Great List...would take quite awhile for me to compare it to what I have. Since your being so inclusive I think you ahould remove the 'since NES' and just make a complete RPG list for all systems. Might even get PC games included....

It's pretty much impossible to make a "definitive list" of RPGs. Probably more so than any other genre, people will argue over what should and shouldn't be classified as an RPG. I mean, does Zelda count? Does Harvest Moon? Does King's Field? That's just the tip of the iceberg. Heck, some people are inclined to label practically everything as an RPG if it has some anime characters and non-playable townspeople to chat with. First we need a definitive definition for what an RPG is before we can have a definitive list. I don't think we're ever going to get that, though, because with innovation comes new concepts which may go against the traditional view of the genre yet still manage to fall within it.

Festers Quest

I don't want to live in a world where Fester's Quest is considered an RPG.

Festers Quest

I don't want to live in a world where Fester's Quest is considered an RPG.

It's kind of a hybrid of Action RPG and shooter. But bosses are fought in a sort of first person dungeon crawler mode. A precursor to the much more traditional ARPG "Addams Family Values".

Can definately be axed in a stricter list, but for my collecting purposes I count it.

If Fester's Quest counts, then so should Blaster Master considering Sunsoft just cloned the walking scenes of the previous release and threw in the Addams Family theme.

Not that I'm saying either should count as RPGs. :P

I like the idea of having a 'liberal' list. It allows you to be comprehensive. If it is labeled as 'liberal' then it should eliminate the 'I don't think game so and so is(isn't) an rpg'. It is too difficult to define rpg for everyone. Oh well...

With things like Zelda on the list, I'd be leaning toward calling Rygar on the NES and RPG as well. It certainly has an action RPGish feel, at least to me.
Here's the SMS ones I can think of, if you're interested:
Phantasy Star
Miracle Warriors
