There's an auction for a brand new Earthbound but the auction actually has no pics. I emailed the seller for pics and he sent me this link:

http://bufftbone.smugmug.com/gallery/1872595

Now before I place a bid, do you DP'ers think that these pics show that the box has NEVER been opened as the seller claims?? Is there actually a way to know for sure if the Earthbound box has actually been opened??

Here's the link to the auction btw:

I doubt that it's never been opened since it doesn't have the plastic wrap on it. I mean, if it was me, I'd be too curious not to open it once and check it out. But that's just me.

The cardboard definitely looks like it's been opened. I'd be very wary, personally. Come on, who takes a game out of the shrinkwrap, then NEVER opens it?

Hard to say, but it doesnt really matter if its been opened or not as long as its 100% mint as described. Unopened copies only raise in value if its sealed. Theres no way to really proof if its been opened or not so i doubt anyone want to pay alot extra because of this if its not sealed.

Maybe never opened by him. Looks to me like it's been open at least a few times.

I think that the fact that he doesn't show a pic in his auction and doesn't state that the shrinkwrap has been removed is more than a little misleading. People hear new and think that it is sealed. Anything not sealed kind of no longer becomes new whether it was played or not. I think that the bidding may go beyond what is normal for a complete/mint copy.

To me it looks like picture 8 has the white line along the seam which indicates the box was opened at least once.

From what I know, the Earthbound box for the SNES was never originally factory sealed or shrinkwrapped.

Well I have had several Near Mint copies of this game and this one beats them all.

Nice looking box there, wonder how it looks inside :)

As the above poster said, Earth Bound for SNES was not sealed at all. It wasn't sealed with shrinkwrap, nor did it use those clear plastic circlular stickers that were sometimes used with larger games.

It does look like it was opened at least once, but that's still the mintiest Earth Bound box I've ever seen! @_@

Walmart blew these out towards the end of the snes lifecycle at $5 each. Must have been 20 or so at the store I visited. Looking back I should have made a roadtrip cross country and stocked up but anyway none of them were sealed in any way.

Yeah. I had 6 of these at one time and none of them had a seal. I bought them new from Walmart. Mine were scuffed a bit and looked used but the contents were flawless. I can't remember if it was just the cart that came in a bag or if the guide had a bag as well.

Looks like somebody most likely made a deal with him outside of eBay. I wonder how much it went for.

It is? I saw another copy that was mint that didnt sell for $200. It was opened, but this copy might also been opened, not easy to tell. Maybe the seller still has it if you're iteressted. Link to auction here. (http://cgi.ebay.com/SNES-Super-Nintendo-Earthbound-COMPLETE-NEAR-MINT-NEW_W0QQitemZ120027661356QQihZ002QQcategoryZ62053Q QrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting)

Altho $225 isnt a bad price for a mint copy, but im not sure its a steal.

Like new and new are not the same. I believe this copy to be new, personally. At most it was opened once (the box) but the seller does not realize the items value and did supply pictures upon request so it appears they are telling the truth. I believe the item to never have been played etc. Could be wrong but a truly like new copy is worth that much anyways. While I feel $225 is not a steal, it is a pretty decent price. Much more than that and I would not have been interested. The only reason I made the offer even is that the seller told me they had a lot of offers to end the auction with the highest being $200 and they intended to end the auction for that amount, so I upped it.

Like new and new are not the same.

Of course not, but as its not sealed it not easy to prove if its really 100% new or not. As i mentioned above, i dont think anyone would would pay alot more for a game thats just claimed to be unopened, since you just have to take his word for it. Anyway, $225 for this mint copy, opened or not, isnt a bad price. Now you got a mint copy and im sure you're happy with it, that is what matters :)

THAT'S IT !!!!! I'm retiring until Raregamegirl finally runs out of money LOL

Within the last month, there have been too many sealed Nintendo stuff that she’s outbid me on LOL Nice win on the Eartbound… and that sealed Zelda too from last week (BTW is that your second sealed copy of that ????)

I think the next time I see a sealed game I want I'll email you first to find out your plans for it LOL

Also, would love to see some pics of your collection! Must be sweet with all your recent pick ups.

225 is a fair price for Earthbound in this condition whether it it was played or not. This game looks to be in absolutely perfect condition. And when your a completist like raregamergirl or Blitzwing you have to be choosey about the games that you get. Earhbound is especially a case in point as so many copies are missing pieces to truely make it complete and a lot of them have minor to major flaws in some pieces of it.

I'm interested in seeing pics of your collection as well. You've won a lot of nice things lately. [/i]

I mainly go after NES items and oddball promo items. The past few months though I have started to get interested in sealed NES games (namely sealed NES games). I am soon to have 3 sealed gold zeldas (have 2 in my possesion, waiting on the 3rd to arrive), the price was too good to pass up (they will be trade bait). for my first (which I have had for a long time), I paid around $300, but this was a couple years ago. For the most recent 2, about $250 each and if sold properly, they should pull $400 during the right season of the year. Once my NES CIB collection is finished, I will get pictures of evertyhing in my collection. I still like all my promo's and oddball items the most out of anything though :)

It would have sold for MUCH less had this topic not been created, could have been a nice snag for the few people who knew about the photo gallery.

I knew about the auction, had it on my watchlist before this. I had not seen pictures, though.

I'll add my 2 cents. The copies I bought from Best Buy were NOT sealed.

The only way to tell is see if the cardboard flap is bent or creased in some way.

I bought a couple, opened one and still have a few saeled somewhere down the basement.

I remember actually the week Earthbound came out Best Buy had it on sale really cheap ($38 or so, if I remember correctly, when everyone else was selling it for $50), so coupled with the $10 off coupon in Nintendo Power I got mine really cheap the day it came out. I still have that copy.
