No one can escape the wrath of PITFALL....

The days of a single joystick with a lone button may be long gone, but Activision is banking that the appeal of games that use simple controls isn't. The publisher today announced Activision Hits Remixed for the PlayStation Portable, a collection of the company's games from the days of the Atari 2600.

The compilation, due for release this fall, will include more than 40 Activision offerings from the classic console--games such as the vine-swinging, alligator-stomping, scorpion-jumping Pitfall! Also confirmed for the package will be Kaboom!, Chopper Command, Stampede, and Keystone Kapers.

Games that have a multiplayer mode will be playable by either taking turns on one PSP, playing games over the handheld's wireless capabilities, or competing in two-player matches over two PSPs with just one UMD disc using the game-sharing feature.

It's unclear how or if the games will be "Remixed," but Activision does say the collection will sport "modernized front-end graphics." Gamers can also look forward to a 1980s-themed soundtrack, classic game manuals, and several unlockables.

Awesome. I love the PSP retro-compilations. One of the best reasons to own a PSP.

"Modernized front end graphics?" Meh.

I don't see why Activision felt the need to "remix" these games instead of sticking to the "Activision Anthology" formula. Most of the time, these "remixed" games wind up looking like a cheapened experience in an attempt to appeal to the casual gamer (Super Mario All-Stars being a rare exception).

Also, it's hard to get excited about another compilation coming to the PSP. It seems like compilations, ports, and remakes are all that come out for that thing...

The remakes of Enduro, Pitfall, Mega Mania and River Raid this a is good idea.

The graphics enchanced likes Super Mario All Stars for Super NES became this old games more atracative for the game fans.

The old games revitalization are a good idea since well managed.

I think they just mean a modern-looking game selection screen, not remixed graphics.

Wow that's a sad thing to admit. I'm not saying that these compilations aren't fun but they're only a step above shovel-ware. In fact, how many consoles since the Genesis haven't had retro bundles released for it?

Besides, doesn't everyone who owns a PSP play emulators on it already?

Yeah but how many portable systems have been capable of playing accurate renditions of the classics on a gorgeous screen? That's new.

No, in fact I'd venture to the say the majority of PSP owners DON'T emulate (though the majority of DP PSP owners probably do). I don't emulate because it's a hassle, I like to play the brand new games, and I'm an adult with money and I can afford these retro compilations.

Bought it for $10 on Black Friday at Gamecrazy, but I'll have to try it out this weekend.
