I just got this game a little while ago and I am happy to say I'm enjoyint it a lot. It's a blast to play. I love how it never gets boring. There always seems to be a huge boss around the next corner or a different gameplay segment.
It also helps that the whole game has excellent level design. From the Kingdom to space to the Pig Ship. It all looks unique and very amazing.
The jet-pack adds a lot to the gameplay. I only wish there were more jet-pack levels. I love the vertical shooter segments in the game. I also wish there was some more challenging platforming segments. I always felt challenged from the bosses and such, but never from platforming.
Everything about this game is excellent. From the soundtrack, to gameplay, to graphics. So what do you think of Rocket Knight Adventures?

Love it. I loved it back in the day (ie, when it was a brand new Genesis game) and I still love it today. Top notch.

It's obvious that Konami put a lot of effort into it, but in my opinion it is just not very fun to play.

I thought the game was great the first time I played it but nothing made me pick it up again. I thought Sparkster was better.

A few of my friends finished up their DND of Rocket Knight after playing for a little over 3 years. I played for awhile but school and work schedules got in the way and I never seemed to be able to fit into their dynamic schedules after that.
The game is pretty cool and nice graphics. It's not the best platformer ever but beats the hell out of most. I think everyone that owns a Genesis should pick it up especially since its price isn't that high, matter of fact very cheap even complete. It does have its extreme hard parts, like the big bubble armed boss in the air ship with the screaming scientist that does a ton of damage, but just makes it more fun and challenging.

If you also own a Snes, you should definitively get Sparkster. Here's a review and screenshots from my review site:

The soundtrack in Rocket Knight Adventure is amazing.
Sparkster, whether on Genesis or SNES, sucks. 8-)

Funny... RKA was the first Genesis game I played when I re-purchased the system this past February. While I can see its quality, to be honest I didn't click with it like I hoped. I'll pop it in for another try though, thanks to this topic.

I couldn't disagree more. Sure, the Genesis Sparkster took the seiris in a different spin, and offered a useless diamond collecting powerup scheme, but the game still boasted clever level designs. RKA will always be my favorite, but Genesis Sparkster, while falling short of the original, was quite an enjoyable experience. I've yet to play the SNES Sparkster, but am hoping to one day come across a copy.

I couldn't disagree more. Sure, the Genesis Sparkster took the swordplay in a different spin (no more projectile sword beams...), and offered a useless diamond collecting powerup system, but the game still boasted clever level designs. RKA will always be my favorite, but Genesis Sparkster, while falling a little short of the original, was still quite an enjoyable experience. Just plugged in my copy of RKA for the Mega Drive (JPN), and hey, I'm not that hopeless after all. First set of five continues I didn't get too far, but on the second set I got a ways into area five. Very compelling title. I saw the Gradius reference, and I think I also saw Castlevania and Contra HC references (or was it Contra HC referring to RKA?) which was cool.
Definitely one of the best-looking titles Konami released for the system, and lots of fun to boot.

Decided to play this game on my newly Emulator happy Nintendo Wii... and man, I forgot how great it was. I ended up playing it from beginning to end and I wasn't even planning on it.
It's got that classic Konami "feel". The last level is amazing... but you have to be playing on the normal or higher difficulty to even see it.
When I owned this game as a kid, I NEVER was able to beat this game on Normal. It's quite a challenge. Seeing the ending after all these years was a joy.
I heard about the new remake coming to XBLA. I hope these do it justice... but this game was a beauty in 2D and still holds up well. The new 2.5 D perspective might muck things up.

I seem to remember there being talks of a RKA remake being made early last year.

Rocket Knight Adventures PSN/XBL 2.5d graphics look like crap. Hopefully they clean the graphics up and release a solid title.
But yeah. Rocket Knight Adventures is a great game. One of the better games on the Genesis. Sparkster for SNES is just as good. Sparkster on Genesis sucks.

^ Still strongly disagree three and a half years later. Sparkster for the Genesis brought an improved rocket system with open levels and more emphasis on platforming, and still contained a lot of cool boss fights. I still love RKA more though.

Rocket Knight is one of the best games ever made. Sadly everything that came after it couldn't even get close to it's greatness. (Two sequels and the silly XBL game)

It's one of my favourite games for the system, I really should play it more. I haven't really got too far into it yet.

Couldn't agree more. I got this game when it was on sale at walmart for 15.00 back when I was....I think 10 and It still blows me away. I spent so many late nights trying to beat the game but never did.

I'm going to have to give Sparkster on Genesis a shot. Never really got into it having rented it back in the day. I was expecting the game engine from RKA... so I think I was unable to cope with change.
I played the SNES version (which plays more like the first RKA) and was unimpressed by it's lack of "character". To me, it was boring and felt more like a watered down version of RKA.
