I was playing my trusty N-Gage last night (loaded with emulators and such) and I happened upon a game for the Japanese Game Gear called Griffin. I'd never heard of it before and it turned out to be a fun (tough) tank shooter. There's not a whole lot of info out there about quite a few Japan-only GG games. Any experts in here?

How many shooters made it to the Game Gear? I've tried to compile (Compile... hahaha) them into a list by genre. What am I missing? I am mainly interested in the "pure shmups"

Pure Shmups

Aerial Assault
Drop Zone (more Defender clone than shmup?)
Fantasy Zone
Galaga ’91 (doesn't this contain scrolling elements?)
GG Aleste
GG Aleste II (best graphics on GG/SMS?)
Griffin
Halley Wars
Power Strike II

Pseudo 3-D Shmups

Panzer Dragoon Mini
G-LOC Air Battle
Space Harrier
Faceball 2000 (FPS)
Super Battle Tank

Not shmups but pretty shmuppy

Gunstar Heroes
Smash TV
Arcade Classics (Centipede, Missile Command)

Power Strike II and GG Aleste II for the Game Gear are the same exact game with a different title screen, but I'm pretty sure you already knew that.

Still going crazy looking for a complete copy of the original GG Aleste. It really sucks how unavailable it is considering how great it is.

I always loved the Game Gear but am not too familiar with a lot of the titles available on it. Most of the games I find locally are just loose, most don't have cartridge cases, price a bit above their average (but not by much; not worth it without cases though), and a ton of repeats everywhere and it's difficult to really collect a decent amount. I'm somewhere in the lower 20's of games for it and enjoy most of them and wasn't aware of any shoot-'em-ups or of the such.

So, with that said, how common are any of them and are most of them Japanese and not released over here? If so then that'd explain quite a bit about what I've seen in the wild. I don't really look on eBay for Game Gear games but that may be what I resort to later down the road if I don't get anywhere with what I have now.

Don't mean to go OT but real quickly: I sold my GG and several games this past year... after owning it for 12! I remember getting my dad to buy it brand new in 1994 for me... kept it all those damn years.

In Feb. 2006 I raided a Game Crazy walked away with 15 GG games for 30 bucks (no joke).

But I realized I just didn't like playing it any more.

On a side note, if you haven't played it yet, check out VAMPIRE. It's similar to Castlevania. Awesome game.

I was never a big GG fan until I played it on the N-Gage... no more huge "handheld" to cart around, no more appauling battery life, no more carts to lose. I have over 100 original carts at home but I NEVER play them and I never break out the GG. The N-Gage (or Tapwave, or Gizmondo, or GP32, or PSP, or whatever) all feature fine screen resolution and great GG/SMS emulation coupled with better battery life in much smaller packages. I can finally appreciate the Game Gear after all these years (and play some SMS while I'm at it.)

Devilish is sort of a shooter...It's like half breakout/pong, half shooter, since it's always scrolling and you take out enemies and such with the ball. Pretty good game. Unique, for sure, but I've always considered it a shooter.

Aerial Assault is my favorite GG game of all time! Sure it's easy...but it's fun!

I hate dragging out the gamegear just to find my defender of oaiss and shining force save files have long since expired.

I use SMS Plus S60. Find it here...

http://ngage.dcemu.co.uk/smspluss60.shtml

It runs nearly all GG and SMS games perfectly on the N-Gage with full sound and no slowdown. I have not seen any glitching except for Panzer Dragoon Mini (which doesn't seem to run correctly in most emulators.) There are a few games it won't run at all... seems to be the larger games like Virtua Fighter Animation. No big loss.

All these shooters work great, as does Shining Force, Gunstar Heroes, all the Master System games including Phantasy Star (good luck reading that text, though) and my all-time favorite, Gin. I swear I've spent hundreds of hours with that damn game. Some of the Master System shooters are hard to play just because the bullets are so damn small.

The N-Gage screen is smaller that the one on the Game Gear but its resolution is infinitely better and much brighter. I could never go back to the GG after the N-Gage.

Whoa, a Telnet Shmup for the Game Gear! I'm actually kinda surprised. What was their relationship with Sega, anyhow?

Also, I did try out Panzer Dragoon Mini, didn't see the appeal of it. Seems slightly better than G-Loc though!

None to speak of. They were an independent developer, mostly developing for personal computers and CD systems.
