Well, i joined this site not too long ago, and decided to do the following:

1. Get rid of anything i no longer wanted, would never play, or that were terrible impulse buys.

2. collect nes games

3. after a while, begin collecting n64 games.

however, ive run into trouble:

getting ahold of boxed nes games can be difficult, as i want to do this in the wild and hunt for them myself as well as use DP. Im 18, so im lean more towards n64 than nes for nostalgia. Im beginning to think that I want to clear out my nes collection, of everything that I will never play, and begin getting n64 boxed games. what do you think? I am more likely to play the n64 stuff, moreso than the nes stuff. any and all opinions are welcome! :)

I say go ahead & go for N64 games, only bc I've no interest in them & would want your NES games. :D

I think boxed N64 games are a good thing for you to collect because:

1. You're able to still find them in the wild fairly often

and

2. The percentage of boxed N64 games that can be had on the cheap is much, much higher than of NES games.

NES games (especially boxed) would really cost you a lot to collect from scratch, as you'd be having to hit places like eBay a lot to fill in holes in your collection. If you're looking to find a collection to complete, go for the N64. Like mentioned before, you can still find the games out there in the wild pretty frequently.

You should always collect the things you're going to enjoy the most. The NES is great, but if you're only 18, it is slightly "before your time", and yes, complete games can be expensive. That being the case, if you're more interested in playing/collecting N64, then I'd go with that for now. There's so much stuff out there that I really want, so personally, I really try to limit the amount of stuff I buy that I'm really not going to use. A lot of "collectors" are just people with OCD who must have everything, and I just don't see the sense in that. It's better off in the hands of others who will really appreciate it. Just do what you like. Good luck. :)

If you're dedicated, a complete N64 collection shoudn't take you very long. I'd think if you collected the console exclusively for a year, you'd be able to amass a complete (or very close to it) collection.
Because of that, I'd say you should pick up NES games as well as N64 games. You said that "getting ahold of boxed nes games can be difficult", which is true... but they ARE out there and they aren't all that hard to find.

This way would give you long- and short-term goals.
That's just the way I see it.

I def. can say this is a great idea. I just don't play my 130 Genesis games collection. I just have no interest in it any more. So, I'll be selling/eBaying it this month.

Why keep clutter around you ain't gonna touch when you could get some $$ out of it? And spend on the games you really want, or on something more important like bills? Good logic all the way around.

I would think that in collecting N64 games you would end up with much that you would soon no longer want or would never play.

I say go for N64 since that is what you are leaning towards. As everyone has said, most of the games can be had inexpensively and easily.

I would think that in collecting N64 games you would end up with much that you would soon no longer want or would never play.

I think that can be said for most systems.

The great thing about collecting stuff is, there's no right or wrong way to do it. You can start a collection of games that only use purple text on the back of the box if you want!

That being said, I can tell you personally that I tend to lose interest in collections for systems that I didn't own "back in the day." For me, it seems like that without any nostalgia attached to the items, it just seems like I'm buying expensive pieces of plastic that don't mean anything to me.

It's hard for me to think of the N64 as being nostalgic, but if you're 18 then you were about 8 when the system launched, so that would make more sense to collect than something that came out before your time.

Being the packrat I am, I would suggest keeping the NES and concentrate on collecting N64 games if those are the ones you like.

Now likely there will be a drop in the NES, SNES, and N64 market when the Wii comes out. However, I think people will eventually go back to the old systems again. Having the games downloaded Wii system just doesn't seem to me as nice as having the real thing.

I must really live in hicksville because I can't find boxed N64 games to save my life let alone anything older. GC games are fairly common with box and instructions. The others I have given up on even trying.

Granted I can buy them on Ebay. But, locally it's like trying to find a needle in a hay stack.

Anyone know of a place in the Dallas Fort Worth area the I might be able to check out?

Why not just get games for both of the systems? If you are worried about getting stuff you won't play or enjoy, just get the games you think you may like for each system. The NES has a damn good library, even if it is before your time.

While some people are completists for a given system, I can tell you it is not the end of the world if you don't have every single game for a particular system. I have over a dozen video game systems, with no more than 20 games for each one. The most I have for any one of my systems might be the 17 or 18 games I have for Saturn.

That is what I enjoy, getting games for multiple systems. It means even if you were desperate for cash and needed to get rid of one or two systems (and the library that came with it), you STILL have a few other systems available to begin working on all-new libraries for. Concentrate only on N64 or NES and you may be SOL if you need to sell some stuff for fast cash, since it'd be a lot more damaging blowing up a collection if you are only concentrating on one system.

Maybe it is just me but I never do anything with the box or manual but look at them. Lord knows I never read instruction manuals and just prefer to dive right into games not knowing what to do until I've had on-the-job training by PLAYING it.

You'd take a little pressure off yourself if you choose NOT to limit yourself to games that come with the box and manual. I have no problem settling for disc-only or loose carts. If I want the manuals or boxes that badly, I just get them off of Ebay later on. Sure, it runs me a few dollars more than I like on occasion but most of the time, I never bother resorting to this since the box/manual aren't always that important to me.

...Ergo, why not just buy games you might actually want to play?

guess im nes bias but I also have a close to complete n64 collection...my big thing is more than a third of the n64 games are sports titles so if you want games that are fun to play with variety nes if you just want a collection that can be easily completed go n64

I fully agree with this.
