We all play old video games, right? We all meet here and talk about old games and many aspects of them, but have you ever noticed that we very rarely ever talk about playing them? We never discuss strategies, patterns... gameplay stuff, you know? How come?

I personnaly never play video games. With all the stuff going on about video game epilepsy, I don't want to risk a seizure at my age ;)

I think it's because the members here play such a wide variety of games. The only successful gameplay threads I've seen are ones for brand new games that are extremely popular i.e. Guitar Hero or New Super Mario Bros.

Also, I think most people just make a quick trip to gamefaqs when they need help in a game, instead of asking here.

Actually we do. There are numerous of thread about <insert game here> where everything is being discussed :)

EDIT: I see you talking about more classic games, then the case is different. I really dont know why, maybe much of the stuff have already been talked about during the years, no idea.

Well, I think we talk about playing games as well. In threads about certain games, eg the one about Super Mario Land recently, and then in general big threads like the "What games are you playing, daily check" thread, which i like adding to daily with my comments

I've posted/asked a few q's re: certain games, hoping someone here has encountered the same thing. Mostly they go unnoticed/unanswered, I cant think of one that ever was answered.

I heard here about a save glitch for Sphinx & the Cursed Mummy (PS2) & asked about the specifics- it's the only thing keeping me from playing it.

LOL Chandler you crack me up at times. We play games and we collect games. Some of us ended up collecting because we play so many games. Obviously you think nobody plays games around here because you made two threads about it.

I personally play alot of games, some way to much. I also have a large collection because I don't like to get rid of the games I have. Hence forth I became a collector.

Now the other point is that this sites focus is about collecting games more then playing them, that is why there is a rarity guide built into the site.

To be truthful though I think you would be surprised as to how many gamers are really around here.

"Videogames were meant to be collected, not played."

Sounds like the truth, huh? I have so many games I haven't played in ages, but I just cannot part with them.

Yeah. My latest conquest is FIFA Soccer... for the 3DO. I don't think a "who's playing 3DO FIFA?" thread would see a lot of conversation.

However, you do see a fair number of threads for somewhat more popular classics (ie Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Super Metroid, SM64). So I don't agree that we *never* talk about gameplay...there just aren't as many threads like that as one would think.

Well, I'm always one for talking about games. I make some of the longest posts in the daily playing topic, just because I like to talk about what I'm doing in my current game and how I feel about it instead of just making a checklist of what I've turned on. I don't know if anyone is interested in reading what I write half the time, but I don't really care. :P Also, since my tastes are often quite obscure, I bet a lot of people haven't even heard of a lot of the games I play. Oh well, doesn't really matter either way to me since I like to yammer on about games regardless if anyone is listening, hehe.

There's more emphasis on getting/maintaining games compared to actually playing them, that's for sure.

Or just general discussion.

Surprised at how many gamers are at a video game website? :hmm: I dunno, seems pretty obvious to me.

With how often this stupid debate happens I wish it was that obvious.

Well, most people just want to follow up on games that are old with things like rarity/worth/value of game and what not. Some of those are people that were growing up in the later 90's and never really touched an Atari, NES, SMS or had lack there of with the library of games for each. Every now and then someone finds a very interesting game and wishes to share and that's when the game discussions begin, but this is with classic gaming.

Over in modern gaming nothing has really been talked about and everyone must communicate about what's hot and what's not. Lots of game reviews, discussions, hype of new releases, systems, ect. Things have already been talked about in classic for years so modern is where most of what you're asking for is.

Well, I just played Keystone Kapers...
Fun game! Pretty cool. They have it up the road loose (ya, like always) for $1 but not in the best shape. It's a good game and quite common and should be picked up whenever people get a chance.

Why do we always have these threads? You can't categorize everyone's personal tastes and habits. We all do what we want to and that's the end of the story if you ask me. It's about the love of the hobby as a whole, not which "side" you're on.

And beyond that, this is a somewhat more specialized forum anyway. Do you go to gamefaqs boards and ask why they never talk about collecting? Sorry if I sound pissed here but this comes up WAY too often.

If you took time to look harder in the forums, you would answer your own question x_x

I've found that unless you're playing something that is considered an absolute, surefire, can't miss classic, you'll end up just talking to yourself.

You'd need to do something like MAME club - where you suggest a game, people that are interested play it, and then you can talk about it.

Otherwise we're all just playing too many different games to make any conversation meaningful. The last console game I played was "Champions: Return To Arms" - and I bet I'm probably the only one who played that this week.

The last retro game I played was Adventure - but really, what could I say that hasn't been said? That I had one of my fastest runs through it ever (I got lucky with the key and chalice placement).

Well, if you wanna start a conversation about FIFA soccer games in general, go ahead... but I can tell you that I suck at those games (6-0 loss in FIFA 2002 for PSX anyone?).

Even when I was a kid I enjoyed collecting games on my C64 more than actually playing them.

Now I get more enjoyment by finding a great old game and watching my son try it out.

Hold on, you're saying that you can play these things? Far out ....
