*****EDIT: This is an ancient thread, so note that it was revived almost 4 years later!*****

Hi Folks,

I've heard conflicting stories on this. I've heard 5 games, I've heard 6. Joe mentioned he didn't consider Darius Alpha one of them (could you explain, Joe?) And what the hell ever happenned to Strider? Anyone found a proto? They must be out there....I think some mags might have reviewed it even.

I pretty sure that they made 5 or 10 games for the system alone if i'm correct.

Please don't tell me you didn't know about our online game list/rarity library?

http://www.digitpress.com/lists.htm

Go! Study!

There's also a ton of info about the SuperGrafx and various PC Engine versions in our book, which I'm quite sure you own. Check out the hardware section and all will become clear =)

The answer is 5 or 7 depending on how you want to look at it. Five games were made specifically for the Supergrafx:

1941: Counter Attack
Aldynes
Battle Ace
Ghouls n Ghosts
Granzort

There were also two games that took advantage of the Supergrafx system, but also played on a regular PC Engine:

Darius Plus
Darius Alpha

Ghouls n Ghosts

If you're getting confused after reading the DP list, he means Diamakaimura. The SuperGrafx is a Japanese system, and Daimakaimura is the Japanese name (actually the original name) of Ghouls n Ghosts.

Yeah but I couldn't spell Diamakaimura off the top of my head. x_x

Is the SuperGrafx fully emulated by Magic Engine, other emus? NEC is sitting on a mountain of TG games they could've released as classic collections, emulated on modern consoles. I wonder why they don't.

That's Daimakaimura

Ok, cool. I knew there were at least 5. How do the Dariuses take advantage of the Supergrafx? Were some graphics more detailed (a lot of them or just a negligible amount?)?

And what about Strider?

Oh, and Joe, I checked the guide first, but not the onlne lists...didn't see it in the book.

Thanks again!

LOL I KNEW that! O_O

Strider wasn't released, but it is one of those titles that I keep hearing "is floating around", yet to date no one has come forward with proof. Again, check the list! It's in the RUMOR MILL.

Are we talking Strider for Supergrafx? Doesn't exist unless it's a proto, I guarantee it. There is a pretty damned rare one for the Duo CD system that's aracade card compatible though.

I believe it adds an extra layer of scrolling and reduces the flicker (due to it being able to handle more sprites). Nothing too interesting.

That IS the one they're talking about, but there HAS been a rumor that a prototype exists. There's also a rumor that the reason it wasn't released is because the programmer committed suicide about 70% into the project. I don't if either is true, but it surely wasn't released.

Magic Engine has full Super Grafx support. The games run perfectly on it. Woohoo!

I heard he just had a bad nervous breakdown and had to go into the hospital. God I hope no one would committ suicide over a game...

RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!!!!!

Ok, I know this is an ancient thread, but the topic came up on another site. I was hoping to find out Tempest and Slapdash's sources for the suicide and nervous breakdown rumors. It's all urban legend at this point, and it would be cool to find out something more definitive. Does anyone have anything on this topic?

A bit of an off-topic question but: is Granzort based on the Anime by the same name? Does anyone know where can I find info about it?

Yes Granzort is based on Anime of the same name.
It's a nice platformer where you can switch your robot between the 3 ones of the anime.

I remember watching the anime way back in 1991 or so. Do you know where can I get info about it? IŽd like to remember that part of my childhood XD

There's an extensive Granzort fansite here (http://www.geocities.com/janime1855/main.html), and an encyclopedia entry here (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2240). What's more, YouTube has the opening and several other clips. Just search for "Granzort."

I have a factory sealed Granzort for SuperGrafx, and I want to play the game so bad, but I just can't bring myself to open it. I've been trying to find a loose Granzort Hu card, but I haven't been able to track one down for a decent price. Opening a sealed R7, or whatever the rarity rating of it, would just seem to be a dumb idea.

I recently kept myself from buying a loose hucard off eBay; glad I did it too. Seemed pretty cheap to me at $20, hardly the mark of an R7. Of course, it may be crap, too (http://pcenginebible.roarvgm.com/HTML_Games/Granzort.htm).

It'd be a better game if the unshielded characters could take more than one hit before dying. As it is, Granzort plays like a harder, slightly more complicated version of those robot stages from Keith Courage. No surprise there, as both games were made by the same staff, and both were based on late-'80s Sunrise mecha shows.

I just heard it from someone who heard it from someone...

Although, it was alleged to have come from Famitsu originally. It anyone had a contact there, it might be confirmable or refuted as to whether THEY started the rumor or not...

Some people are quite adamant that this rumor is a pile of horsepoo. It's probably unfounded. Some of the lengths that people go to in order to "prove" this (i.e. omg there's a teddy bear in some capcom fighting game) are hillarious.

Whoa, Keith Courage was a TV show?

Oh yeah, wow.

I always thought it was sort of a random game...as if there was more backstory than they were letting on. However, the American name I still don't get.

So, someone posted this on the Lost Levels Message board:

It was a GREAT TV show, Wataru!
But they destroyed the PCE game in USA by renaming it and changing the sprite (Come on, KEITH COURAGE?!)

Was there a sequel to Keith Courage in Japan? I mean a sequel to the orignal game that Keith Courage was based on?

Adol

No,there wasn't..you have another Wataru game on Famicom, and others on Playstation (but those ones are based on the new Anime, not the original one)

Back to the original topic - there is supposedly an unreleased prototype of Galaxy Force 2 that no one has yet to mention.

And it's also mentioned on Wikipedia (even though I take that with a grain of salt).

And I remember seeing screenshots of the SG version of Strider everywhere. I always thought they did release it.
