I'd heard of the OutRun series but my first exposure to it wasn't until I picked up the Sega Classics Collection on PS2. I know this anthology gets a bad rap for not being the arcade originals but I really enjoyed the visually updated OutRun on that disc. The second OutRun game I ever played was OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast. I guess this was the game that really kickstarted my interest in the series. Not only does it have the full arcade version of OutRun 2SP, but it also has songs from the original 1986 OutRun and songs from an 1989 OutRun game.
I really like this series branching stages, different locations and killer soundtrack. This series to me is getting up there with Burnout and Ridge Racer as one of my favorite arcade racing series.
BTW, does the SMS have a good port of the original OutRun?

The only Outrun I'm familiar with is the first one, played the arcade game a couple times and wasn't very good at it. :/
I really dig the music, though. Especially.... Passing Breeze? The one that sounds like cheesey 1980 soap opera music.

Something underlooked is without a doubt the Outrun set in the future, I forget its name. With its branching paths and interesting [if cliched] locations, it was quite appealing to me.

I think that was Outrun 2019 on the genesis.
I've always been fond of the Master System version. It's as good an arcade translation as can be expected from an 8-bit machine. The music is actually really good. If you own a SMS pick it up. It's pretty easy to find it cheap.

Yeah its pretty cool that you can play the original Out Run in Shenmue 2. You see the original arcade cab and everything. I too have just recently regained interest in the series. I also have the sega classic version which I too think get short handed. I also own the original OutRun 2 for xbox as well as OutRun Coast to Coast for xbox. Great games.

I love the Outrun games. Nothing beats playing them on a real arcade machine, which i've only done a few times but the feeling is just superb.
I played quite a bit of OutRun on the Dreamcast (Shenmue II or whatever) and find it really hard actually, you have to be spot on with your turns to make them count and I've never completed it :/
I caved in and bought a PS2 a few weeks ago and the only thing (until tonight) I played on it was OutRun 2006:Coast 2 Coast. Love the way it contains both Outrun2 and SP tracks. The SP tracks do look like a leap above. I think this game is amazing, so many modes and the music is supurb, of course 90% of the time i just listen to one of the 3 available versions of the 3 original tracks

I'm a big fan of OutRun. It's one of the few arcade machines I would shell out the money for if there was one available for sale near here.
The Master System version of OutRun is very good. It's a quite accurate port of the arcade game, and everything looks and sounds smooth. There's also OutRun 3-D, but unless you have the 3-D Glasses to go with it, it's nowhere near as good as the regular version. However, OutRun 3-D also has some brand new songs on it, which are only available on this game.*
...which brings me to the music of OutRun. The music, in my opinion, is great. One of these days I want to pick up the OutRun II OST, which not only contains all the music featured in OutRun II (and the arranged versions of the original music), but also contains the original arcade's music as well. My favorite would have to be Splash Wave, followed by Last Wave.
And I have to agree, the OutRun version on Sega Classics Collection is also very good, as well. The Rival mode is very interesting to play, but I always lose at it. :(
* = One thing that's always plagued me: Were the original songs on OutRun 3-D composed by Hiroshi Miyauchi, or Tokuhiku Uwabo?

Outrun is a great classic game. It has been ported to the following
ZX Spectrum
C64,
Atari ST
Amiga
SMS
Game Gear
Sega Genesis/Megadrive (excellent version)
Sega Saturn
PS2 (remake)
PC Engine (excellent version)
GBA
Then there are the other Outrun games:
Outrun 2019 (Sega Genesis/Megadrive)
Outrunners (Arcade, Sega Genesis/Megadrive)
Turbo Outrun (Arcade, Sega Megadrive)
Outrun Europa (SMS, Amiga, Game Gear)
If you like the music in Outrun, you should check out the SST Band Arranged albums (Top Notch stuff).

I have to agree with the other guys, the SMS version of Out Run is awesome. For whatever reason, I preferred that version to the Turbografx and Genesis ports (although the Genesis port is notable for having an exclusive fourth tune).
If you're looking for something "arcade perfect", it was beautifully ported to Saturn, as part of the Sega Ages line (by itself in Japan, or on Sega Ages US). I think the Japanese version has optional remixed music that was removed from the US compilation release.
Out Run 2019 for Genesis is a great sequel. Instead of one track that keeps branching out, it has four different tracks, and they branch out once and then go back together, and then branch out again. The scenery is great, the original music is great, the scaling is pretty damn good for Genesis, and it's just really fun.
I also recommend Out Run Europa for Master System and Game Gear. It's Out Run in name only, but it's still quite a fun game.

I'm still rather pissed there is no arcade perfect port of "Turbo Outrun".

I have OutRun (SMS), Battle OutRun (SMS), Turbo OutRun (Mega Drive) and OutRun 2 (XB).
I used to have OutRun 2019 on Mega Drive but I got rid of it because I thought it was shit. And apparently, in Japan it wasn't even an OutRun game, just some generic racer. Sega of America looked at it and thought: "OUTRUN IN THE FUTURE", and renamed it for a western release.
I found it generic, yet highly reminiscent of Top Gear 2. TG2 is FAR better though.
The SMS port of OutRun is VERY good, considering the hardware, although there's quite a lot of sprite clipping which can be quite annoying.
Battle OutRun is pretty much just a Chase HQ clone and is pretty fun.
Turbo OutRun is excellent - pretty much just the original OutRun remixed with nitro.
OutRun 2 is by far my favourite in the series and will go down as one of my favourite racing games of all time. The mission mode is AWESOME. I've only got a couple missions to go before I finish it.
I haven't bothered getting OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast as I heard it was just OutRun 2 with some extra tracks. That said, I'll probably pick it up on PSP so I have portable OR2 with me. :D

14 replies already? Didn't think this thread would do this well.
I can find some complete versions of the SMS OutRun easy at this one place where I frequently shop for retro games. Battle OutRun, however, may be a bit more difficult to come by.
And yes, the music of this series is just freaking sweet. The original OutRun tunes rock and I love the new songs from OutRun 2. I also love the songs from OutRun 1989. Shake The Street, Who Are You, Keep You Heart, Rush A Diffilcuty all rock hard. Oh and the Euro Remix for Magical Sound Shower is too good.
For those that have played OutRun 2 but not Coast 2 Coast, the games are very similar from what I've read but IMO, Coast 2 Coast is still worth the $30. Plus you get the arcade version of OutRun 2 SP available from the get go. There's a lot of stuff you can buy with OutRun miles, too. I've bought most of the songs, but I need the PSP version of Coast 2 Coast be able to get the last 5 songs (lame). My only gripe with Coast 2 Coast is your girlfriend. Her dialogue is limited but she's still annoying. I prefer my girlfriends in OutRun games to be seen, not heard.

Don't do it! The PSP version is frame rate hell. Actually ruins the experience. I have all 3 versions of C2C, and the PSP game is awful. PS2 & XBox are both excellent.
As for the series itself, I have almost every console iteration, including 3-D & Battle, minus Europa. Battle is the worst. 3-D is much better than most people care to admit, though not as good as the original on the SMS and not quite worth its going price for the non-collector.
I got Out Run Europa on C-64 and SMS, and Out Run and Out Run Europe for GG.
The C-64 of Out Run Europa version is excellent.

I love OutRun. It's easily my favorite arcade game of all time, and I definately plan on trying to get an original evo cab when I have the space.
I used to have pretty much every version of the game, but over the years have traded or sold them for other things. I loved OutRun 2 on the Xbox when I had it (especially on live), but since I don't own an orginal XB anymore and it's not BC I'm gonna have to pick up the PS2 version.

I played it on an in-store unit, and I didn't find any frame rate issues. I only played one race though, so I'm guessing that wasn't a good showcase for the game as a whole - but I found it decent enough.
Might wait 'til it's dirt cheap as I could live with the frame rate issues, given it's portability.

My favorite Out Run games:
- Out Run ( Mega Drive / Genesis ): This a good game. Very similar to Arcade version.
- Turbo Out Run ( Mega Drive / Genesis ): Other good Out Run Game.
- Out Runners ( Mega Drive / Genesis ): Conversion of the Arcade version and a extra challenger - the Virtua Formula from Virtua Racing.
- Out Run 3D ( Master System ): In my opinion this game is better than Out Run for Master System.
- Battle Out Run ( Master System ): One of my favorite Master System games.
This game is the opposite the Out Run concept.
Battle Out Run is foccused in chasing criminals.
Other difference is the truck where opperates a parts shop for the car upgrade.
The car of Battle Out Run ressembles a Ferrari F40.
I have a expectative to play Out Run 2006 Coast 2 Coast for PS2 and PSP.

Outrun Europa on master system is an awesome game, the graphics in it are really great, no flicker or slowdown at all. Although it doesnt really share that much with the original, it does at least prove that the sms could have done a much better version of outrun than the original port.

B-Mark, thanks for the link to that OutRun website.
I also forgot that I have OutRunners on the Genesis but I read that it was nowhere near as good as the arcade version. The forced split screen mode turned off a lot of players. From what I played, I actuallyed liked. Good tunes and nice selection of cars.
Playing Coast 2 Coast as I type this. Man, Night Flight is one of the best songs. Ever.

True story which still haunts me to this date: I finished the original arcade (sit down cab version) with a friend, taking turns. JUST as we finished the last leg/course of the game, the owner of the arcade pulled the plug to the machine because he was closing...the f****er.

I've never played the SMS OutRun. Did you drift around sharp turns in that game or was that something that didn't happen until OutRun 2? Also, how is the Genesis version of OutRun compared to the SMS version? Of the two, the Genesis version is tough to come by.

Out Run is one of my all-time favorites. I remember playing the arcade version when it first came out while I was on vacation in 1986 or '87. The Master System version was excellent for its time, though its a bit on the choppy side. The absolute biggest problem with the SMS version is due to the 2-button layout of the SMS controller and the fact that the d-pad is used not only to turn but to change gears as well. This results in many inadvertent gear changes. The Genesis version, of course, does not have this problem. It is excellent and nearly arcade perfect.

Using the Sega Control Stick, I have never accidentally changed gears in Out Run.
What I didn't like about the Genesis version is how it remixed the tunes -- for the worse, IMO. But that new song is pretty good. Although it does have more detailed and smoother graphics than the SMS version, it's far from "arcade perfect"; if you want that, play it on Saturn.

The Genesis version is almost arcade perfect? Maybe by the standards 15 years ago, but it's not even close today when you compare it to the arcade version. I'd say the GBA port is closer to being arcade perfect than the Genesis version, which doesn't stand the test of time very well today when there are versions out there that are accurate.

Hmmm. Actually sounds like the SMS version of OutRun is better than the Genesis version. Which actually seems rather odd. Oh well. I'll definitlty snag both if I get the chance. And I'm gonna see if I can get a copy of Sega Arcade Gallery so I can have some portable OutRun.
Has anyone ever gotten to play the OutRun sit down cabnet? Man, I'd love to own one of those things. Bet they cost some major green, though.
Curious: anyone that played OutRunners on the Genesis, what did you think of it? I honestly didn't think it was a bad game but I can see some thinking it was crap if they played the arcade version.
So the tunes dubbed OutRun 1989 in OutRun '06: C2C are from Turbo OutRun? Very nices music in that game, then. I absolutely LOVE "Who Are You." My favorite Euro Remix OutRun tune of the original OutRun game is "Splash Wave." That song is ultimate tier in my book.

Well, since the Genesis came out more than 15 years ago, what other standards would one use, Mr. Ames? :onfire: I was responding to his question about the SMS/Genesis versions of Out Run. He didn't ask about the GBA version (or the Saturn, for that matter, which is arcade perfect). Anyway, RegSNES, as someone who's played the game since it came out, personally, I think either the SMS or Genesis versions are worth picking up (I have both and still play them). They're both very good for what they are, even though they obviously don't meet the high standards of our friend Leo Ames.

It was never released in the U.S. I don't know about Japan.
I absolutely love the Saturn version. Probably because it's perfect. Honestly I was not impressed with the SMS version of Out Run. To me it is nearly unplayable. The graphics are choppy and it seems like there are hardly any cars on the road. In the Saturn version, there are cars everywhere, including semis. I'm not sure but I don't think the SMS version even has semi trucks, only cars.
I've heard people malign the SMS version of Space Harrier (or Space Harrier 3-D), but even though it is kind of choppy I think it's a much better effort than Out Run.
BTW, I sold a copy of Out Run 3-D on eBay a while back, it pulled over $70. Not bad.

The Mark III was dead in Japan by about the start of 1989, long before it's premature US death, so there's even fewer JP releases (about 85) than there are in the US (114).
And as has been stated, European copies of OutRun 3D were also distributed in Canada (with a different UPC sticker).

Yes, it's true. The three courses from each game are arranged in one long track. You first play through one lap of the Sega GT tracks, followed by one lap of each of the Daytona 2 tracks. Each track of the six is separated by the traditional OutRun stage-change S curve. Quite a nice bonus. Wish you could separate them out & increase laps and/or use the cars from said games, but beggars can't be choosers.

Analog stick all the way. The XBox controller's triggers are best for accel/brake, but setting them to L2 & R2 on the PS2 controller helps a bit. If you have an XBox, go for that version for both control and graphical reasons. It also has a custom soundtrack option that can be a nice change of pace. Only drawback is that you need to buy it online, but it is completely worth it.

I also use analog steering when I'm playing C2C, though at times it can be hard for me to get my car straight again after drifting. Maybe I just need to better myself at coming out of drifts.
I went back and played the Sega Classics Collection of OutRun. I still don't think it's a bad game. I'll be picking up the SMS version of OutRun over the weekend. I'm also hopping I can score a copy of Sega Arcade Gallery.
I've seen the following things in the sky as I'm driving in C2C at times: a dragon, a hang glider, a fighter jet, and some unicorns. Now I'm guess those things are from Panzer Dragoon, AfterBurner. Don't know what the others are from.

I dunno if the XBOX version is online only but that is the only place i have ever seen that version of the game.
I'd say that the airplane is a reference to "Afterburner" except that it is a different airplane than the one used in "Afterburner".
In AB you flew an F-14 (think "Top Gun") but in C2C the airplane that flies over looks more like an F-18 (What Will Smith flew in "Independence Day").
Arcade AB still tops it for other game references as it contains both the "Outrun" car and the "Super Hang On" bike.

Coast 2 Coast for Xbox isn't online only, as I've seen it in a few stores (particularly Fry's). However, its availability is pretty limited.

I mostly take the left path in the forked roads in C2C. Seems like its a lot easier. I always make it to the goal. I've made it to the goal by taking the right path but I've failed many times and the path seems more difficult. Is there a set easy/hard path in OR games.

Generally, the left path is easier and the right path is harder. Therefore, going left-left-left-left-left would be the easiest route possible, while going right-right-right-right-right would be the hardest route. Dunno if this applies to all OutRun games, but I know that's how it goes for the original.

I found the "Hard" sections in C2C to be far easier when driving on them reversed.
Especially that damn NYC level.

Outrun is a great classic game. It has been ported to the following
ZX Spectrum, C64, Atari ST, Amiga, SMS, Game Gear, Sega Genesis/Megadrive (excellent version), Sega Saturn, PS2 (remake), PC Engine (excellent version), GBA
It was ported twice to the MSX, in Japan for Pony Canyon and in Europe for U.S. Gold, the people who screwed up every home computer release of that game.
I don't fancy the Master System port much. It's better than if U.S Gold had done it, but it's hardly pushing the boundaries of the system, and the music is awfully rendered (and only slightly better if played with an FM attachment).
The only contemporary ports worth playing are the ones for Megadrive and PC Engine.

Does C2C have adjustable difficulty levels hidden somewhere? Think I'm playing it on easy because even with multiple crashes I'm able to finish races in any direction I go with the Xbox port?
Well, since the Genesis came out more than 15 years ago, what other standards would one use, Mr. Ames? :onfire: I was responding to his question about the SMS/Genesis versions of Out Run. He didn't ask about the GBA version (or the Saturn, for that matter, which is arcade perfect). Anyway, RegSNES, as someone who's played the game since it came out, personally, I think either the SMS or Genesis versions are worth picking up (I have both and still play them). They're both very good for what they are, even though they obviously don't meet the high standards of our friend Leo Ames.
Sorry that I made you cry. I didn't realize that you were such a sensitive one that couldn't handle someone disagreeing with what you said.

However, its availability is pretty limited.
You're telling me. No shop (and we're talking more than 30 here) had a copy when I was visiting QoF last month, and I wanted to get it for her. Ended up buying the PS2 version instead. I even asked a couple of guys to check it in their system and they had no listing for it!

I checked the options settings in C2C on the PS2 version, but the only place I could set the difficulty was on OutRun 2SP, the arcade game.
The higher class cars are fast but a bit tougher for me to control. I have to start drifting sooner than I would with the regular class cars and in some cases, I just have to flatout brake.
Still haven't beaten either of the 15 Stage OutRun courses. :hmm:
