Okage is a very quirky RPG. It's newer (on the PS2), however it still can be had for undert $10usd and is tons of fun.

RoboPon is pretty unknown. (it came in the cool looking black cartridge for the gameboy)

i thought sigma star saga on the GBA was a pretty fresh and new idea, but you gotta also like shmups too

By all accounts (including mine) the Mario & Luigi games are pretty weird and out there, if you haven't tried them already.

Repetitive shmupping at that...it looks great, at the least. I just don't think the shmup part is very good, but hey. shmupping + some Zelda-like overworld action = ??? LOL

Princess Tomato for NES is good choice if you're looking for quirky. You play as an anthropormophic cucumber knight, wage war on the evil Farmies in a game of "rock, paper, scissors" and there's plenty of groan inducing veggie puns. Also happens to just be a really good game.

If you enjoy graphics and music that are SNES-quality on a PS1, then check out the $10 classic Eternal Eyes. A very linear (and easy) quest but good fun if you like simple rpg's.

Maybe a bit too popular, but Crystalis was like the nes version of link to the past on snes.

I loved the sword of vermillion for the genesis. I am not sure how the sales did. I don't here that one being brought up in too much in discussions.

not the cheapest, but definately quirky, Rhapsody on the PSX is a great game. A musical RPG? Why not?

Thousand Arms for PSX, also if you like strategy RPGs try Saiyuki: Journey West also for PSX.

Kaine23 is exactly right...EVO : The Search for Eden is out of control! to this very day i've never played anything like it. I'd give an arm and a leg for it to be ported to the GBA but that'll never, EVER happen :bawling:

Final Lap Twin is pretty weird in that all the "battles" are races. It has random encounters... of racing.

Very good game, and it is cheap now ! (under 20$CDN). Original games are so rare, and it is one of them.

Everybody should play this game at least once. It's a shame that it's so hard to find. *hugs my complete copy*

How about Robotrek (SNES)? Not only it is a great game, but there are some truly unique things about it, like the battle system that no RPG has tried to imitate before or since.

There was a CAR RPG I always wanted to try out. It's supposed to be very fun.

It's for PS One (I think)

Road Trip for PS2 (aka ChoroQ HG 2)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v251/maxlords/b30e81f5.jpg
Travel from town to town to compete in races, the main goal to challenge the president. The world is huge and open ended (streamed) with hundred's of sub tasks and minigames to complete including finding cars (there are no humans) to inhabit a town that gets built during the course of the game. One of my favorites.

ChoroQ is kind of a CarPG. The US version is PS2, but it's been out on import for many consoles. Kind of poor reviews in the US, but I think it's pretty fun. Plus, those Takara cars are pretty cool :)

EDIT: Just read the post above mine about ChoroQ. I'm referring to the Atlus-released version (different game, methinks, but I am not familiar with the one above)

I think there is an RPG for gameboy advance that was kinda like Sigma Star except you race cars [searching for the name of the game] I can't find it but i know it exists because I read the back of the box a few years ago when i saw it for sale at Sam's club or something. If anybody knows which game i'm talkin' about please give me a title.

Oh, and it's certainly not an RPG, but it's RPGish in many ways -- Guardian Heroes. It's like playing a 2D brawler (but with great 2D fighter moves) with RPG levelling and customization. One of the main reasons to own a Saturn.

I think the most recent entry in the Tales series took this play mechanic and ran with it, didn't it? I thought all the random battles are 2D fights, or at least like a 2D, real time fight. Haven't played it, and not sure if it's in the US or if it's still in Japan.

You might be thinking of Car Battler Joe. Very good mix of racing, RPG, adventure, Mario Kart battle mode, and... Pokemon like collecting of car parts.

So, Sigma Star Saga was one of my biggest let downs ever. I was mad excited on the fact that it would be a mix of Zelda and shmup, but WayForward (I think that's the name) apparently hasn't played a shmup since the Atari 2600 days. How many bullets are shot at you in that game? Two? Three? I don't know exatly, but it's pretty damn close to those numbers. The shmup part SUCKS in Sigma Star Saga, and since you'll be going into battle every 20 seconds, it gets old really fast.

Forget Sigma Star Saga. It's not worth it.

EDIT: Just read the post above mine about ChoroQ. I'm referring to the Atlus-released version (different game, methinks, but I am not familiar with the one above)
Yes it's a later game in the series. The Atlus Released game is ChoroQ HG 4. It's good but I like HG2 (Road Trip) more because the adventure aspect is much bigger in that compared to HG4. HG4 has three towns while HG2 has a gigantic world, why the adventure parts became smaller in the later games I don't know. Keeping track of the ChoroQ games can be a bit confusing so here is a little list:

PS2
Japanese name: Choro Q High Grade
US name: Gadget Racers
European name: Penny Racers

Japanese name: Choro Q High Grade 2
US name: Road Trip
European name: Road Trip Adventure

Japanese name: Choro Q High Grade 3
US name: US release was cancelled, was going to be called Road Trip: Adventure Avenue
European name: Gadget Racers

Japanese name: Choro Q High Grade 4
US name: Choro Q
European name: Choro Q

Of these HG 2, 3 and 4 are the Carpg style games.

Japanese name: Shin Combat Choro Q
US name: Seek and Destroy
European name: Seek and Destroy

GBA
Japanese name: Choro Q Advacne
US name: Gadget Racers
European name: Penny Racers

Japanese name: ChoroQ Advacne 2
US name: Gadget Racers 2
European name: Gadget Racers

GC
Japanese name: Choro Q!
US name: Road Trip: Arcade Edition
European name: Gadget Racers

So Gadget Racers on Gamecube in Europe is not the same game as Gadget Racers on PS2 in the US which is not the same game as Gadget Racers on GBA in the US which is not the same game as Gadget Racers on GBA in Europe which is not the same as Gadget Racers on PS2 in Europe. They are all good games though. There are also tons of more ChoroQ games in Japan like ChoroQ Works, Choro Q Marine: Q-Boat, Choro Q Park, etc, etc.

Anyway, another RPG that should be mentioned is...

Great Greed (http://www.rpgclassics.com/shrines/gb/greatgreed) for the Gameboy

Fun rpg wich has a food theme for it's names, where you things like explore an old record factory or change the laws in a town with a gigant slot machine.

How about Survival Kids for the GB? Overhead view, as you try to survive on an abandoned island, lots of puzzles. Lost in Blue is the spiritual sequel to this game by the way.

Yes it appears to be Choro Q Advance 2. It's an old list but I think I've seen it as Gadget Racers 2 as well.

Here is a bigger list. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choro_Q_video_games)

ah, i was gonna mention this one. one of my favorites. i found the end especially odd. see at the end your givin the oppertunity to marry into the kings royal family. you can choose to marry any one of his daughters includeing one that seems to be about 8 years old. your then treated to some amuseing text depended on who you married and i beleive a scean of the lovely newlyweds relaxeing on a hillside. on yhea you can also choose to marry the already married queen or even the king...quirky rpg if i ever heard of one, at least for one in the US.

Road Trip was awesome, but I sort of prefer ChoroQ to it. It's a shame we never got HG3 :(

Road Trip's visuals are a bit simpler and cleaner than ChoroQs and it has the advantage when it comes to starting grid size (it's like 4 times more cars than HG4 supports), but the driving model and the tracks in HG4 were so much better imo.

The "overworld" in Road Trip was AWESOME, though. Holy sweet jesus was that cool.

My one real beef with ChoroQ (HG4) is that almost none of the body designs actually changed your performance at all (I think the motorcycle shell was the only one that did anything) and that the three cities just aren't as fun to explore as Road Trips' world. ChoroQ's racing was better though, and imo that's where the real meat of the game is :)

Here's what my stats were when I first beat the game:

This thread is sweet. I picked up EVO today based on the recommedation here and am in the process of trying to track down a copy of Great Greed for Gameboy (there're a couple on eBay right now, but I'm trying to get one cheap). Hooray for weird RPGs.
