Three cheers for that awesome, awesome site. I haven't been so fond of a gaming review site since TotalRPG. The depth and breadth of the coverage combined with the elegantly simple layout is something to behold. If you haven't seen it yet, you should!

Yeah, absolutely great site.

I really like the overviews of entire game series. The articles on the FinalFight, Last Blade and King of Fighters series are well worth reading.

Plus it's nice to see some more obscure individuals games getting a proper review. I actually want to play Psychonauts on the Xbox now!

So yeah. Excellent site.

Well look at that. It answered a few of the DOA questions I had. Bad ass!

I'm going to have to check out the King of Fighters section.

Very handy site - use it to read up on my favourite series and also find interesting new games to look for. Love all the pics too!

I'm glad that someone posted the site on here... it's a very useful resource. Not the flashiest site, but it has it where it counts- a ton of info and, importantly, screenshots. Finally, all my questions about the Goemon series were answered!! From the same guy who did the Castlevania Dungeon if I remember correctly. It's highly recommended.

Nice site, slowly growing in size of game coverage, needs a Gradius article to compliment the Parodius article. LOL

My only qualm is that the grammar can get a little clumsy at times, compared to other sites. (Or maybe the writing is so compelling I just notice it more...?)

I believe Kurt mentioned to me that it WILL definitely happen, just not in the near future. Understandable as there's a lot of ground to cover (almost as much as the Megami Tensei series or Dragon Slayer) when you take the ports into account.

Interesting idea. I already picked up a few inaccuracies and misleading info just through skimming. I'll have to read the entire site and make a list in the future.

I don't know what the goal of the site is, but if it's purely to educate newer HC gamers I'd suggest some fact checking.

I got to reading it quite a bit yesterday and like how it takes a game series and keeps track of every system each game in the series was on. I read the Final Fight and Langrisser articles specifically.

I knew Final Fight for the SNES was missing a bunch of stuff from the Arcade version, but a whole factory stage!? O_O Lame.

And Langrisser rules so much. I wish they would localize the sequels. :(

The goal of the site is to give gamers a general overview of franchises that aren't very well known in the western hemisphere and/or are no longer popular as they once were. It's not at all meant to be a be-all-end-all resource of information for the games.

Finally, all my questions about the Goemon series were answered!

That was quite an interesting read as well as a mate of mine wrote a feature on every Goemon game just over a year ago that was due to go in Retro Gamer. Live went down the pan, and it ended up on Retro Survival (http://www.retrosurvival.co.uk) instead, so you could always have a gandar at that if the price seems right ;)

He really did sweat doing it tbh, and it's a damn fine read. I should know, I had to lay out the thing for the project LOL

HCG have more pictures though, love the piccies :)

I want to eventually do articles on Dark Half and Dark Law: Meaning of Death. I love me some impot SNES. Right now I'm working on some Taito/Toaplan content. Trying to decide whether to finish an article off as just being about Outzone and FixEight or to hold off and make a Toaplan uber-article along the lines of the King of Fighters and Megami Tensei pieces.

Well I've scanned the net capturing pics of different Gradius games, and I could always take pics from emulators for Gradius if Kurt ever needs them for such an article, though an X-1 Gradius would be hard to get screenshots from, but the PC8801 version I can print screen one in case he ever needs a pic from that particular version (emulation is such a sweet thing for such an obscure system).

If you've got stuff to contribute (or even if you want to do an entire article yourself) just contact him via email or in one of the forum threads. He's pretty open about contributions given that the point of the site is to get people interested in these franchises again. :D

Heh, whenever it does get off the ground I'll dig up my old comic collection. I have ads for US GB Gradius when it was still going to be released here under the Nemesis name like in Europe.

Any of the stuff in my own articles I try to verify firsthand. I do make mistakes though, so feel free to send over any misinformation and I'll see about correcting it. There's already little bits and pieces of stuff that I think of months after posting something and never get around to fixing them.

As for Gradius - like a year ago, Carlo (who wrote the Turrican, Twinbee and Xevious articles) wanted to contribute to one. Apparently there's a TON of backstory, mostly from the MSX games, that really isn't explored elsewhere. Alas, it never got anywhere. I'd definitely be into it, someday...

I wasn't trying to cause harm with that statement so please don't take it as such.

I'm just a little weary of anything labeled "Hardcore Gaming, Gamer, Games, etc."

Trying to appeal to hardcore gamers is great. There should be more people doing this. There's only been one organization that's been successful at it and they're long gone.

For what it's worth, keep it up!

Oh, I don't take offense. Admittedly I'm not much a fan of the name either, due to the negative stigma attached to it. But...I'm not much with names, so...

But yeah, I guess this is my first set up posts here, so...sup all and whatnot. I've visited the store plenty of times but this is my first time posting.

The name sort of irks me too, I sort of expected a site about Halo mods or something, but it turns out to be a terrific site. If they ever do a Gradius one, I'd be happy to contribute box scans of Nemesis '90 and Gradius II for the X68000 and Gradius for the X1.

The information on Thunder Force I is a little inaccurate, though. I've never seen any proof of a PC-98 version (which doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but there's no mention of it on the internet or any screen/box shots), and it excludes the IBM PC-JX version.

eh, to me the name doesn't bug me at all. I love the Wolfenstein corridor shot/banner though... that's beautiful. Anyway I signed up there recently (same name)... it is a very small community thus far, but that's OK. It is a niche type of website, so maybe it's only fitting.

Still, corrections concerning false information should be accepted with open arms. Besides, RCM himself might be the one in the wrong--as I know Kurt goes to extensive lengths to ensure every article meets his high standards of quality. My advice would be to post on their boards and see how it flies. They've got a special forum for article discussion.

Anyway, anyone who doesn't love HG101 probably hasn't visited it yet.

That's because you're looking for it as Thunder Force or Thunder Force I when only Thunder Force Construction itself got a real PC-98 release. As far as I know there's no standalone Thunder Force I for the PC-98, just that Thunder Force Construction.

There's a lot of spurious information out there about Thunder Force. Lots of sites still claim there's an MSX version, for instance. I've confirmed (meaning I own it or have seen box art or screenshots) of Thunder Force Construction set for the X1 Turbo, FM-77AV, PC-6601, PC-8801mk2, IBM JX, and MZ-1500, but I've never seen box art or screenshots of a PC-98 version. Essentially, every version of TF 1 on tape is just TF 1, and every version on floppy is the construction set.

On the other hand, there's absolutely no information on the internet whatsoever, in Japanese or English, that the IBM JX version exists. I only happen to know it exists because I own it. Most english web pages out there with any TF 1 information are based off of research me and another fellow at Shmups.com did (before that common wisdom was that it came out on the X1 and MSX), but I don't know where the so-called PC-98 version came from.

It's a great little site. I got it linked on my site, and I'm very picky about what I link to. The approach is very similar to how I go about my own reviews and site work and such - that is, provide solid English information on games that often have next to no coverage in English online. I couldn't even start to describe just how much I've learned from the site. Heck, I've used the TwinBee article practically as a buyer's guide. My favorite articles are the ones about Japanese imports, but I've slowly been chipping away at the site trying to read everything on it. Even when a game doesn't interest me much, Kurt's writing is always quite witty and amusing. :) I love the outpouring of hate for the Bubsy series, haha.

Here's an example where Mr. RCM is in the right, from HCG101:

Shinobi 3: Return of the Ninja Master/The Super Shinobi 2 (1994) - Genesis

Shinobi 3 was released in 1993. I'll refrain from making a list of false facts off the site...I'm a busy man! I'm a writer and for what it's worth I get shit wrong sometimes too!
