You won't believe this but on August 8, 2006 I not only found the last game (Ghost House) I needed for my SMS set but in the mail later that same day I got Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade UBI for the NES; The Last NES game I needed to complete my entire licensed NES collection!! Anyway first things first, back to the SMS. Special thanks to Kyle and Ken at KnK Shop here in Orillia, Dpcal (Calvin) and everyone else I missed who helped me on my mission to find them all. Here is some pics of my now complete US Sega Master System collection if you don't believe me:

Woah. Buster Douglass is rare? *checks guide* Good lord.

I paid a nickel for that. Yes. Yeeees.

This collection is impressive. Complete collections.. what eye candy. Good job.

Dude, awesome set!

Don't take this the wrong way (not being critical), but I think your Aerial Assault is UK. The US version has the modified logo and spine text ala US ESwat, Super Monaco GP, Columns etc.. Very tricky to find. But hey, plays the same if you have the US or UK cart, so what's the difference. Congrats on the collection!

Shit! I wasn't sure but I knew some of them had to be UK. It looks like I still have some more hunting to do. Thanks for letting me know and I'm still happy with the European copy anyway.

I bet that cost a pretty penny and lots of hard work to complete that gorgeous collection.

Congratulations on your accomplishment!

What else do you plan collecting and completing after this?

I agree, it was a great and underrated system. Phantasy Star is still one of the greatest video games of all time in my opinion and Alex Kidd in Miralce World, Wonder Boy III, and Ys are not too bad either.

Strider and Spiderman did but sadly no luck for Sonic and GAW. So it's just the US UPC sticker I need, eh?

Thank you! Dam, real nice collection there and you have a lot of exclusive Euro games too, eh? Just looking at em makes me really want to play em. The hardest games for me to get was easily Buster Douglas Boxing; it cost me 35 bucks Canadian just for the cart.

Hmm, I guess there are around 90 US games altoghter. I think if I combine the cost of all the SM games I got over the years I would say somewhere between 120 to 160 bucks. I was able to get a good deal on a lot of them at a flea market and only the later games were the more pricy.

Oh, the next system I wanna get a collect a complete set for is the Super Grafx. LOL

Nice work, I'm working on the same set but I'm trying to get all US releases (yea I know Pal works the same) which is a real pain in the ass. I'm patient, but I really have to decide if the UPC sticker is worth all the BS.

Try www.sega8bit.com and www.smspower.org. I also highly recommend you to get your Digitalpress guide, it will come in handy, it is really helpfull with all the descriptions because it's very easy to get confused with SMS because you can play PAL( PAL SMS collection is like 2.5 bigger than US's) with an US console and viseversa, that way, with the guide you can differentiate wich version you have and what you need.

Thanks for the websites and I already have the original Digital Press Collector's Guide here at home and I used that to figure out the US releases. I just didn't look closely enough at the different UPC codes though.

I've been stuck on Buster Douglas for awhile myself. The last couple I've seen on ebay went for $100+. I think I have a 130 or so SMS games, and until this thread did not know how to determine US vs. PAL vs. Wherever. Think I would rather pursue more distinct titles in the PAL set then worry about cover variations (for now). Many more PAL releases than US...

Yeah, although it's only a R7 like Power Strike and Castle of Illusion, it seems to demand a higher price tag then the rest. I guess that's because Sega only had the Buster Douglas license when he was champion (which we all know wasn't very long, eh?). There has to be over 300 different Master System games in Europe alone.

Good job, I completed mine about a year ago. I don't have Sonic, but personally I don't consider that one a hard US release. The toughest ones for me to find were actually:

Aerial Assault (DAMN EURO VERSIONS)
Galaxy Force (UGH...silver US version was TOUGH to get)
RC Grand Prix (VERY hard for US)
Super Monaco GP

Oh:

And just to verify what the other guy said about aerial assault, it's defenitely euro. Not to criticize or anything, but just so you know what it looks like, it has a plane being shot down or something like that, and on the spine it has a streak of fire going across the whole thing, kind of like ESwat does.

The DP guide on SMS has some old info IMO. It doesn't reflect the last few years of rabid SMS collecting that has depleted the number of the rarest games available. Complete U.S. Sonic has pulled over $200 every time I've seen it. I've never seen Buster Douglas go for cheaper than $75 complete. Besides those two games I think the DP guide is very accurate concerning SMS.

Well, along with the rest of the Classic systemns, the SMS section is undergoing revision at the moment.
I'm reluctant to peg Sonic at those kind of levels, since about $198 of that $200 is for the UPC sticker, which seems frankly ridiculous. It will be given something of a bump up though.
I've seen Buster Douglas go in the $40-$70 range a fair few times, but that usually because of poorly listed auctions, or because they're located in Europe rather than the US (copies of several of the later US releases were imported to Europe after the US market had died).

No, I definitely wouldn't value it at $200 either, but the last time I checked the guide said it was $35. That's not even close unless you get lucky. I'd say more like $100 - $150, my guess ranges because all I really have is anecdotal evidence, not research. I think Buster Douglas is a solid $75 game. It shows up more often so it's easier to track. That's for a mint "correctly listed from a U.S. seller" copy though.

Congratulations on obtaining the North American games.

I have a question since no one brought it up. I bought Sonic new back in 1992 and it has the sticker UPC lable but includes a multi language manual. Is this the only manual or is there a US style english manual for this game? I always thought it was weird- the back of the box also is in different languages.

If you insist on having the US version, and you include Buster Douglas and Sonic, and are unable to get the games locally (like me), then using ebay I think you could expect to pay well over $200, though compared to other systems it would not be very expensive. I've heard the Sms referred to as the reccommended starter set for collectors because it is inexpensive. It also depends if you want everything complete, and/or mint. I'd assume $3 to $8 for most titles before shipping...

Woah. Buster Douglass is rare? *checks guide* Good lord.

I paid a nickel for that. Yes. Yeeees.

This collection is impressive. Complete collections.. what eye candy. Good job.

Good find, yeah the game sucks but it is rare.

Perhaps that's why it is rare?

Sweet man, just super-sweet. I've always loved the SMS- the first ever console I owned as opposed to my brother- and seeing this amount of love for it warms my heart. You officially rock, my friend. :D

I agree, it was a great and underrated system. Phantasy Star is still one of the greatest video games of all time in my opinion and Alex Kidd in Miralce World, Wonder Boy III, and Ys are not too bad either.

Going by the price, Buster Douglas must be worth even more. ;-)

There are 114 US releases not including variants such as blue labels and re-releases, but if I'm wrong someone please correct me. As for your Galaxy Force, it's not the US release silver box, just in case you want to replace it. Congrats again!

Did Galaxy Force come in a special coloured cases like Bomberaid and Rampage then? Is there any website that has a side by side comparsion of the NA and Euro cases?

Didn't Galaxy Force come with a big Activision logo on it, as opposed to the European version (at least the one I've had) which looked like a normal Sega game?

Yup, I just learned about that. The US version is in a silver case with the Activision label instead of just Sega.
