View Full Version : Cancelled/unreleased games...

I could have sworn there was a thread here where everyone pooled their brains to think of all of the cancelled and unreleased games they could think of, but several searches fielded no results. So, hopefully either someone can link me to a thread like that that I may have missed or failing that we could get one started. For this, I would include games that were moved to other platforms - but were ultimately released in some form. i.e. Too Human which has existed in several incarnations, and Resident Evil 2 (1.5) that was drastically different to the ultimately released version. Basically if the released build is radically different enough from any other builds in the game's life-cycle... hopefully that makes sense. Obviously a lot of games undergo changes, but I'm talking "start from scratch" jobs.

A few I can think of:

PlayStation

Resident Evil "1.5"
Too Human
Thrill Kill

Dreamcast

Half-Life
Propellar Arena

GameCube

Dead Phoenix
Raven Blade
Donkey Kong Racing
Stage Debut

Those come to mind, but I know there's lots more on every system.

Are we including games that were canceled for the US but still released somewhere in the world?

I really wanted to play Rent A Hero in English on Xbox. I think the Xbox port did get released in Japan... I think.

funny thing is I knew someone who had a reviewer's copy of that game, all it was missing was the end credits...should've asked to borrow it when I had the chance (he wasn't looking to sell)

but here's a couple entries

kill wheel psx
sonic xtreme saturn (supposedly 3d sonic game on saturn)
Kameo for the xbox, and probably n64
lobo snes

gamespot has an article looking into unreleased games

I have spent some time playing Thrill Kill. It was quite a fun game, it is a disappointment that it did not see a proper release.

Wow, awesome replies. That's why I love these boards so much - people usually only chime in when they have something worthwhile to add, and it is always great info.

It definitely doesn't hurt, especially in regards to American/Japanese releases. Rent A Hero had a lot of potential to be a popular game in the States, at least as a cult favorite. Shame it missed both chances.

Star Trek: Secret of Vulcan Fury for PC. Story penned by D.C. Fontana, lots of (at the time) innovations in adventure gaming, full cast voices that were fully recorded before it was scrapped.

Even if you're not a big Trek fan, the early adventure games were top notch and this was shaping up to be a later iteration of them.

Damn shame.

From what i've been told, that was pretty close to being finished. Dude named Gavroche has it after he bought out interplay, but he disapeared after he scammed a number of people...

If it hasn't already been mentioned, don't forget StarCon for the PS1.
