I have been a fan of early ps1 japanese titles for quite some time. You know, stuff like Gunners Heaven, Hermie Hopperhead, Ridge Racer, Arc the Lad even DBZ UB22. Stuff that came out before Sony was king and before the 32-bit era was in full effect. Has anyone else felt this small segment of collecting before?

I have been searching and searching for a list of japanese ps1 games by date released, no luck. Maybe some kind person on DP has come across one and can tell me where to go.

Also, does anybody have good recomendations for great obscure 2d titles on ps1? Or just early games that were really good for the system.

If you haven't already you may want to check out the PSX Underground discs. Those usually had demos of Japanese games (IIRC some complete games too).

I know Philosoma was an early title, and I'm pretty sure it was a launch title in Japan (product code: SCPS-10009).

Fun quasi-3D shmup too. :)

Some early titles that I'm fond of include:
Gokujou Parodius Deluxe Pack
Ganbare Goemon: Uchuu Kaizoku Akogingu
Chou Aniki
Choro Q (Not 2d, but a fun racer, although 3 is the best in the series.)

Wasn't Crime Crackers one of the first PS1 games in Japan? It was like a doom type game, but with really cute characters.

I also like Hermie Hopperhead and Gunners Heaven. Too bad there isn't more games like that.
