I've been on a Zelda kick lately. I'm playing through all the Gameboy, GC, GBA Zeldas on my Mac in emulation right now.

I was suddenly reminded of Neutopia 1 & 2 for the TG-16. This got me thinking. What other Zelda clones were released on other systems.

Specifically, I'd like a list of top overview action adventure games that don't venture too far from the gameplay style of Zelda 1 & 3 (not that bastard of a game Zelda 2).

Golden Axe Warrior for the Sega Master System, one of my favorites. Very close to the original Zelda.

Don't forget Golvellius: Valley of Doom on SMS as well

*edit* Can't forget Alundra (first one) on PS1

Dark Cloud was Sony's response to combat Nintendo's Zelda. The first one sucked, but the second one was supposed to be good.

the first dark cloud was horrible. I had to double take while looking at the game because it looks like link on the cover.

i bought it hoping it would be the same, but it ended up being a horrible game that bored the heck out of me.

i've yet to play the 2nd one though

Thanks for the excellent suggestions, keep em coming.

If I like the roms, I'll end up getting the carts. I find these games to be easy to control with a keyboard under emulation. Makes for a great break at work and the like.

Crusader of Centy on the Genesis...
Beyond Oasis for Genesis (Though I think it mimics Secret of Mana more)

Those were two that immediately came to my mind. I would also count Landstalker, but due to the isometric view of play, it isn't quite like a Zelda clone. But it does retain the same basic gameply elements of a Zelda title.

Yeah, the first one sucked big time. But I did happen to buy the second one after reading tons of good reviews. And it is an awesome game. One of my favorite games on the PS2.

Mainly every thing is better designed, the cel-shaded look is great. The story is much, much better. And you can make your own weapons for your robot which is really cool. And it keep the good ol' down building emlement. I would highly suggest you check into it.

Now as for the thread. I do agree Dark Cloud was something like Zelda, but I believe it burrowed more elements from Actraiser then it did the Legend of Zelda. I can't really think of a Zelda clone. I hear Landstalker is similar to the Legend of Zelda.

Golvellius seems real odd at first with the sidescrolling guy who only looks to the right. But it does change for the better... at least that's how I remember it LOL

Alundra on the psx is another super obvious clone of Zelda.. although the game is pretty darn hard.

And of course on the NES we got Zelda clone Crystalis. and maybe Star Tropics...

I never liked Golvellius at all, but maybe I didn't play it enough to get into it.

One series that no one's mentioned is Ys. Those games are some of my favorite action RPGs around for sure. I actually have a copy of Ys Book 1 & 2 for the Turbo CD that I picked up at a flea market years ago even though I've never owned a Turbo CD system. I guess I should try emulating it. Ys 1 on the SMS and Ys 3 on the Genesis were absolutely fabulous, though. I think there's a couple more sequels on the SNES, too.

Magic Knight Rayearth on the Saturn is the best 2D Zelda clone ever.

If I remember correctly, Monkey Hero for Playstation had a Zelda feel to it. It's been a long time since I've played it last.

Final Fantasy Adventure (not to be confused with the FF Legend series) for Gameboy. About as close as you can get to Zelda short of Zelda itself.

Neutopias are the ones which come to my mind. Great to know there are others...will have to get them!

Sylvan Tale on the Game Gear. Sadly it's Japanese only, so to understand the story you need to emulate it and get the translation patch. Great game, one of very few GG titles I cared enough about to buy complete (along with Shinobi II: The Silent Fury, which also takes some cues from Zelda).

There was another...damn, forgot what I was going to write. Will post if I remember it later!

It is said that Marvellous for the Super Famicom actually uses the same engine as A Link to the Past. Unfortunately, it's still Japanese-only.

For years without ever really thinking about I'd always assumed that was the cover to some Zelda game.

Spiritual Warfare is basically "LoZ: Christian Edition." And as far as Zelda clones go, I quite liked it.

Other Zelda clones are the games Neutopia 1 and 2 for PC Engine / Turbografix 16.

Neutopia are produced by Hudson Soft and this games are avaliable in Japanese and English.

Neutopia 1 and 2 are good games for the system.

E.G.G. Elemental Gimmick Gear caught me offguard as an enjoyable Zelda clone for the Dreamcast. It's a beautiful, non-tile based overhead adventure. The storyline is definately weird in a Japanese way, but the gameplay was good.

Oh! I remembered the other game. It's Light Crusader, by Treasure.

Okay, so nobody likes it but me. It's still getting mentioned!

Also surprised that nobody's mentioned Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia/Terranigma, or the Mana series (well, it was, but only briefly).

ditto.

Other SNES Zelda clones: Addams Family Values (surprisingly good), Young Merlin, Brandish (not for everyone! But I like it), Brain Lord, Twisted Tales of Spike McFang

You might consider Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves for NES. It also came out on Game Boy, but the black-and-white graphics are a true eyesore. You have a party including several characters from the movie and there is a good amount of strategy. You have to switch items among the party members or even drop them, since each character can only hold so much weight. You talk to people, fight enemies from three different views and collect items. For a movie tie-in, it is a very good adventure/rpg type game.
