Greetings people, I have been following a discussion on Amiga.org about some people/person that claims to have found a way to remove the ugly yellowing that happens to Amigas and many other plastic based components.. like Super Nintendos etc?

http://www.amiga.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?viewmode=flat&topic_id=33027&forum=8

So far the discussion has circled around this person who did:

Re: You CAN unyellow an Amiga

1) Soaked it in ammonia for 1 hour
2) Soaked it in bleach for 2 weeks
3) Ran it through the dishwasher

On the site people are trying out his method and the usual bunch of supporters/cynics are chiming in as well...

In any case I am finding it to be an interesting discussion and one others may find equally as interesting since we all collect consoles and have been battling this problem for quite some time now.

I thought it might be a good link to post to some of the folk here as well in case they wish to follow the developments as well.

Is there anyone here that can vouch one way or another about this method or has tried it?

Well the yellowing is from bad plastic and it goes through the whole plastic it's not just on the surface.

So soaking in bleach "could" bleach the plastic back white. Maybe.......

Bleach and ammonia also makes plastic brittle, so use at your own risk.

Yes, the yellowing is caused by the impurities in certain plastic batches before being added the injection molding process.

There is no way to get rid of it. You can disassemble, clean, prime, then use some Krylon to color match the SNES.

You could also spray it the color of your choice. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Good Luck.

they do make a type of dye like a spray paint for these types of plastics

its called Vinyl, Plastic & Carpet dye. it does go on like a paint, its hard to screw up and it really doe dye it, it kinda sotens the outer layers of the plastic slightly how ever it does harden back up and there is a paint like texture to it but unlike spray paint it doesent bulid up in layers...i did i test if it really is a dye and once you get through the small ammount of bulid up it does acually stain the plastic.

BE WARNED
no all cans of vynil dye are what they say they are...
i use some stuff from a company called Hi-Tech that i buy off a detail truck and have used it on many abs plastics

Krylon Fusion is not a vinyl dye

The bleaching method was discussed here a while back and great results were reported for PC Engine & Duo systems (I did my PCE and it worked a treat)i, but it seemed there was crap-all effect on yellowed SNES's.
