A good selection of games. It makes me wonder, will this eventually kill the classic games market as re-releases to newer systems become more common?

Comp games are usually never done right, and it will not kill the retro market. If anything, it will fuel it. Comp games never have ALL the games on them...just the most popular ones. Emulators have been around for days, and that is not killing the retro market, nor will this.
I've wondered the same thing. The popularity of comps and legal emulation may cause the entire scene to consolidate.

That is pretty nice. Sword of Vermilion rocks, as do the Phantasy Stars.
Golden Axe III finally coming over here was the crown jewel in there though.

Wow, that's pretty intresting about Ristar. I've always loved that game, but I didn't know they had plans to make a franchise out of it. That would've been awesome if we got atleast a couple few more of those. Oh well, I'm sure they would've just done the same thing with sonic, releasing 'Ristar Riders' and all those other lame games very losely based on the characters in the game.

Nice collection! I'll definitely be picking this up when it comes out. The coverage of well-known (and not so well-known) games is pretty good, but I see a major omission -- where's the Streets of Rage series???

Emulation has been around for over 10 years and hasn't killed the classic gaming market. If anything, it has strenghtened it. Compilations fit into that mold with most people. Genesis games are a bit of an exception in the US as they are so plentiful and have been pimped out so many times. The Genesis market has been relatively dead for some years now, outside of the rarer releases and imports.
For example, I softmodded a friend's XBox and gave him a motherlode of ROMs and emulators for it. As anyone who has played the NES & Genesis emus on XBox knows, the emulation is very, very good. Both my fiancee and his were unhappy with having to use an XBox controller to play something like SMB. They wanted to use the brick.
This is the issue. Needing to own classic games on the native hardware is for the hardcore, yes, but it is also for the casual gamer who experienced them in their heyday. I agree. Nothing plays Sonic better than a Genesis controller. The same goes for the Mario games on the NES.
On the other side of the coin, I will of course pick up the comp, and it will be very cool for the PSP. Emulation is available on PSP, yes, but most don't have the patience or knowhow to use it.
EDIT: Reading the article further, the inclusion of Phantasy Stars II-IV is fantastic. Missing SOR sucks though, and who needs Bonanza Bros. again!?! Gain Ground is indeed a nice hardcore bonus. Shame on the writer for not taking the time to at least try Ecco Jr. via emulation before writing the artice. More companies need to make comps this good. If the emulation is right, this could be killer (though no one has ever really emulated the Genesis sound chip correctly and that makes a big difference for me).

Is there a release date yet? nothing on ign......
It's weird that the Sonic games are on it, since they were are already released in a collection on all 3 consoles. \

Theres only two on there, a Sega Genesis Collection without Sonic titles is incomplete, and would deter quite a few customers I bet that pick it up remembering their childhoods and then check the gamelist.

Ok, swlovinist and klausien, you both bring up good points. I didn't even think about emulation and trying to play any Sonic game on my Xbox just made me want to break out the CDX for its simple controller. But I hope that Sega continues to release Genny games for newer systems...it'd be great to see Rocket Knight Adventures or Toe Jam & Earl. And I hope this collection makes it to Xbox eventually as well.

Yeah, I'll probably buy it just for the Phantasy Star games. But c'mon Sega we NEED SoR and Shining Force!
Sega still has over 30 titles that came out on the Genesis.
So I bet we will see a Genesis Collection 2 release in 2007.

Nice collection, definitely worth picking up. No Streets of Rage though?
I also agree that collections like this actually help the classic games market. Especially when the emulation is shaky (which happens far too frequently, sadly)

They gotta hold something back for volume 2, in case volume 1 sells well.

Hmm...I'm sold on this. I mean, I've got most of these games as part of my Genesis collection...but having a bunch on one disc will sure be handy. Good stuff! :rocker:

I get the feeling SEGA is legally required to include "Flicky" on any complilation they crank out.

Oh wow, I actually own all those sans Golden Axe III of course, hehe. It defenitely looks like a great comp, I'm sure I'll get it anyways. Damn...this makes me wanna go find those last 90 genesis games or whatever that I need to finish ;D.

Yes, I too am sold.
Complain as you/I may about missing out on releases of the obscure and unique, face it; US gamers get some great deals on compilations!
And sorry to all my PALs across the pond, I hope you get this release as well.

This is amazing. I just hope they get the sound emulation right. (Sega Smash Pack on the DC was a horrid disaster)
The fact that this has Phantasy Star II, III, and best of all IV, makes this compilation well worth it. Phantasy Star Collection on GBA was missing PSIV due to storage limitations.
I also think, that because they included only Sonic 1 and 2, and no streets of rage, that they will be prepping a second classics release after this one.
Finally, I think releases like this are making it very hard to justify the value of the Wii's download service. Who needs a Wii, when you have a PS2? Why 'download' Sonic the Hedgehog for 3 dollars when you can buy a disc storing 30 games for 20 dollars?
Are you all aware that if Taito Legends 2 comes out in North America, and after CCC2 and Genesis Collection comes out, in total the Playstation 2 will have 18 compilations with over 460 classic games. That is pretty incredible.

Good points Nikon. The Wii download service never excited me. If I wanna play the games that bad that you can download, I'll buy them now not wait to download them.
Another example of the big hype machine Nintendo.

I agree, this was a bit fishy to release this game so soon to that of the Ninteno Wii. Yet, Sega to me, is the Mr. T of the industry. "I"m hurtin fo money!" "gimme work sucka!"
This is a great compliation however, especially for Phantasy Star IV, Golden Axe 3, Shinobi 3, Shadow Dancer, and three hidden bonus SMS games for the PS2 version.
Like others have said, where is Streets of Rage? Revenge of Shinobi? I'm surprised Virtua Fighter 2 MD got into this...

Yes, I too am very surprised to see Virtua Fighter 2 instead of Streets of Rage 2 on this compilation. I wonder if it has anything to do with the sound emulation for SOR2 that was really messed up on the DC Smash Pack.

Thanks. Yea I want to stress I am not trying to bash Nintendo. I am simply pointing out that the PS2 has a staggering amount of classic games via compilations.
The Wii obviously is going to offer those who are looking to download Nintendo's back catalogue some value. However for those who are more into the Genesis aspects of the Wii's service, the PS2 already has enough classic goodness to wet the appetite of those people. Plus we also get to wet our palets with Mega Man Anniversary, so we atleast get some classic Nintendo right there.
I just think it is interesting that before the Wii is even out of the gate, the PS2 will have over 460 classics in north america (more in japan, and near the same amount in pal regions). For anyone that likes their games in a hardcopy format and wants some classic games on a modern console, the PS2 is turning out to be a very appealing option in that regard.

Anyone know of anywhere that still sells the Sega Saturn PS2 controller (Would be perfect for this title)? Lik Sang is out of stock.

Sega's got my money, I can't wait to play Alex Kidd and Phantasy Star 4 on my PSP!

The inclusion of Streets of Rage 2 would certainly bump up the rating to a T. That's why Sega removed the series from Sonic Gems...I think it was Sonic Gems.

I'm sure titles such as Altered Beast, Eternal Champions, Golden Axe, etc., would already be accomplishing that? Or are those more tame than the Streets of Rage titles?

08-15-2006, 07:50 PM
I'm not sold, mostly because I own most of these titles anyway. And also comes the part of sound emulation. While I love the Treasure Box collection on the PS2, the sound is still not perfect.
Having no SOR sucks, Gain Ground was a intersting choise, and having VF2 MD is gay.

Oh sweet! I'm such a sucker... how many versions of the Phantasy Star games do I need to OWN! hehe.
That reminds me tho... is there now 0% chance that the Phantasy Star REMAKES will ever come out here in the US?
Huh... the release date is identical to Phantasy Star Universe. I guess the question now is how many PS games can I buy in one day??

OK, can somebody please tell me why the Genesis version of Virtua Fighter 2 is going to be on this disc? I mean, why would Sega let that... that SIN rub shoulders with such hits like Shinobi III, Flicky, and Phantasy Star II? Disgusting.
As long as the emulation is solid, I'm in.

Yea good point. Eternal Champions has blood, and fatalities as well. It is way more graphic than any of the SOR's.

Yes.
A Genesis games collection for PS2 and PSP is everything i wished.
My favorite Genesis games: Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, Comix Zone, Golden Axe Trilogy, Phantasy Star II, III and IV and Sonic 1 and 2 makes them presence in this collection.
But this some my other favorite games arenīt present in this collection.
There are:
- Alien Soldier
- Ayrton Sennaīs Super Monaco GP II
- Gunstar Heroes
- Kid Chameleon
- Revenge of Shinobi ( known as Super Shinobi in Japan )
- Shinning Force I and II
- Shinning in the Darkness
- Streets of Rage 1, 2 and 3
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Sonic and Knuckles
- Out Run
- Outrunners
- Turbo Out Run
In the future, we have a release of Genesis collection 2 for PS2 and PSP?
This is a question at the moment havenīt a answer.

Ayrton Sennaīs Super Monaco GP II would require licensing, and I'm not even sure the Senna family would allow it. Gunstar Heroes isn't owned by Sega I believe, though they did publish it for Treasure (Same deal for Alien Soldier).
Sonic 2 is included in the collection. And Sonic Mega Collection Plus is still available, no need to duplicate it entirely, though a sampling of the series seems appropriate for something called a Genesis Collection.
As for the Out Run titles, I wish they were included as well (And might as well throw in OutRun 2019 as well). Also would've liked some of their other Genesis ports of their older arcade titles, and more of their arcade titles to go along with Tac/Scan and the others.

Gunstar Heroes is owned by Sega. Sega owns all Treasure games from their inception until Guardian Heroes. "Sega, Genesis, and Gunstar Heroes are trademarks of SEGA" according to the back of the box.
