Oh, thats too funny.
I remember coming home from school and there was an Intellivision sitting on the table with 10 or 12 games. Some guy had come to the door with it and sold it to my mom for 20 bucks or something, claiming that he had no choice because his car was out of gas. (Yes, I realize it was probably stolen) I think I was 8 or 9, and my parents were dead set against video games for some reason, all my friends had 2600 and my new machine blew theirs away. I probably looked like that kid! :D

I don't think I'd ever played a video game before or had any idea what they were like when we got our 2600 in 1982 or 83. My parents had played arcade games a lot back in the mid '70s and so they were probably more excited than I was. We didn't get a TV to play it on for another couple months anyway, though.

Let's see. I received my first console, an Atari 5200, on Christmas of '80 or '81.
Funny thing is, it was not requested by me and was a complete surprise from my mom. I honestly didn't know what to make of it. LOL I think my mom figured I'd like one since I was at the neighbor's house playing on his 2600 all the time. I might have expressed interest in it.
So there you have it. Surprised but more astonished than anything else. :D

I was estatic to get an Atari 2600, which was the first one for me. I had been playing it over at my friends' house for years so it was great to finally have one I could call my own at the time. And it still works to this day.
After that I was just as excited to get my second system - the Jaguar. I bought that one myself but I still was quite excited to get one. Probably nothing like that video though :P

I get excited all the time whenever I buy a new game system. As for the first consule though, it took a ton of begging and eventually I got my Gamegear and that was such a treat. I only had Sonic 2 for awhile but eventually had several after discovering used games at GameStop, but that's long since passed from the mid-late 90's. I still love my Gamegear to this day and respect it. All other systems I've gotten are through my own money and purchased at different times so I get a real warm, good feeling when I get them but not a suprised feeling since I decided to get it.

I was not very excited I asked for a NES (8-bit) because everyone and thier brother had but instead I got a sega master system. My mom bought it because it said "the best video game system on the box. But I learned to love it.

For some reason my parents pushed videogames on my brother and I at birth. At about the ages of 3(me) and 6(big bro) they got us a Telstar. But, my true joy was in '82 when we got Colecovision. We loved it so much, after about 6 months, we owned 3 of them. 3rd one was dads! @_@

I was so young that I don't remember getting my NES. I remember my second console, the Genesis. Now that was a great Christmas.

I was about 2 years old around 1984 when my parents bought an atari 2600 for my mother, I was really young and don't remember it very well but i do remember being wicked excited to get ahold of pac-man. My fondest memory was a couple years later when I had been begging for an NES with SMB. I was about four years old. My mother gave me a gift for my birthday and told me it was from my aunt. It was a huge box and I was so excited to see what was in it for me. I ripped it open as fast as I could and it was a box full of hand-me-down clothes. I was so young I started to cry because I hated clothes as presents (I was 4 after all). In the middle of me being all sad my mother said to me "hey be quiet, you still have one more present to open." Then finally there it was, an NES with SMB and Ghosts n' Goblins. I had completely forgotten about the clothes all together and went directly in to try it out. I thought that was pretty funny for a 4 year old's B-day. What I brat i was

I mildly freaked when I got my Intellivision. I spent HOURS playing Demon Attack, Astrosmash. I think I also got Maze-a-Tron (another time eater) and Frog Bog. Don't really remember the year, just that the system had been out awhile but you could still find games in the stores easily. Within the next month or so, I already had Las Vegas Poker and Blackjack, Horse Racing, Burgertime, and Skiing...mainly because my parents played them almost as much as me. More games followed later and I soon had a good collection going.
A few years later, I got my NES and it was all downhill from there. *_*

Greetings Programs.
You ask about being excited to receive a console. Some of us are old enough to have bought our first consoles :)
One month after I got my first real job in july 1983 I bought a Coleco. Before that I was borrowing my Sisters 2600 whenever she let me.
Way before that I was one of those really spoiled kids that got a roomfull of stuff at Christmas so I never got excited about anything.

Thats classic dude, completely oblivious, just interested in getting that wrapper open. Your so lucky to have video of that, wish I did.
I don't really recall getting my coleco or nes but I do remember getting my SNES. I was at my fathers friend pawn shop. I was about to get a sega genesis, had the box and system in hand. Went to test it prior to buying it and it was a complete dud. He didn't have any left but he did have a brand new in the box SNES (probably stolen and sold to him) So my dad bought me that. What of sign of fate that day was. SNES is my favorite system and so much better IN MY OPINION then the genesis. I own a genesis now, it deserves respect but I'm a nintendo fan boy. Got Wrestlemania and the boxed in Super Mario Wolrd that day. My big brother and I played it till like 2am. Great times great memories.

The Atari 2600 and Odyssey 2 had already infiltrated my home by the time I was old enough to comprehend video games in the early 1980's. I had other siblings, which is why those game machines were there.
I don't remember being greatly excited about the NES. The first console that truly stuck out would have been the Sega Master System. My dad brought that home one night and I had never even heard of the system so you can bet I was excited. I knew nothing about Sega. It was awfully close to the release, from what I recollect, so it was state of the art at the time :D Too bad I don't have the system anymore. It was played often enough that it eventually crapped out :(

i barely rember it but it was X-mas od 89 and i was 4....i started early but i turned 5 in febuary. so as you can imagine i was stoked but not like N64 kids...there was an e-bay auction for that system, i think it went for quite a bit.
my parents deny getting me something of that such at an early age but i played the shit out of it, still use the same NES console today and its not all beat up and has stickers all over it like most kid's systems from back then either.
they probally realized what a mistake it was but today, still buying games they say its good for me, gives me something to do because i hunt more than i play any more....

My family got a 2600 for Christmas in 1977 too! At the time, I really didn't know much about it, but I knew that me and my brother and my dad were all excited about it. We played the hell out of combat that night. I think we also had Air-Sea Battle, and maybe Outlaw.

I remember flipping out when I got my first Sega Genesis for Christmas...I must've been the last kid at my school to get one. I'll never forget when I got my N64 a few years later for Christmas because I didn't have a TV that supported s-video so I had to wait a few days before playing it. Worst few days of my life.

my parents bought my sister and i a used nintendo system from the newspaper in august of 1988. It came with super mario brothers and duck hunt. we played the shit out of that game. Being all of four years old at the time i wasn't the best with hand-eye cord. In fact, the second night i was playing super mario brothers i was sitting on the table with my sister playing. As usual i was luigi. I was playing through 1-3 (the first platform mushroom stage) and actually started jumping and moving my arms and hands side to side along with the character. i ultimately jumped off the table and dislocated my shoulder. it wasn't a pretty site.
anyways. After smb/dh, my sister and i borrowed mike tysons punch out and hogan's alley. I still remember shooting barrels and gangsters in our small little house as if it were yesterday :)
good thread.

Well, I can't say how excited I was over getting my first console because even before I was born there was an NES in the house that my parents bought when they married (I'm only 16.) The first console I really remember getting, however, was a Genesis from my cousin when I was 3 or 4 that came with Sonic 1 and the second Toejam + Earl game. That Genesis got me hooked forever on gaming. I don't remember how excited I was when I got it, but I'm sure that I loved it after my dad hooked it up to the TV downstairs and I turned the Genesis on for the first time. Sadly, I don't remember which game I played first.

My parents had an atari which I played plenty, but I don't remember receiving it. It was before I was 3. The year the NES came out, I got it for christmas with the robot, Gyromite and Kung Fu. It was wonderful!
First console I bought myself was an SNES, which unfortunately I no longer own. Someone I knew broke it. I've really learned to appreciate getting my own consoles since and I own pretty much every sega console or have some way of playing sega games =).

I remember getting the ColecoVision back in '83 or '84. I was probably a kindergartener, and it was really more my dad's idea than anything else. I was soon spending hours playing Zaxxonn, though.
The NES was my first big thrill as a kid. I remember the feeling of ripping the wrapper off to partially reveal the big picture on the system. Nothing like it.

Indeed you're very lucky to have that on tape. I have a photo of my brother and I playing our Nintendo that we just unwrapped. I remember playing SMB and being really happy to get to level 1-3. We sat on the floor playing the game for at least 6 hours (I remember it being around 2pm when our father told us "enough") I also remember how PAINFULL it was getting up after kneeling on the floor for that long X_x

The first console I got was the Sega Genesis and I exploded but only briefly. My parents didnt take to screaming much so it ended up in some flapping around and jumping and then just getting down to business and hooking it up to play.
