View Full Version : Nintendo Wii: Do you need to try before you buy?

Because of the unique nature of the Nintendo Wii, and it's control system, do you feel like you really need to try the system first, before you actually go ahead and purchase it? Do you feel like you need to actually tryout a real Wii game, with that controller, and see if it's something you'll like? Does the price of the Wii affect whether or not you feel you need to get some hands on time with the system prior to purchase?

An interesting question regarding the Nintendo Wii is just how Nintendo is going to handle the scenario with Wii Kiosks. There are a number of issues with having a Wii Kiosk at a Target or Wal-Mart. The first issue has to deal with the controller, how do people use it freely, while not allowing them to steal it or damage it? How do you make sure the person trying out the Kiosk doesn't get a very bad impression of the control scheme because they don't know what the F they are doing? It's going to be really interesting how Nintendo handles the whole Kiosk issue.

From what I've seen and read about it, I will buy it without any need what-so-ever to try it first! Simple as that.

The Wii is fairly cheap so i dont think i need to try it before i eventualy buy it, but i will most likely do it anyway hehe. If it totaly sux its not that big loss and i would have the console anyway :) Im sure theres going to be quite a few demo systems around so it shouldnt be a problem to try it first tho.

I'll try it first. I don't want to blindly buy a system, expecially one like the Wii that does something different. I wanna see how it works first.

I will definitely try it out first. Even if I am impressed with it (which I expect to be) I'll still probably hold off on one for about 6 months.

Nah, I don't need to try it, but I sure do need to buy it.

I posted this on another forum, but you'll get the idea how I feel.

I think its cool like anyone else that Nintendo is finally being the first guys to really tap into that user + game play interactivity. But from I’ve have seen mostly are gimmicks. Now for Nintendo’s defense, Games like Red Steel (Which reportedly is glitzy, slow moving, and not decently responsive to the users Wii remote commands), is a game that is doing exactly what I want to see. Zelda, and Metroid on the other hand, the Wii remote add on seems more the like gimmick than a new form of game play. Yes it’s cool to use the remote to shoot an arrow, or use the mic etc, and swinging the remote playing games like tennis, and maybe a voice recognition game (or a game that would use it) will be awesome.

But really now think for a moment, look at your TV. I use a 21 inch VGA monitor. That would get annoying, and old after a good while. For example, imagine playing Tennis on anything less than a 40 inch HD TV. It would SUCK period. There is no way me, and my friend could play together in a normal sized room (average bedroom), and effectively play the game the way it’s designed. 60 inch seems to be ideal here. The concepts I agree are awesome, but the demonstrations and video’s are very cinematic. Take for example the guy playing Metroid, you really wouldn’t jump out of your chair, nor would you want to wave your hand around for 5 hrs. “ But you can go back and use the regular controller”, yes I know, but then it just turns that element into a gimmick. Now games like “Dunk Hunt” would work in this setting, AS IT DID BACK IN 85.

As far as gaming, and system wise, if Nintendo makes it core franchise games like Mario, and add some new flavor franchises to it, they will be doing 10x better than the N64, and GC combined IMO. New franchises is a must! Think back to the golden era of gaming IMO, the SNES vs. SEGA days. Nintendo had its Marios, and Zeldas, but new one’s such as Star Fox, and Donkey Kong Country sprang about. Nintendo needs to do that again.

* For my defense, I’m not bashing Nintendo, and I’ve very excited about the Wii, but I have to look at it seriously for a moment.

* For some reason I feel guilty for saying this, but what Nintendo is doing, which is awesome, reminds me of what Sega was doing or trying to do with the Dreamcast. That’s just my personal take though.

I plan on buying my reserved system, and then trying a demo unit in the store if possible. If I really hate it for some reason, I figure that there will be at least a small profit to be made off of ebay. I dont expect the Wii to be near as rare or valuable as the PS3 initially.

It has a Nintendo logo on it. Of course I don't care how much it is, when it launches, or anything else for that matter...

I already have my preorder in , so on DAY 1 I will be playing my new Wii.

No, I don't need to try the console out before buying it. This console will be part of my collection without hesitation.

Well I am a collector so I guess I will buy it no matter what. But there is noway I am buying it the first month without trying it. I do not care if it sells at 150$. BUt I am never in a rush to get a new system at launch.

I don't need to try it. More people have already said that it works very nicely than people saying it is crap.

So, I'm buying it and a couple of games the day it comes out.

No need to try it..
I did not tried the NES and the SNES back then so..
And anyway if there is a problem with the controller I always can plug a GameCube one in it!

I WOULD buy one on day one, if my current and future cash flow wasn't so low, and it's gonna be expensive enough keeping up with all the awesome DS games that are forthcoming. Unfortunately, it looks like the Wii will be out of my grasp for quite some time. :(

Some of the early games will be gimmicky, probably, yeah. But I expect the second wave to kick ass, similar to what happened with ds. The developers will need some time to take advantage of the new hardware because as developers its going to require a new way of thinking for them.

For that reason, I don't feel the need to try. I feel like half the reason I'm buying is because of the potential a year after launch. Gotta love the back library too, and a couple hundred doesn't break the bank.

It's going to either be the Wii, or the 360 for me, so I want to try it out before shelling out the cash. I'll play with the demo at work for a little while and then come to a decision, much like I did with the DS.

For me, it's going to hinge on the price of the unit. If the Wii is $199.99, then I won't consider it mandatory to actually get some hands on time with it. If it's $229.99 or $249.99 or whatever, then I will definitely want to get some hands on time with that controller, and make sure there really is a compelling game for it that makes it a must own this holiday season.

Problem is, I also have this streak going with buying Nintendo home systems on the day of launch. I bought the SNES, N64 and Cube all on launch day, and in a strange way I would like to keep that streak going, but if it's above $199.99 then there better be a certain game that is extremely compelling, and I better really fall in love with the controller and the control schemes.

No need to try because I'm not going to be getting one. It's gonna fumble like N64 and Gamecube.

I'm going to wait on the wii for a year or two. The gamecube disappointed me greatly. Essentially whichever system has the most third party support (atlus, sega, capcom, konami, tecmo, namco, etc), is the system I'll get without hesitation.

I will not need to try it because I know Zelda and a new Metroid will be coming soon.

I believe that aaronpetrosky is trying to satire Xizer's behavior by becoming the anti-Xizer, and is not being serious.

lol yea that's part of it. I don't think I'll actually be getting one though. None of the games coming out for it really interest me. Not to say I'll never get one down the line but for now I'm honestly just saving up for a Ps3.

Definitely. If the controller isn't HIGHLY ACCURATE it's going to be another Power Glove.

Yes, I would - in an ideal world - like to try a Wii before I buy. But if I want to pick one up at launch... I don't really think I'll get that chance.

Still, if I really don't dig the freestyle controller... I'll always have the Virtual Console and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and any other games that make use of a bog-standard controller.

I'd still be happy, I reckon.

Good poll! Although, I wouldn't mind a choice for "wait until people on this forum buy it, try it, and post about it."

:)

There's definitely games at launch/near launch that interest me, but the control really has to be precise and responsive. Let's hope!
