View Full Version : are xbox 360s STILL

is anyone here STILL getting 360s that are freezing up on them and giving them the 3 red lights of death and chaos? I've had mine since last November and it JUST died on me. I want to know if anyone else has had thier system work since around launch time and is having thier systems die on them too. I went to the official Xbox forums and there are plenty of people still having thier systems die on them. Not only that, but the big kick in the ass is M$ is charging $140 for every system they need to fix. In addition, people are getting thier "fixed systems" back just to have them mess up again with the same problems. A whole bunch of people are claiming that Dead Rising and Saints Row are killing thier systems, but I don't think its those games fault at all, lots of people have claimed system failure around Aug. 29th give or take a week. Has this happened to anybody else at all recently?

Even though I posted extensively in your other thread, I'm just chiming in to say that I had a launch system, and it died on me in early/mid August.
And mine did not receive a lot of play, at least not as much as most folks.

Well...thank god I haven't had any 360 problems.
I'm convinced that the only reason why has something to with the fact I haven't bought one yet.
Seriously though, I've heard that also about Dead Rising and Saint's Row. Basically the game is just pushing the system more than others, making the processor work harder, causing more heat...
Seen alot on the net, and had one guy I actually know have it happen. More than a few of my friends want to play Dead Rising badly but won't because they are afraid of what will happen. How sad is that? You have to pick and choose what game to play or risk screwing up your system? Bleh...

I honestly don't think it has anything to do with dead rising or saints row at all. I think it may have something to do with either A) a poorly made system or B) something that is downloadable on xbox live market place. I have dead rising and didn't run into problems with that game or the system. It wasn't until after I took Dead Rising out to play other games (like my last thread about Oblivion) that I started having problems with the system. The most trouble I've had with the system was trying to play a game and download something at the same time. tried playing Oblivion and download the Just Cause demo...thats when it started. Called the 1800-4my-xbox number and they told me to do all this unplugging or cables and hard drives and that got the system working for a few days, then tried downloading another thing on the marketplace while playing Enchanted Arms, and then the system froze and now I can't play it for more than 10 minutes without it dying on me. So the only pattern I've noticed (besides the checkerboard pattern that comes up on my screen when it freezes now) is that each time I downloaded a large file and played a game at the same time killed it even more. But I'm still leaning more towards the 360s being built to break so that M$ can cash in on us.

That's a bit of an exaggeration...not everyone has to pay $140. Not to beat a dead horse here, but the MS extended warranty is $59.90 and covers 2 years (+ 90 days).
My original 360 was purchased in February, crashed in July. Received it back in August and have had no problems since (we'll see what the future holds). I've also played Dead Rising quite a bit and never noticed a problem.

oops, i did forget to mention that without a warrenty, thats how much it costs to get fixed. But in some articles I've read, MS has said that 5% of the systems had to be fixed or replaced, but I'm starting to think that if they re-tally those numbers, it would lead to be a hell of a lot more than that, as to how much I'm not quite sure. I guess i'm just feeling like I'm being screwed by them and when I see that so many others have had thier systems break, it just makes me a bit more frustrated because its almost as if MS has some money making tricks up thier sleeves that some people may not even realize. Its almost as if the xbox 360 is like owning an American muscle car. It's nice to own and performs well, but hope that you've got some money set aside because it will cost you.
This is why you get the 2 year 50$ warrenty.
Why not?
I myself had ONE crash and it killed my 360, but they took it back NO QUESTIONS ASKED.
My new one hasn't done ONE thing.
I also bought the 2 year after my original warrenty expired, I feel so much better now :)

I also had problems when I got dead rising, my system would shut down and I had the three blinking lights. I also had the intercooler attached but when I removed the intercooler it has not happened since also had no problems with my system at all it is still off my system and it is working fine.

No problems with mine (yet), and I've played both Saint's Row and Dead Rising pretty extensively. However, a coworker is currently on his *fourth* system -- a combination of placing the system in a location with poor airflow, and playing 'problematic' games like Chromehounds seems to be the cause of his problems.

My system froze up once on me with Dead Rising. A few times with Chromehounds, but that was more network/dashboad issues than in-game stuff. Not that it matters, but I have the intercooler.
I haven't had any hard drive or similarly serious crashing problems. It's only a matter of time. One year, three, seventeen. Who knows?

Not sure if that will work, funny that you post this though. My refurbished 360 is in the "shop" right now. It cost me $96 to get it repaired, was $125 but they knocked some off. I was just outside warranty when mine died. Worked fine then one day stuck COA2 back in, downloaded latest patch then freeze then blam 3 rings.

I think thats a bunch of bullshit. When I buy something brand new I expect it to last longer than a couple of months. I guess I am just crazy like that. HAVING to buy a warranty because you know the 360 is going to take a shit is complete crap.

Well in Australia the failure rate on the launch consoles was
close to a whopping 50% well above the 5% threshold for
consumer electronics in this country, Infact as a store manager
that was around for the PS2 launch I can honestly say that the
360 problem rate pisses all over the PS2 rate, that my friends
is saying something!
And MS are such a pain in the ass as a retailer too, If you buy
a sony product from me and within 30 days it dies I just give
you a new one and Sony sends me a new console, no hastle at all.
Ms on the other hand requires the customer to contact them and
make sure they are not a dumb shit and they are pressing the right
buttons, then they give them an RA number, the customer
must then take the console back to place of purchase,
after that the retailer then must contact MS and go through the
exact same BS the customer went through, after that then
we have to contact our MS distribution people and ask for a
Return Authorisation and WAIT till they send me a new console
to replace the damaged one.
Biggest load of BS ever, well maybe only second to Nintedo's
return policy here in Australia, another story for another time.
Its funny though after talking to reps and other retailers here
in Aus, most of them are going to push PS3 more for the simple
fact they are easier to deal with as a company here, I mean WTF?
this is sony, they might not offer much customer support but
it still beats the competition LOL LOL LOL
I got my 360 on launch day at Best Buy. Still have it, but I had problems with Perfect Dark Zero and Chrome Hounds, where random polygons would show up white and unshaded instead of rendering correctly.
I decided to give the Nyko Intercooler a try to see if my 'box was overheating. The darn thing actually worked, dropping the temperature in my 360's entertainment center noticeably and causing Chrome Hounds to play correctly. It adds another couple of decibels over the 360's roar with another 3 fans, but since it's in my entertainment center I can shut the door on it and block out the sound (the back of the center is open for ventilation).
This is why you get the 2 year 50$ warrenty.

So do you cry when you go buy a car? They kind of force you into warrenty. You pay for it, would you really reject it?
Heck, cell phones have warrenties, are you going to risk your "free on a 3 year plan, but regular price 300$ and if you break it tough shit" phone?
Seriously man, get a grip, shit breaks, thats life, and for 50 bucks to ease my mind of having to fork more over for a repair is far better then wasting my time. Everything breaks, it's up to you to compare the value of the warrenty to the product.
A coffee maker is not worth bothering with.
A 500$ machine is.
It's 50 freaking bucks, I spend more on marketplace points.
My 360 lasted 8 months, shit happens, they fixed it right away, and thats why I bought the warrenty.
If you're cheap, don't buy a 500$ machine, but lets face it, 50$ is NOTHING compared to the purchase of the machine and a game.

Yes as a matter of fact I did cry last time I bought a car. Thanks for asking. No I do not buy a warranty for every damn thing I buy cause thats bullshit. Looks like the warranty is only $40, at least according to this PDF on MS's site:
http://www.xbox.com/NR/rdonlyres/0DF5D799-83CA-4869-814D-6A914A8B4CC8/0/ExtWarrantyInvoice.pdf
I'd assume they'd have to honor that price since it's still on their main site and is in fact linked directly from the page dealing with the extended warranty.

I think we can safely say that while the premise behind Microsoft's 360 extended warranty is pathetic (the damn thing should last more than a few months)...at this point only a fool would not buy the extended warranty.
Then again only masochists or the rich should be buying these half-assed 360's in the first place.

I've had my 360 since launch day, and there was a point last December when I thought it might die on me. I had a couple of lock-ups on it, but the problem just seemed to go away. I can't remember the last time anything abnormal happened. (knock on wood). Maybe I just got lucky or something.
Regarding the Warranty, I filled out the card and sent a check, but for the longest time, I don't think Microsoft ever cashed that check, and I honestly wonder if I even have the Warranty or not. I've never been sent any materials from them either. I guess I need to call that 1-800 -4myxbox thing and check. Also, I bought my system at Costco, and Costco has an incredible return policy, possibly the best in the World. Some say you can return products years after purchasing them there. Apparently, Costco has agreements with companies that they will take back defective products, regardless of when it was originally purchased. I guess Costco just does such huge volume that companies grudgingly deal with the returns that come down the pipe.
I know this, I would prefer to buy all my systems and other expensive electronics from Costco in the future, because of their great return policy. It's worth it to even pay as much as a 10 percent or 20 percent markup, just to get that peace of mind. Normally Costco has a great deal on stuff too, but not always.

Its very sad that people now expect their new consoles to fail on them. Youd think microsoft would have learned their mistake from last time, the original xbox also had a huge failure rate at first.
Its not worth buying a console on launch since the hardware is unproven over any length of time, plus theres no good games. However when it comes to nintendo, im happy to buy on laucnh and hopefull will buy a wii when its released. They build their hardware to last, when i worked in a game shop i never saw a broken gamecube, but we had faulty ps2 all the time, and a good deal of faulty xbox machines too.

MP3 players, and anything without moving parts I don't bother with, such as a monitor, or a whole PC, with the exeption of the HD and fans, nothing moves really, and HD's are cheap, so are fans.

I agree a 400+ plus system should last longer than a couple of months. So they offer extended warrantys for 60.00. Alot of people after dropping a wad for the system and the game just don't have an extra sixty to fork over within the limited time frame. Calling someone cheap is totally out of line.
I think they should honor the systems for the first year. It is true that you have to clear out the smoke to find the truth. I think that alot of the complaints are valid and Ms should make an exception sorta of the way ps2 did in the lens incident.

Things break but when there is a pattern of things that break the companies address it. Automobile do recalls. Why can't Ms.
One more thing. The alot complaints seem to come from people that heavily use the system and enjoy gaming.
What about the people that seldom play their 360. There numbers have yet to be thrown in. What happens when they decide to heavily play? I believ the numbers will increase.
I think thats a bunch of bullshit. When I buy something brand new I expect it to last longer than a couple of months. I guess I am just crazy like that. HAVING to buy a warranty because you know the 360 is going to take a shit is complete crap.
So I guess I am crazy for expecting something that costs $500 to actually work and last a while and I do not need to get a grip on anything. I know shit breaks but it usually lasts a couple of years before it does. If your stupid enough to spend $500 on something you know is going to break quickly and then spend extra money on a warranty than you are really stupid. Dont like what I say than kiss my ass.
It's not that I don't like what you say, but the manner you say it, grow up little baby, people might entertain your opinion and not look down on you so much, I love how the internet makes everyone so tough with their opinions, instead of talking things out like an adult.
I don't expect my expensive toys to break, but it's nice to have a warrenty, factory or not, and stupid or not, I have far more to worry about then 50 piss $ that'll ease one thing off my mind.
Funny thing though, I can't WAIT to see how the PS3 fares, its 100% new hardware (re: no DVD rom, blu-ray.) are you buying it?
Have fun jumping with no paracute if you are!
The thing is about the warrenty, I warrenty ANY DISC BASED SYSTEM, because all lasers FAIL, and non of them are bulletproof. If the 360 was a cart system I wouldn't warrenty it, just an example, so don't think I expect the 360 itself to fail, oh no, it's the DVD drive, and all other optical drives I expect to fail.
MP3 players, and anything without moving parts I don't bother with, such as a monitor, or a whole PC, with the exeption of the HD and fans, nothing moves really, and HD's are cheap, so are fans.
a whole freaking 360, or ps3, or any other optical device that costs over 100$ is kind of worth it to me, but thats just me.
I agree a 400+ plus system should last longer than a couple of months. So they offer extended warrantys for 60.00. Alot of people after dropping a wad for the system and the game just don't have an extra sixty to fork over within the limited time frame. Calling someone cheap is totally out of line.

So calling someone cheap, as opposed to stupid as he did is out of line?
Great logic buddy. You missed the whole point. I warrenty ANY OPTICAL BASED SYSTEM, or expensive part ect with moving parts. My whole argument was not for JUST THE 360. Sure, systems should last a year, or forever. My choice is to spend 50$ to back up a 500$ "investment" in my entertainment, if you don't think it's worth it, no worries, don't get it!
You need to get your facts straight, the failure rate was well below the industry standard for your "recall"
. The internet blows things WAY out of league, you might think a lot of complaints are valid, but don't bother parading until you have experienced it first hand.
Again, I am repeating this: DO NOT MAKE A CHOICE UNTIL YOU PHONE THEM.
Chances are they'll redeem themselves and you'll find out you were worried over nothing.

Well you can call it way out of proportion I call it facts from what I see first hand. personally know of six people that picked up a launch system of the six 2 had to send there 360's back.
Not counting the guy at dp hear that won the 7up contest 360 that broke.
These are from people that take care of thier systems. Yeah the internet blows things out of proportion but the fact is the 360 produces a whole lot of heat the cooling system is inadequate for the heat it puts out. Heat kills electronic componets that is why server rooms have to maintain a certian temp. The 360 is hot to the touch.
I am so glad I got the intercooler.
All I'm saying is that the warranty period should be a year for those who bought the system at launch.
And I still say not everyone had an extra sixty to put down on a warranty. people are buying system games xbox live service. I didn't even find out about the warranty until I got home and opened the 360. Nothing on the box said an extended warranty was inside. I would be mad if i would have bought a lame store warranty and then found that inside.
The older I get the more I don't tolerate being told to deal with it. If I am paying good money I expect good service and goods. If my food is served bad I send it back if something breaks before warranty I send it back. As a buyer I have certain expectations of quality from a service provider and I will stand by it.

Forget the manufacturer's extended warranty, get it from the retailer- then when it dies you drive to the store and back and you've got a new system in an hour :)
Yeah, warrantying any optical system is usually a fair bet. Unless it's a Nintendo system hehe. Then it's a waste of money ;P
Some warranties even let you get rid of a perfectly good, but used, system at the end of it and get a brand new one. EB's always worked like that.

Has anyone here actually wondered why the Wii is the smallest console of the three next gen systems, and why the 360 and PS3 are just huge in comparison? Anyone ever wonder why Nintendo is going to be the company which will be losing the least money per console, or perhaps even making a profit from day one? Or even why the Wii will be the cheapest of the three, yet still manage to deliver 2-3 times the graphical quality of Resident Evil 4?
Its called optimization. Making the most of what you've got, rather than mindlessly adding more powerful components just to get those few extra polygons on screen. This is a huge factor that can (quite literally) make or break a product. Unlike Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony seem to be just throwing hardware components together until they achieve the highest possible performance combined with relative stability (and by stability, I obviously mean "work for a few weeks without breaking down"). I mean, just look at the ridiculously high failure rates of the 360 (up to 50 fucking percent in some areas???), and how their consoles seem to be suffering from overheating problems. I've actually heard people say they are afraid to play Dead Rising because it might mess up their system. Seriously, am I the only one who sees a huge issue here? It's as if Microsoft are putting together poorly overclocked PCs and selling them in a fancy loungeroom package...oh wait...
The bottom line is this: you might think that the $50 you pay for an XBOX 360 warranty is actually money well spent, but in reality you're just paying $50 for Microsoft's incompetence to deliver a quality product.
I'm going to be paying only around $200 to get a Wii, and its probably going to last me a good several years at the very least. Hell, even if it breaks down, I know I can take it back to Nintendo and probably get a brand new one for free, no questions asked. That, my friends, is what I call value for money. 360 owners (and probably PS3 owners in a few months) are quite simply being ripped off with all this "extended warrantee\pay us to fix our already broken hardware" bullshit.

Are all these people you know in real life?
Because out of the 12 guys I employee who bought it at launch, 1 had to send it back... me.
The rest of them are still playing it, on the internet, it seems like everyone is sending them back or bitching about one thing or another.
The 360 is warm yes, but you do NOT need an intercooler. If the system overheats, something is wrong. They left a foil cover on the heatsink on the CPU in manufacturing, thats why it will overheat, but I'm sure you knew this because you checked around before assuming they are all crap for no reason correct?
Yes, I agree a system should last at least a year, heck 2 years! But think of it this way, Microsoft is losing money on it's console when it sells one as it is!
Just make sure you don't agree or disagree with your buddies about the quality of microsoft service until yours dies and you PHONE THEM, and find out for yourself.
What I'm arguing about is not the fact weather or not a system should last. That's black and white.
I am arguing about the fact that everyone assumes that just because 3% of it's released systems were a screw up that microsoft won't back it up, when that's totally wrong, I called them and they returned mine, I WAS OUT OF WARRENTY.
Thats the thing about the internet, everyones a freaking yes man, once a problem with a company occurs people just jump in without thinking or even having experience in it, just jump on the bandwagon.
I guess it's cool the warrenty is for 2 years... it's a sad thing I need to buy a warrenty to feel safe, but hey, they have already replaced my system and it was GREAT service, so why not invest in more of that service.
I am buying a Wii as well, and probably checking to see what a warrenty will set me back.

Arent you entitled to get a new machine if its get broken within a year or so, or do you have to pay the $60 extra? I remember i payed something like that when i bought my PS2, but the laws over here say you can demand a new item or get it fixed for free if it gets broken within the warranty. It shouldnt cost you anything.

Yes these are guys I know personally and the reasons they were returned were because they were not working.
#2 the xbox 360 does not run warm it runs hot. Tempeture test have been done and the results are in the heat that is produced is not properly being ventalated.
The whole foil thing just compounded an already exsisting problem.
I won't tell anybody they don't need an intercooler.
I will tell them it gets rid of the heat build up in the 360 and that means in the long run it is better for your system. Sure 360 are running without intercoolers but I believe any serviceman worth his salt will tell you that the 360 heat output is an issue that needs to be addressed.
As far as the intercooler goes I swear by it my xbox 360 use to be hot to the touch not with the intercooler it is cool and at room temp and that is front back left and right. It does what should have been done already.
here is just one link of the few temp test that I have found.
360 temptest (http://blogs.ign.com/mp34play/2006/04/02/8633/)
I think that a company should agressively address an issue of a problem instead of waiting for a class action.
Whether a company is losing money on something is bedsides the point. Somebody is making money at xbox somewhere. xbox live/ marketplace /game royalties/mag subscriptions.
I just hope they take care of everbody like they took care of you. Unfortunately for skelix he had to pay 96.00.

Um...
Important note:
The temperature of the air being exhausted from the CPU out of the rear of the XBOX 360 measured 122 °F or 50°C under load.

I definately see an issue too. If you go to the forums at xbox.com, there are tons of people's systems that have died within the same week (between Aug. 17 - Aug. 30th). Plus every day there are more and more systems shitting the bed. A company like microsoft is known for basically owning the world with its products. But they in fact are ignoring the fact that the systems are failing on people left and right. I don't think it has anything to do with dead rising or saints row, but it has to do with something that nobody knows about yet.

Bill Gates is using the online Xbox 360s to power his mutant super computer cyborg body. The extra strain of powering such a beast is pushing the consoles over the edge. Soon he will be powerful and smart enough to rule the entire world!
Or it could just be that some Xbox 360s were built a bit crap.

As for warranties, If you haven't bought yours yet, Buy it from KMart with a 2-year warranty. It only costs $40.
And it doesn't start until after the manufacturer's warranty ends. (3 months)

I've sent 2 Xbox 360s back now. Just got my 3rd, my latest refurbished machine. So far seems to be working fine. I'll end up purchasing the extended warranty now before this one runs out.
I've never bought an extended warranty on anything electronic, usually that's for people who abuse their systems or are just plain idiots.
Unless it's a disposable Walmart special, anything electronic should last you 2-3 years at the minimum before it gives you any trouble. Even then usually the trouble is abuildup of dust, not an all out hardware failure.
The only disc based systems I've ever had problems with was my dreamcast and my PS2. Both were many many years after purchase. Disc read errors (from not running cleaning discs), I was able to fix both problems myself.
The fact that I've had 2 360's break down since launch is absolutely ridiculous.

I got mine on UK launch on Dec. 8th and it died on me 2 days ago after a 106 hour nonstop session on Dead Rising. The motor on the DVD drive has died :eek 2:. I get the dreaded Unreadable Disc Error now after about 30 minutes of play, along with a hideous winding down noise as it strains to read the drive.
Luckily here the warranty for 360 here is for a year, so I can get it replaced for free. I have since bought an intercooler, and can't wait till I get the label through my email to send my machine off. The quicker it goes, the quicker I get it back, and the quicker I can resume murdering zombies is fun and creative ways.

I won my 360 in the Pepsi/Doritos online contest in Canada. I got it a week before launch. It freezes all the time, as well as having crazy graphical errors (polygons not compeletly closing, or having wierd points outside of closed polygons)*
*Example - In Madden, the players had weird points coming out of their heads and body, kind of looking like a blow fish!
All of the demo's I dowload rarely get by the title screens before it locks up.
Now and then, the music of games just disappears and then a few minutes later, the game freezes.
I called for support, but they wouldn't send me a new one or fix this one because they blamed me for the issues.
So, now it just acts as a $500 DVD player that I got for free!
Worst console ever! Even my NES works better.
