My store got the game in early, so I feel "qualified" to start this thread. I'd imagine there are a few people already playing it online.

Thoughts on the game, anyone? How does it compare to last year? What features have improved or got lost? What system are you playing it on? How is the online play this time around?

Last year's X360 versions had plenty of faults, but it looked nice. When you compare the detail on IGN's screengrabs between that game and Madden 07 for X360 it looks as though there has been a notable drop in things like textured material on pant legs, etc.

I can only hope this is a result of the shots being taken from a preview build and not a result of cross-platform design somehow limited by the common ground between the X360 and the PS3.

Madden 06:Screenshot (http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/742/742471/img_3140952.html)

Madden 2007:Screenshot (http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/811/811804/img_3743492.html)

I just grabbed those two randomly. Seems to me that 2007 is noticeably inferior in the "insanely small details" department. May just be the shots I've seen, but I'm a little hesitant to rave about it until I get it on my HDTV to see for myself. I'm sure I'll still buy it, as long as they've fixed the glaring gameplay issues and omissions from last year's title.

I bought the 360 on it's launch day, and one of the main games that I was really hyped about was Madden. I've always been a huge fan of the NFL, and video games, so naturally I want to play a new NFL game every year. I prefer the 2K series, but with the exclusivity, obviously that's not an option. When I first got the 360 Madden, for about 2 weeks I tried desperately to convince myself that I really, really liked the game, but after about 2 weeks, I realized that it was a rush job, and pretty crappy when you get down to it. Sure, it wasn't total garbage, but it had alot of issues.

Having said all of that, I'm hoping to get Madden soon after the 22nd launch via my rental service, and I hope that the game has made major improvements, and I'm willing to accept it with open arms. If it sucks again, that will be quite painful, but I'm just going to have to wait and see. The game looks good when they show all the replay cameras and stuff, but the actual "in game" gameplay footage doesn't look all that improved from last year. I'm just basing that on the trailers that I've seen via Xbox Live. Well, I guess in about a week or so I'll know what the deal is. By the way, if the game is really good, maybe we can have a little DP league for the guys that like Madden and have a 360 and Xbox Live. Everybody could have 2 teams, one in AFC and one in NFC, and we can follow the regular NFL Schedule, right along with the real season. I'm sure it would be pretty fun. If one of our teams plays our self, then we have to choose a team to take a loss or something like that.

Anyway, In case people havent noticed, Circuit City is selling the game for a considerable discount this week; $12 off, no matter what system it is for. So the 360 version is $47.99 instead of $59.99, the PS2/XBox version is $37.99 iinstead of $49.99, and the PSP and Gamecube versions are $27.99 instead of $39.99. I've been thinking about getting the PSP version, but I want to read some reviews first.

Crap. According to everything I've read, it looks like there is once again NO COOPERATIVE PLAY in the Xbox 360 version. That is, you and a "real life" friend can't play on the same team against another couple of buddies. Only 2 players per console, and then only versus each other. Why do I even own 4 controllers?

This was a glaring omission in last year's Xbox 360 debut, which even had 4 controller icons on the team selection screen despite being able to fill only 2 of the slots. Most complainers were assured that this would be included in the 2007 version alongside other missing niceties, such as challenging a call.

Wrong, apparently. Still only 2 players, unlike almost every other football game since the PS1. My brother and I love(d) playing as QB and wide receiver, both against the CPU or against other friends.

I'm ticked, and heading out to cancel my preorder. I'll still be getting the revamped DS version to play on the go, but it looks like no new console football for me this year ... for the first time in over a decade.

EDIT: And where the heck are all the screenshots for the DS version? It is reported to have received a significant overhaul from the two previous disappointing installments ... but I've seen a grand total of four poorly composed screenshots. Anyone have a link to more?

Perhaps. I want to wait and see what the reviews say about technical glitches, bugs, and annoyances. I certainly would not have paid $27 for last years PSP Madden.

i mentioned that because getting caught by the company selling a street dated item early usually penalizes the stores that do in the future by usually sending a smaller supply of the next major release or deleayed shipment. Larger stores dont need to worry about it too much since the publishers know they sell large numbers of product for them. smallers stores, like joes can be hurt by that crap.

i know, at gamestop we had to call in any time we heard of a store selling the DS lite early and that was a street dated item as well.

I think what they were getting at was that he was WELL AWARE of that fact.

The Super Star mode is terrible on the 360. You can't choose the play or the view perspective of the game, regardless of which position you choose.

Franchise mode at least gets you the "normal" madden mode and you don't have to use the QB vision if you don't want too.

The achievements are actually something that may take more then a day to complete, which is actually a nice thing for once.

The graphics aren't over the top great, it looks decent in 720p but nothing to write home about. The game hesistates at times, especially in SS mode which is really annoying (you can hear the disc going crazy). Lastly why can't anyone give us a cool looking crowd??

I'm seriously underwelmed by this game, big surprise there.

It is a huge step up from last year though. Lead blocker controls are great, though I can see it being heavily abused. The Live franchise mode is a great concept too, though I haven't tried it. The Hall of Fame is really nice, complete with videos.

That said, the superstar mode is crap, DB AI is awful, and the menus are confusing as hell. Took me five minutes to figure out how to make a sub. There are roster issues to, with the Hall of Fame unlocked players ending up on the free agent list ( @_@ ), no fatigue showing on the play selection screen, and incorrect starters. I don't know why Griese is starting QB on the Bears when the opening cinematic shows Grossman.

Sloppy as usual, but still decent. I put a little time into the Xbox version and was mildly happy there too. Superstar mode is far moe refined.

OK, anyone else have both the 06 and 07 versions for X360 and an HDTV? I have gone back and forth between the two for nearly an hour and I swear 06 looks TONS better when the camera is close to the players, such as pre-snap cutscenes or instant replays.

Every different type of fabric on the uniforms, sweat on the arms, lighting on the jerseys seems to look undeniably better in last year's game.

I.E. I play with the Steelers and their pants look like flat-shaded bright yellow polygons in 07 but are obviously a rich gold woven synthetic material in 06. Am I hallucinating, or is there someone out there that can check this? Major step backwards IMHO, but none of the review sites seem to have mentioned it.
