would maybe paypal some cash to do this lol. just lemme know. they would need to be scanned to be able to print out and look about 1 inch tall and 4 inches long. (or whatever would fit decently for the spine on NES hard plastic cases :-) and look decent. anyone up to it? i might make a forum on it in the next few days
thanks!
