View Full Version : Mew Download at Toys R Us??!

In the bottom right corner of page 97 of October's issue of Nintendo Power is an annoucement that on September 30th you will be able to download Mew to any of your GBA Pokémon games (Ruby, Sapphire, LeafGreen, FireRed and Emerald) at any Toys R Us location. This is supposed to be a promotion commemorating the release of the movie Pokémon: Lucario & The Mystery of Mew and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon.
However, I work at a Toys R Us and have not heard any details yet. I also talked to our region's Nintendo rep and he hadn't heard anything yet. I also checked both www.nintendo.com and www.pokemon.com and there was no mention of it, however it is mentioned in this wikipedia article on Mew http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mew_(Pok%C3%A9mon).
This is going to be monumental to Pokémon fans. The first legitimate release of Mew in America. I wish I had more confirmation about it. But if it's in Nintendo Power, it must be true. All's I know is that I BEST be working on the 30th. I hate wasting gas to drive up there when I'm not working (although it would be worth it for Mew).
I'll post more info (unless someone else beats me to it, which is highly likely what with my lack of time online these days) when I hear it.

fact: illegal pokemon is a major problem in 2010 the market is crowded with so many counterfeits the criminal courts have to play fast and loose with convictions
conversely i am fast and loose when it comes to my sexuality so personally i think it turned into a win win situation
abundance of pokemon and a wide spectrum of people to hump, it was a good year to be a consumer to be sure

I know in the original Red/Blue/Yellow versions of Pokemon that using a cheating device could screw up your Hall of Fame. I was never clear on the details, though. (And I'd still like to know if the Catch Mew (http://pokedex.kary.ca/catchmew.shtml) trick does the same thing.)

I still have a copy of Blue around here somewhere that has my offical Mew. I attended "Pokemon World Tour 99" back in the day and got it there. It even comes with a certificate of authenticity I have around here somewhere.

Also, what version of the games will the Mew download work with?

So it's gotta be an advance one? So that'd be one of:
Emerald
FireRed
LeafGreen
Ruby
Sapphire
Right? I don't have a GBA version of pokemon but I might pick one up if I could get a Mew with it :D

My guess is that since Pokemon Dungeon is coming out in another week or two it'll show up then. TRU is doing a bunch with Pokemon right now, having just released a new Pikachu GBAsp(with brighter screen) yesterday.
I've not seen any mention of anything, but theres still time before the DS/GBA release.

Ahhhahahaha Kaine32's post, that was some quality postmodern rambling there, I just LOLed.
Anyways, good news if true, methinks - now that I have Celebi and Jirachi and Deoxys, Mew is the only one remaining for me. Of course, I still haven't caught many of the legendaries and whatnot from Emerald, but meh - I go in spurts, and right now I'm only playing DS games. I'll get back to Emerald sometime soon.

I hope this doesn't derail this thread too much but a few questions...
I don't have a pokemon game. I had the original blue game when it came out for GBA, but nothing since then. Which version should I get?
Also, will the Toys R Us in Canada be giving away Mews?

The original blue game was for the B&W Game Boy, not the GBA.
A lot of people seem to be really happy with Gold/Silver/Crystal , as that iteration had a lot of nifty features that later versions were lacking. Of course, the newer versions also have nicer graphics, more Pokemon, and different nifty features (like 2 on 2 battles, I believe), so if those things are desirable to you, perhaps that's what you should stick with.
calthaer
09-14-2006, 03:13 PM
Many of those nifty features - like the ability to call other characters in the game with a cell-phone thing - are back in Emerald.
Others - like the radio affecting things in the real world - are imitated / upgraded / expanded with the Abilities.
Honestly, the Abilities are enough of an upgrade for anything, really. They completely change the game, and add a whole new level of complexity to it.
Celebi was available this past summer - they toured the country and gave him out. Should have been a post on this board about it - I remember posting in it, at any rate.

Am I retarded and blind and can't see it or is there not an edit button to edit posts anymore? (smartass comments accepted)
Anyway, UPDATE!!!
This Sunday's flyer for Toys R Us mentions in the bottom right of the front page about the Mew download. It is a definite: September 30 from noon to 3PM. Details available at www.toysrusinc.com/geoffreysbirthday (you have to scroll a little past the YuGiOh and Strawberry Shortcake crap).
Make sure to use the store locator since the company up and closed 75 stores nationwide this past February (including the one right down the street from me - my home for four years!) so you can find one. Anyone in Massachusetts I suggest going to the Peabody one, but that's just shameless self-promotion because that's the one I work at now (if Medford were still open I'd be telling you to go to Medford for the same reason. Selfish little ol' me)

G/S/C are still the only ones with the day/night cycle, but they are not the only ones with the real-time clock.
Ruby / Sapphire / Emerald has a clock, and berries grow and you can water them every so many real-time hours - but the game never really becomes "night" or "day" in terms of changing the way the outdoor areas look.
BUT - the R/S/E clock DOES change whether Eevee can evolve into Espeon or Umbreon based on whether it's a.m. or p.m.

So this is one per "customer" right? I have like....2 fire reds, 2 leaf greens, 3 rubies and 2 sapphires i think. I should be entitled to a few freakin mews for actually buying all those damn carts, heh.
Maybe I could get some people to go with and go two at a time and swap out the GBAs or something.
And what's up with it only being a three hour window? That's messed up.

About a year or two ago - right when Fire Red / Leaf Green was first released - TRU did a similar event. You could come to the store on a Saturday and get a poster, a promo card, and then you could trade for "a favorite Pokemon" or something.
The guy at the store who was doing the trading had no idea; we had to show him how to do it. But basically what Nintendo had done was send each store a normal game cartridge that had its boxes completely filled with various Pokemon - in that case, it was all the ones that were available only on one version or the other (Ekans, Slowpoke, etc.).
This is unlike what they did with Celebi and the "Top 20" this summer - those cartridges were special ones, and could give out an unlimited number of Celebi characters.
This is why it says that Mew is only available "while supplies last." I'm not sure how many Pokemon can be stored in a normal game cartridge's boxes, but it is highly likely that whatever that number is - that's the number of Mews that are available at any given TRU.

Back when the original Pokemon red and blue came out they had the same thing going, only back then it was a contest. You got to peel off some sticker off of a sheet that they had and if you got mew you could bring in your copy, and have them plug mew in, my brother won and got it on his. Pretty cool if you ask me.

I was almost ready to give up. I cannot find a used copy of a GBA pokemon game. They just don't exist around here! I don't know why but people seem to be holding onto them like they're Mario games or something. Actually that's not true, EB had a few copies for sale, but they were 3 bucks less than getting a copy new. Whoop-dee-do.
So I was starting to get pretty pissed. Then I saw just now, online, that Pokemon FireRed is being made a greatest hits. [link (http://videogames.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?z=y&srefer=MGASPARD,%20MGASPARD,%20MGASPARD&ean=2000003120253)]

It doesn't say when they're supposed to be released though. EBGames.com says it should be today: []link (http://www.ebgames.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=160789)]. But I went to three stores today and they were all regular price. Hopefully they'll mark them down by Friday!

Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2, Mario Kart Super Circuit, The Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past/Four Swords, Pokemon LeafGreen and Pokemon FireRed will be re-released on October 2nd with the Player's Choice brand for a suggested retail price of $19.99. Like the previous games in the Player's Choice series, the content within will remain unchanged.
Damn! It looks like its going to be too late to get it as a player's choice, but I really don't want to spend full price on it. But if I don't get it by September 30th I can't get Mew. Damn!

I just phoned my local Toys R Us and the guy knows nothing about getting a free Mew. I lied and told him I was calling for my daughter. I don't have any kids.
So, I think what I'll do is wait until Saturday and pop in around noon. If someone's there giving away Mew, then I'll go buy it at full price at EB (I've got some credit there). If no one is giving away Mew at Toys R Us then I'll just wait and get it cheaper on October 2nd.

I'm really sorry about the multiple posts, but without an edit button, there's nothing I can do.
It might make sense to get the full price version in any event because of this:
Pokemon LeafGreen and Pokemon FireRed are remakes of the classic Game Boy RPG with additional content, including Wireless Adapter support (though the Player's Choice versions will not include the Wireless Adapter as the original release did).
When they release it as a player's choice though, they'll likely sell off the remaining non-player's choice versions at player's choice prices, right? I want the wireless adapter :D
calthaer

a) I saw PC version of Mario and Zelda at Wal-Mart earlier today, so they're definately floating around out there... of course, they hadn't bothered to change the price tags, so no idea if the price has dropped yet.
b) Nintendo stopped bundling the wireless adaptor with FireRed/LeafGreen after about the second or third printing. I've seen stores with copies both with and without the adaptor.

You have to at least be far enough in the game to be able to trade pokemon(since you have to trade for mew) so be sure you've got enough time to speed through the game to that point.

Just got back from it, with a brand new Mew, along with a "magazine" filled with blatant advertisements and a nice sticker set. I felt sorry for the poor guy running the show, he had no idea what he was doing. Apparently they just loaded a bunch of Mew(s) into the PC Boxes, and after he went through the initial six, he had to consult a printout to figure out what to do next. It should be a lot easier once the DS generation comes around.
I was surprised to see a lot of older (ie, college age and up) fans there. I also seemed to cause a disturbance when talking to another fan I mentioned that the new voices on the TV show were "not bad". Ah, nothing like upsetting purists. LOL

Took my kids to the Dover, Delaware TRU today so they could get the Mew. There were a TON of people there, old and young, and we waited in line for a good 20 minutes or so. It wasn't so bad, as all the kids got to talk to each other and whatnot.
Thankfully, the guy doing our downloading knew what he was doing and was pretty cool and everything.

I had the pleasure of running the event for my Toys R Us. Lucky me. OK, first of all, one of my co-workers left me an instruction booklet that was sent to us for the event. It was the Celebi distribution manual from the Journey Across America tour. So I was confused because I read the instructions on the website about how you had to trade a pokémon for Mew and Celebi was a special download. It got my hopes up b/c I was hoping the website was wrong and the Mew distribution would go like Celebi. If only it were that easy. Yesterday morning we open up the stuff for the event and there's a different instruction manual, this one the proper instruction manual for Mew. I don't know WHY we got the Celebi manual too. And lo, it is not a special downloading cartridge like Celebi, it's a copy of FireRed with every box in the PC and the 6 party spots full with nothing but Mew. Which is cool in its own right. However, to have to initiate a trade with each customer, then have to switch out for new Mews every six trades was tedious and time consuming.
So, the event was supposed to last from noon to 3PM. We had people lining up at 11 in the RZone. I started at 11:50 to get a jumpstart. We had to move the line from the RZone to the front of the store (the "seasonal" section) because it outgrew the RZone. My managers cut off the line at 1ish and didn't allow anyone else to get in line. I finished the lucky ones who got in line at roughly 4:40. My manager felt bad for the kids who she had to turn away and asked me if I'd come in at 7AM this morning. I agreed, and we had a special extra hour for a handful of the people who didn't get in line yesterday. That was only about 15 extra people this morning at 7. The people both yesterday and today - kids, parents and teenage/adult pokéfans - that were ridiculously grateful to me. I felt like a Pokémon Goddess.
So, in essence, I got paid to play Pokémon for 4 hours yesterday and almost 2 hours this morning. However, I sat in front of that line for four hours straight yesterday without a break. My only consolation is that I had first and last dibs on that cartridge. Not only did I get 4 Mews (two of them are actually for my boyfriend since he couldn't make it) I also got dibs on any of the traded Pokémon that I wanted. Thanks to the kids in line yesterday and this morning I got 3 different shapes of Unown, 2 eggs, 2 Igglybuffs, a Torchic, a Treecko, a HootHoot and a Vaporeon, which saves me a bit of time and trading effort on my own part.
I doubt I could get away with keeping that cartridge. Nintendo sent us two copies of FireRed loaded with nothing but Mew and they stated in the paperwork that everything would be picked up by the Nintendo rep on their October visit. Now my region's rep is a really cool guy and he hooks me up with tons of swag and gives me the GameCube demo discs and once gave me a copy of DK Jungle Beat, but if he has to return stuff that has to be accounted for, he won't bend. And I know this b/c I've begged for GBA and DS demo carts and he said they have to be sent back and kept track of. I dunno. Maybe I'll luck out. I mean, Limbofunk said he got to keep the LeafGreen from the event he did 2 years ago. I won't be able to beg for myself, though. I won't be working the day the Nintendo rep comes in cuz I'm in school now. *sigh* can't win 'em all.

Did you get to keep the instructions or anything? Would be a cool scan.
My store was fairly dead once the "i don't know what i'm doing" of the person in charge of trading was filtered out. Me and the woman got one each, we were going to get back in line and get more but...we didn't. Oh well.
So mine has an OT of MYSTRY even though the cart's trainer was named RED. "Fateful encounter" as well. Interesting.

Hall of Fame records what team you used to defeat the Elite Four. And Gameshark probably won't do anything terrible to it... finding and capturing Missingno. (which was only possible on Red and Blue though) tends to mess up your Hall of Fame. But then again, who really bothers with that much anyway? *L*

Probably the reason I bought Red about a year after Blue. I couldn't find anyone else to trade Pokemon with, so basically I used my copy of Red as my "Shark-able" copy, and then traded some Level 5 starters and Red exclusives onto my Blue copy.
Never messed with the stats though. Couldn't figure out the hex codes anyway *L*.

There's also an Arceus available in the Dream World if you use the password ARCEUSVOTE on the promotions section.
I've been pretty lazy getting the promotions for this generation, seeing how most of the Wonder Cards are available online for download; you can "distribute it" to yourself or anyone else as many times as you want, and whenever you want.
