View Full Version : Names on carts

Atari 5200

I have noticed that A LOT of carts have names on them from where people were scarred that someone may steal their copy of SMB/DH. I thought it might be usless fun and interesting to post what some of the names were that were sketched on the carts. Here are some of mine:

Johnny Roberts-Frogs and Flies-2600

Matthew M.-Tetris-GB

Barbara-Super Mario RPG

And some guy named Chase Heston used to own nearly all of my Game Gear games...

My latest game to feature Some fool's signature was Bayou Billy. Thanks a ton, De Martino, wherever you may be.

Oh well, I guess I can't complain about it. After all, I remember putting one of those my name is stickers you get on school field trips on my copy of Super Metroid when I was a kid. Needless to say it's long gone now thanks to Goo Gone.

I'll make sure to spam you inbox if I ever find one of your games when I'm in Brockton. :P :D

My SNES Wordtris has an address sticker with a fat orange cat on it -- Michael Flores. I though it looked goofy so I left it on.

I had a Friend growing up that had his name And phone number engraved into all of his NES games on the top right under the sticker.

He stillcan't understand why I don't want to buy them.

Tom Jarosh 941-xxxx .... this was before you had to dial the area code first.

I have quite a few at home and need to clean them up. I might dedicate some time this weekend to sit outside and do it. I also have a ton of games with freaking stickers on them, need to clean those up as well.

Bubble Bobble: "Ryan + Sean"

A great game for a couple of guys to play at the apartment before going clubbing together. Rainbow Islands may be their real favorite, though :)

To be true, probably a couple of brothers close to each other in age who had to "share" a bedroom, NES and all the games. Could be.

every single game I own has my initials on it and all my console have my full name. I don't like my stuff to wind up missing, also, hopefully it will prevent me from ever being able to sell my games.

lots of my games have former owners names on them as well. My copy of 10 yard fight says "Angelo" and my personal favorite, my copy of Trojan has "Vince Betteridge 925-6982" I've always been tempted to call Vince up

I have a Bart vs. the Space Mutants (NES) cart where it says "Bowins" on the side of it.

Interestingly enough, that is actually MY cart back from when I was a kid, and I found it at a pawn shop.
I created a thread about it around a year ago.

None of my games have names on them, but I do have some NES carts w/numbers and labels on them

Super Mario Bros 2 - 4, or a T with a slight upsweep of the horizontal line, I dunno

Ninja Gaiden - 236

AD & D: Heroes of the Lance - a Photographics barcode label. I didn't know Photographics sold used games at one point..

Shinobi - a half-peeled VOID sticker.

Ninja Gaiden III - Photographics 2957

Dance Aerobics - N63

Darkwing Duck - an old GameStop price label

But I remember when GS still sold NES, SNES and Genesis games how many carts had the name "Sergio" on them. And I think it was this kid I went to school with, since there weren't that many Sergios in Medford that I knew of. And I still see names on many, many GameBoy carts, ESPECIALLY Pokémon games, at least in my local GameStop.

Also wasn't a name, but I bought Ocarina of Time from Gamestop only to discover from the savefiles it was formally owned by a friend of mine. Kinda cool.

I had one cart awhile back that had some kids name and Social Security number engraved on it. I guess people were a little careless back then.

I got a bunch of SNES games and before I cleaned off the names, I wrote them all down.
On Mickey Mania, it had a sticker on it from Easy Video in Fairlawn New Jersey and it also has Belinda Kovach written on it.
Donkey Kong Country 2 also hsa Belinda's name on it. Flinstones has Josh on the front and Belinda on the back.
The Jungle Book has a Blockbuster Video sticker on it, I was going to remove it, but if I did, I'd have to buy it.

I have two pokemon carts with "N.W." on them. The pokemon on the carts were named DR.DRE and SNOOP DOG so I can only assume they decided not to put the "A." initial on the cart for some reason.

Ugh. Nothing like permanent marker to f@$# up a mint cart...

Is there a way to remove that stuff??

my good pal spoon had a wonderful idea he presented to me one day. i support this one 100%

write down the name of every asshole kid who wrote their name on a video game cartridge. then, when we're millionaires somewhere down the line, look them up, go to their house, and the beat the fuck out of them, a la jay & silent bob at the end of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, for talking shit about them on the internet.

Weird, all of the ones I can think of are for the NES, SNES or N64!

NES:

Karnov - J.N (On the back of the cart)
Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt - "Jack and Mary"
Raid on bungeling bay - "E" In permanent marker, right under the label.

Super NES:

Kirby's Dream Course - C Lowery
ON The Ball - (I think this is a password, though) - Pic-A-Flick Greer Plaza (On the front and back of the cart)
Saturday Night Slammasters - "VJ"

N64 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater - (This is hard to read, and I may not have the name right) - Marlowe

I have other carts with names on them, But I'm not going through over 750 games to find out which ones have names on them.

Gyruss (NES) - "Cory"
Xevious (NES) - "Wagner"
The Karate Kid (NES) - "R.F."
Winter Games (NES) - "Ryan Munn"
Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat (NES) - "Andre"

Rambo (NES) - "Baich"
Knight Rider (NES) - "Pettefer"

You know, writing your name on your cartridge is the equivalent of having your name on the tag of your underwear. Pure Geek :)

I'm sure if you look hard enough, somewhere out there, you may very well find a few Atari carts with my name on 'em. The reason for the names is simple.

Way back when, we used to trade carts all of the time. "Wow, you have Demons to Diamonds? I've always wanted to play that! Tell you what, I'll loan you my Yar's Revenge for it!" So it was like one big round robin, kids would loan other kids their carts, who would then loan other carts to other kids, and 'round she goes...

So, to make sure everyone kept everything clear and you got your games back, you'd scrawl your name on the label. I never viewed it as anything other than that.

Word.

I don't see why people are so angry about names. They had a legitimate purpose (I have around 80 or so games with my own last name on it). Remember that these games used to be worth 50 a pop, easily...and I...and my dad didn't want me losing them.

I put my initials on every game, booklet, case, and strategy guide I ever had ever since I found out my brother's friend been stealing my stuff.

What's worse is that my brother knew and didn't stop him and, on top of that, my parents were no help.

Next time you see names on a game, remember he/she is not at fault, blame the jack@ss who steal games that don't belong to them. :grrr:

A few more:

A Bug's Life (N64) - "READ" written on the back label
Jurassic Park Part 2: The Chaos Continues (SNES) - "HASS" written under the front label
Kwirk (GB) - "Reeves" written on the back
Operation Wolf (NES) "Rick Rossi" written under the front label, and "Rossi" on the back with a phone number below it
One of my extra SMB/DH carts - "Ravilyn" written on the back

I'm just doing these off the top of my head:

My T&C Surf Designs used to be "Chrissie's Tape."
A good portion of my Master System games were marked up on the cases by "Brian"

Annoyingly, a lot my games with names were something that is either rare or desirable.
Through the magic of Gamebit drivers, these people now owned different games.

Such as:
"Jesse" owned my FF2 cart at one point (Jesse now owned Vegas Stakes)

Earthbound, it didn't have a name, but for some reason had a ton of irrelevant stickers on the back of it (which are now on Stargate)

And most recently, "BUBBA" made his mark on the back of River City Ransom. Bubba was now the proud owner of the NES Barbie game from another lot.

I think the weirdest thing I've seen written on a cart was "Spook" on a copy of Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts I used to have.

The most annoying, however, is "Alex" on my copy of Stinger. Not only did Alex write his name in permanent marker, but he also CARVED it into the plastic. It's hard enough to get marker off normally, let alone when it's deep down in carved out grooves. Granted, it's kind of pointless to care because even if I get the marker off, there's no way to get rid of the carving. :/

Untill the store owner gets wise to it and starts writting the kids name on everything;)

Ahh I get NES,SNES games all the time with names written on them....I usually(try) take it right off with a toothbrush and 91% alcohol as I HATE seeing names on carts.

I just thew out a SNES system(had a liguid in it)it had this kids name etched deep in the side..

Right now in my box of crap
NES SMB cart with JESUS on the back, this was with a bunch of games all with the same name on it..It's been on for a long time and I've had a hard time getting it off.
SNES HOOK cart says Jonathon D on the front
SNES Mario Missing cart says MER in a kinda signature writting
NES SMB GAD on back but on sticker.

Just off the top of my head I can't specifically name any my games with names on them. I know I do have some annoying names on my NES games. I'll probably post any amusing ones later. I did get a box of around 20 common Atari games at a church sale for $2. Every game has "LARRY" written on the front of the label and the top of the label. I really want to kick LARRY in the balls. Common Atari games aren't work much by themselves, much less with Larry's John Hancock on each one. His signature is huge! it covers the labels of each Atari game!

I've got tons of carts (mostly NES carts) that are covered with signatures and other marks, usually in permanent ink, though occasionally stickers and etchings turn up. I've got a copy of LifeForce that was practically colored in with permanent marker. My favorite, though, has to be the stickers on my copy of Metroid that identify it as "Defendent's Exhibit B."

I generally am picky about what the game looks like when I buy, and I've passed on uncommon/rare games due to condition of the outsided of the cart. Foolish sometimes, I know, but I can't bring myself to degrade the collection as a whole by having a sore thumb stand out among all the rest of the crowd.
Ocassionally, though, one slips through the cracks. I just went through some 2600 carts the other day, and I've got a Pitfall with a huge black permanent "MASON" across the front label.
I've had NES games in the past with bad back labels (I switch them out), so really all I am concerned with there is the condition of the front of the game.
I probably have several more carved, written on, etc. carts and discs kicking around someplace, but right now that's the only one I can think of offhand, other than my first NES Metroid, which was virtually labelless and held together by a strange combination of black electrical and duct tape.

I was just looking through some SNES carts and found a few more. Most of these are from video rental stores instead of some person, but I figured I'd list them anyways.

TMNT Tournament Fighters - "Javier Ortiz" written under the back label. This was bought locally and I knew a kid in my fifth grade class with that name. Wonder if this copy used to be his...
Raiden Trad - "Video Adventures" written under the front label, with their phone number below it.
On The Ball - "BBV" written under the front label. I had cleaned most of the writing off along with an area code that was next to it, and now the "BBV" can only be seen if you take a close look at the cart. I'm assuming this was a former Blockbuster rental copy and had the area code of the store's address on it. Speaking of which...
Super Baseball 2020 - "PROPERTY OF HOLLYWOOD VIDEO" stamped in the plastic on the back of the cart, above the back label. My cousin purchased this at GameCrazy when they first opened up and eventually gave it to me. I have some other carts that are former HV rentals, but fortunately, they just had HV rental stickers that I've since removed. The only other SNES cart I've ever owned with that stamped in the plastic was my copy of Fun N' Games, which was traded off.
Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures - "PCMNDPW" and "MSPCMND" written on the back of the cart. These looked like passwords, so I looked them up, and sure enough, they are - the first one allows you to play the original Pac-Man without having to play through the game, and the second one allows you to play Ms. Pac-Man.

Although I hate the name on the cart thing...I fully understand with the amount of trading that went on way back when. I grew up in a small town and can say that back during the NES era, we traded games constantly...it helped to know which game belonged to each person.

That stopped with the NES though. By the time the SNES came out, games were too expensive and not as many people had them...the trading stopped and the renting started.

I have a few titles with names on them, some I could clean off, some I couldn't...

Mega Man 3 - when I got it all those years ago, it had a red stamp "PROPERTY OF PHARMORE." PharMore is now the parking lot for Lowes (damn you Lowes...) and the stamp has long since faded.

Section Z - Greg in BIG cursive green

Legacy of the Wizard - LOUP

Shadowgate - Front - JamW S--W--T (?) Back - JamM S---WO-T (???) I can't read it at all

Blaster Master - Sticker - Selection Video 102 Kimbell Ave. #2 S. Burlington, VT 05403 (bought at an independent rental shop in Florida; games travel?)

And my mom wrote my name on Yoshi's Island (!) when a friend from school needed help beating one of the bosses in world 4. (first she throws away my boxes, then she writes on one of my games...) How in the world can I clean that?

Lastly, my SNES controller had a light blue squiggle above the D-Pad for YEARS. It just came off when I decided to clean it, and to be honest, I miss it. I don't remember how it got there, but I remember going through a lot of Big League Chew gum back when I rented SNES games from Blockbuster. That blue stuff sure was good...
