can someone please help me get started using mame, I'm really trying to get this thing going but so far my efforts have been to no avail.
I don't understand what to use and how to use roms with mame. please if someone has time can you help

It depends on which version of MAME you use. If you use the MAME32 then all you do is put the roms in the roms folder and double click on MAME32.exe and a GUI should pop up. Then you can select the rom you have. If you use the Command Line version then you go to the DOS prompt (Start --> Run and type in cmd). Then go to the DIR where you installed MAME at. i.e. cd mame. Then type mame romname and when the game starts you can configure your controls by pressing the tab key.
