Was doing some research on Metal Slug and came across an article regarding slowdown. Was there slowdown in these games? I ask because of emulation purposes. Earlier versions of Mame apparently played these games with not much slowdown, as the program got better it began to emulate the system better including its capabilities so now recent versions of the program run games like Metal Slug like the AES and MVS which apparently have slow down. Any one know how true this is???

Yeah, MS2 on actual Neo hardware has slowdown. Quite shocking slowdown in fact. That's one of the reasons behind MSX: it's a remix of MS2 with the slowdown problems fixed.
Even Last Resort suffers from slowdown. It is possible to get rid of this via emulation, but then it's not true to the original hardware then, is it.

Thanks for the info man. Please if anyone else has more to say or more insight please reply.

To be honest with you I skipped MS2 and went to MSX for that reason (nasty reviews). I have never played MS2 on the NEO but I have it for the PS1. I’m going to get MS2 sometime soon for the NEO so I can complete my MS1-3 + X combo (I have no plans to buy 4 or 5).

Metal Slug 2 is quite a bit more enjoyable without all of that damned slowdown, but I still prefer Metal Slug X (it's just better tweaked and refined overall). If you're using MAME, enable cheats and then hit the "~" key and boost the 68000 CPU speed to ~150% or some such.
If the slowdown in a game is intentional (explosions in Ikaruga, some of the heavier segments in Guwange, etc) then I don't very much mind it, but when it comes to games that shouldn't have the slowdown (such as Symphony of the Night on PS1) then I very much prefer the emulation route over playing on original hardware.
Subtangent -> Crash Bandicoot running with Pete's OpenGL2 Plugin and a Toon shader in 1280x960 looks fucking AMAZING. Nevermind the fact that game is a shallow waste of time, it looks AMAZING. I need to try Spyro next.

For the most part, MAME rarely emulates slowdown... at least from the games I have played. Some Cave games that benefit from slowdown (DDP, ESPRade, etc.) don't slowdown in MAME, making them harder in emulation.
In all honesty, emulation slowdown is an extremely difficult task, and very rarely done.
