NExt Gen article (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3643&Itemid=2)
The article states that the PS3 will lead the next generation battle by 2011, leading the Xbox 360 by a small margin. The Wii will only sell a third as much.

If there's one thing this world needs more of, it's uninformed people making predictions about things they don't understand. I'm sure the rest of this thread will address that concern.

That makes me giggle. I'm going to guess with the current speed of the gaming market that a whole new line of consoles are going to be out by 2011, that plus the fact that there simply is NO WAY that the PS3 is going to dominate the market. Sony's fucked themselves too bad this time, and I really don't know how they could save themselves. Unless they drop the price and manage to gain back a whole lot of exclusives. I predict Wii for the win, with the 360 close behind, and the PS3 even further behind.
But, that's just me.

You know, that article just didn't seem particularly in depth. I'd like to hear this fellow's reasoning, since most other analysts I've read seem to think that the 360 will be the winner this next generation.

2011 is a long way off.
Shouldn't we be visiting Jupiter by then?
Lets see here the PS2 was realeased in late 2001 and its 2006 now. Thats five years, and sony is comming out with it sucesor.
The PS3 is releasing in 2006 and it will take 5 years just to tie the 360? By that time it'll be to late. Well have new systems to be salavating over.
This is the most positive outlok I've seen for Sony and even this outlook looks bad for the PS3.

A Boston-based firm named the Yankee group?
My first instinct is to totally not trust a group like that, especially during baseball season.
(My second instinct is, of course, to notify the Nation, and have them deal with these filthy traitors.)
But seriously-2011? That's a long time from now. In this industry, it's utterly foolish to make that sort of prediction.

Actually the Yankee group does pretty good research and hires smart people usually. That being said I am not sure I agree with this prediction as sony might be trying to position themself as the 'premium' product in the market when all that matters are the games. I don't think this round of hardware wars will be like any we've with each offering being more unique than the any other and a wide range of initial prices and pricing models. Also 2011 is when the price of a PS3 will probably be in the range that I am willing to pay for it and there will probably be enough good games for me to go out and buy it!

No one, i mean no one can predict the future. Some research might be done of course, but the final outcome will be pure speculation.

I think the 360 will win this new generation of gaming in the USA, but having said that, I don't think the prediction the guy is making is too off base. For example, if you look at the Sega Genesis, one could argue that the Sega Genesis really won the 16-bit war in the U.S. considering during the peak time of 16-bit the Genesis was winning. Sure, Sega left the 16-bit market too early, while Nintendo kept pumping out games and sticking with 16-bit and then really catching up in market share late.
I can see the same exact thing happening with the 360 and PS3. The 360 is the Genesis, and the PS3 is the SNES. The 360 will dominate early, and will control the market during the peak of this new generation (2008,2009), but I'm guessing by late 2009, Microsoft will be talking about their next sytem. The PS3 in 2009, will finally be at a mass market price, and by this time, developers should really be able to make the PS3 sing, using it's 1080p power, and the storage of Blu-Ray and all the cores of the Cell, etc, etc.
Ultimately, by 2011, when all is said and done, sure the PS3 might actually have the larger installed base by that time, but the key factor is that the 360 will dominate during the peak of this generation, and the PS3 will be trailing the 360 until the very end of this life cycle. One thing I will agree with Sony, is that the PS3 is built to last. I'm not saying it's build quality is good, I'm saying the tech is very state of the art and will give that system staying power for a long time. When we start to get into late 2009 and into 2010, I think the PS3 is really going to start to display it's superiority over the 360 in terms of the kind of powerfull experiences that one can have on the PS3. Having said that, I still think the 360 will outsell the PS3 in Xmas 2009. But when we hit 2010 and 2011, I think the PS3 will make a late push, and barely eclipse the 360 in terms of total numbers.
As for the Nintendo Wii, my take on the Wii, is that it's going to have alot of hype and support early on, but I think people are going to buy it at launch, be very excited, but 6 or 8 months later, I think people are going to see the Wii for what it really is. A GameCube 1.5 with a gimmick control scheme. The Wii will still do well with grade school kids, and pre-teens, but I just don't think it will do that great long term. I think it will have about a 20 percent share instead of 14 percent though. But again, I think the Wii is going to have a good 2006, 2007, but then people are going to quickly get tired of it, and move on to the 360 and PS3, especially as those consoles get more affordable. Things will look really good for the Wii for awhile, but then you are going to see alot of Wii's collecting an awful lot of dust when we get into late 2007 and 2008. The gimmick and hype will have worn off, and what will be left is a GameCube 1.5, with a "somewhat" inovative controller. I actually think the controller idea is a really, really good one, but I don't think it's going to be implemented correctly on this first attempt. By the way, if the Wii is $199 or less, I'm getting one at launch, but I'm considering the Wii to be a system that I'll have for like 2 years or so, and then ultimately it will be dusty as fuck, just like my GameCube was.
