View Full Version : What the hell happened to Vigilante 8?

Am I the only one who loved this game?
I've been working on my N64 collection and realized that I was missing the original Vigilante 8. I haven't played the sequel (2nd Offense) that much as I think the original is superior.
I bought a copy off Ebay and got it yesterday. I plugged it into my N64 to test it out and ended up playing the damn thing for several hours. This is a fun game! I forgot how much I like it. Sure, it's a blatant rip-off of Twisted Metal but it's a damned fine rip-off. I was not a big fan of Star Wars: Demolition (basically V8 running off the same graphics engine but featuring characters from Star Wars along with fairly shitty levels.)
The first two games sold quite well on the PSone and the N64 version of the first V8 sold well enough to get the sequel ported over AND the Dreamcast got a port of V82... yet there's never been another game in the series past the Dreamcast. Twisted Metal got revived for the PS2 and PSP so why did V8 die?
While I’m at it… both V8 games look like shit on the N64. The reviews I’ve read say both games were superior to the PSone games and the V82 was close to the Dreamcast game in terms of graphics. I’m playing both games through a Gameshark… could that be why they look so bad or am I just seriously spoiled?

I don't know about the through the gameshark thing, but I seem to remember thinking 2nd Offence on the N64 looked EXCELLENT, but that was when I was a kid and was impressed by the 64. I'm pretty sure it used the expansion cart, so it helped out a little bit.

Nah, they just don't look as good as you remember.
I remember being disappointed when they announced that the Interstate 76 console port was getting dumbed down into a Twisted Metal style game, but then when I finally played it I really dug it. Great stuff.

I played the PSOne version to death and loved it. Absolutely loved it. I picked up the n64 version and hated it. The graphics were decent, but the control and music just really sucked.
I've got the DC version of 2nd offence. I've played it a few times but never really got into it. It seems to lack the magic of the first one of the PSX :D

N00B! get a Rez Pack :smash:
man, I LOVED Vigilante 8. I guess it was just too much like twisted metal to have more than one sequel.
LONG LIVE THE 'DDDDDDDDDDDDDD'!!!

I've GOT a rez pack (I assume you mean the ram upgrade?) You can't play Zelda MM without it.
Maybe it's the Gameshark or maybe my connections are cruddy or something... I remember these games looking way better. I'll try it sans Gameshark and check the cables.

Did you know the game engine was used in Star Wars: Demolition?
I think.
It might've been Critical Depth, actually.

I'm weird, because I hate this game. I tried V8 Second Offense on the DC and couldn't even land a hit on the enemy.
Then again, I can't drive! LOL

Vigilante 8 on the N64 is still my favourite vehicular combat game of all time.
I have the sequel on DC, and it's AWFUL. The addition of flight was cool, but it was so glitchy - the game felt like an unfinished beta. So many collision detection issues, weapons not working properly, dodgy AI, often insane physics.
2nd Offense is terrible on the DC so I couldn't bear to imagine how much worse the PSX and N64 versions are.

I like both Twisted Metal and Vigilante 8, but I like Vigilante 8 better actually. I didn't play Second Offense as much because my favorite character turned into the main bad guy in it. Slick Clyde I think his name was...?
And yeah, the PSOne versions are better then the N64 versions. Someone needs to make a third game, badly.

When they were new, I had all of the Twisted Metals and V8s, and we always played Twisted Metal multiplayer/co-op. I always found TM to be a better game overall, especially multiplayer. It's one of the rare instances where I prefered the Sony version over the Nintendo equivalent.

I remember plaing the PSX one and liking it. It does need another installment though, maybe something in HD, 5.1 on the 360 perhaps, so we can really hear and see the cars and enviorments being ripped apart

Hmmm... it seems the N64 games ARE as nice-looking as I remember.
I believe the problem is my GameShark. The pause screen normally has an option to switch to high-res mode but the option disappeared with the GameShark in place. Weird. There is a Gameshark cheat for "Super Hi Res" but it looked worse than the normal resolution.
GameSharks can be cool but they can also be glitchy as hell.

The frist V8 was fun, and I too played it on the playstation. The second one lost something somwhere, I just could not put my finger on it. The N64 version are ok, it is just that darn control scheme. It was difficult for me to get used to. As for the graphics, the N64 does not age well, and as a rule of thumb...we always think of a game having better graphics than it does now.

I remember reading back in the day that some of the developers who created Twisted Metal 1 & 2 created another company which developed the Vigilante 8 series. That's why they were so similiar. Can anyone confirm this? Luckily the development team behind Twisted Metal 3 & 4 were not allowed to do anything ever again LOL

Close, but no cigar.
SingleTrac did the first two TM games for Sony (along with Warhawk and a couple of JetMotos.) SingleTrac then went on to work for GT Interactive on two games using the TM engine... Critical Depth (TM underwater... I don't care for it) and Rogue Trip (fantastic yet underrated TM clone, again using the TM engine.)
Sony did TM 3 & 4 in-house with 989 Studios. They do indeed suck (comparitively, anyway.)
Some former SingleTrac employees formed Incognito and were hired by Sony to do Twisted Metal Black on the PS2 and Head-On for the PSP. Hooray! They also did TM: Small Brawl on the PSone. Boo!

Luxoflux did the Star Wars Demoliton after this 2nd offense. I really tried it, but it´s no fun like Vigilante 8.
And I also think that the first game on PS it´s more enjoyable than the others

I remember playing the DC version. It seemed like fun but I didn't like it. I've enjoyed the Carmageddon series more.

I think that Europeans appreciate the Carmageddon series more those us in the USA... the only game in the series that appeared on any home console was the appalling Carmageddon 64 for the N64. I don't know anyone who has played the PC versions (although I don't normally run up to people and ask them if they have ever played a Carmageddon game.) The first time I ever paid it any attention was when I devoted several hours to playing the unfinished version for the Gizmondo handheld... not quite the same I'd imagine. Then there's the version for the GBC... ick.
Didn't you guys get a couple of games on the PSone?

I thought this was just a knockoff of Interstate 76.
There was a stupid awful redundant port to the GBC as well, I seem to recall.
