I bought a Gameboy Color when it first came out. I played it for awhile, lost interest and gave it to my niece. I've always regretted giving away or selling the systems that I've given away or sold.

Well, last weekend my parents were having a moving sale - a yard sale to sell all the stuff they didn't want to move to their new house. Me and my wife went and helped them and brought some of our garbage to sell (I only sold doubles for videogames!). My sister and nieces came and did the same thing, and sure enough my niece was selling her gameboy color!

I waited for her to put a price on it, went over and added $5.00 to the price. So I ended up paying $15.00 for a GBC, I normally would never spend that much but it was just to give her some money. I was really excited because this was the first time I've ever been able to get back the actual same system I've gotten rid of.

The condition of the Gameboy Color was TERRIBLE. The case was scratched all to hell. There were a few big gouges, and the case itself was covered in a million little scratches. It had obviously spent a lot of time on the floor. The screen was the same way, covered in little sratches and it had a few doozies. The buttons were all gunky and gross (it was so bad that I, a grown man, had a hard time pushing the power switch to ON). It did work though.

So, now I'm restoring my old GBC to her former glory. I purchased a replacement shell for her, and I just ordered a new screen cover and battery cover from eBay. I got a GBC carrying case too, to keep her minty.

The replacement shell I bought came with a front and back shell, a tri wing bit, new D-pad, A+B buttons and power switch. Unfortunately I didn't think of taking pics of her in her crappiest state :(

Here are some pictures of my renewal project so far. She's got the new case on her, but the old screen cover and battery cover. You can see how bad it was by looking at those two items.

I give you credit for paying for the thing instead of playing the "Can I just have it back?" card.

I had vaguely similar situation once; being talked into leaving my 1st Gameboy and all the games for my sister when I moved out of my father's house. A lot of great titles, too: SML, Qix Nobunaga's Ambition the whole Final Fantasy Legend series.

Over the next five years or so I went through a lot of ups and downs (mostly downs) in my relationship with the old man. Always in the back of my head was "Will I ever get that Gameboy back?", but was reluctant to confront him about it.

Then one day I was visiting him for the 1st time in a couple of years. I had my infant son with me so that had my dad in a better-than-average grandfatherly mood. So eventually he says, "Oh! I have something for you!" and hands me back all my GB stuff. My sister had barely touched any of it. That was a lucky break.

Nice story and recovery effort, both are very impressive!

Oh, and Pantechnicon, that wouldnt be a member of "Kraftwerk" in your avatar, and possibly from the "We are the Robots" music video?

All that work when a new one probably would have cost less? LOL

Lol, no that's cool. You got YOUR GBC back. Sweet.

sweet post...that's awesome that you A) helped your niece out, B) got back YOUR system, and C) restored a system that would have probably gotten junked had it not been YOURS
