Hey Guys.
I sold an item on ebay, $250. Sent it off using the shipping method as requested. 2 weeks later the seller writes to me ( via paypal claim) to say customs held the package and are returning it to me, and he wants his money back. So im concered, has anyone EVER had a package held up by customs and had it returned to them.
The buyer is saying that customs wouldnt give him the package and are sending it back to me. Now i have paypal trying to get him his money back, and im saying i sent it, and have proof from the buyer ( what he told me in his email ) that customs got. There doesnt seem to be any proof that customs are returning it.
So what to do? There is no money in my paypal account, so i dont think they can get anything out of me, but does that mean i wont ever be able to use that account? or if i accept money with it, will they take it from me?
Any help or advice would be great :) This guy Girolamo Raguso, mraguso79 Seems legit, but he took forever to pay, and caused a lot of hassle, and for a while his account was "No Longer Registered User" on ebay ( which has recently changed).. Anyone dealt with him?

I'm no expert but this all sounds very weary. Hopefully someone else will be able to answer you better. Good luck.

This sounds pretty sketchy and unforently if you did'nt ship it with a tracking number , you're out of luck. Try to stall paypal as much as you can before they issue a refund and wait till the package gets back to you so you can either reship or issue a proper refund.

Tell him he'll get the money back once you get the item. Not before.
I'd deal with a negative at this point. This sounds really, REALLY fishy.

ALSO! Demand proof that Customs returned the item. Ask for proper documentation, if they returned it then they must've given him a reason to do so.

Yeah the biggest problem is that they want to be pay the shipping ( 33 pounds ).. i dont see why i should have to pay the shipping if there is proof that i shipped it and if customs got it and returned it.. This really sucks.. Clearly i sent it, ( its tracked out of my country ) .. and he said customs in his country got it.. so why should i be held accountable? If the package was returned id issue a refund for the cost of the item ( not the shipping as thats not my fault ). Paypal on the other hand just wants to refund everything... damn it..

To top it off IF i get the pacakge back i'll have to pay the return leg of the shipping according to my local post office.. i should really be charging the buyer for that aswell.!

This happened to me once, about five years ago with a buyer from Sweden. He bought an expensive vintage shirt, but didn't want to pay the customs fee on it (I had written down the accurate value of the item). Essentially, he refused to pick the shirt up and finish the transaction, and it was shipped back to me, marked and stamped up like crazy. I got it ~10 days later.
I gave this guy a refund in full, since the package was so light (and I knew I could get 5-10 more if I tried selling it again). In your case, I would simply offer a refund minus shipping and a promise of no negative feedback/no NPB report. This way you can sell it again and not deal with this nonsense. I don't know if you're a big seller or not, but this stuff doesn't happen too often.
Of course, if he refuses to work with you, he can simply escalate the claim and he'll almost definitely get his full payment back. You'll likely get the item back (assuming your return address was legible), but you'll be out the shipping, unfortunately.

Unfortunately the buyer escalated the claim within 5 minutes of filing his first claim, and he never contacted me privately, which is why i think this is dodgy.. I doubt anything will come back, and i'l be out for the 250 !! Damn paypal..

Where are all of the answers from people who claim that there's no reason not to ship Internationally?

Oversea's shipping can be a pain because of the custom fee's and amount of time..The last three items ive sent overseas
one to spain took 2 months for item to arrive
one to france took almost 3 months
and one to austrilia of all places took over 3 months. i told the bidder before they bid the amount of time it took the items i sent to the other places to get there.
Ive had my problems with paypal I just got hosed for 50.00 some dollars over a theif..paypal even sided with me on the matter but they had used a credit card and the credit card company refunded them the money and i got screwed.
pay is a big risk but just like everything else today if you want to use there services they have you by the balls.
I also had withdrew all the money out of my account because I didnt want to give the person who ripped me off a cent but I was told simply sorry this happened but even if you withdraw all the money and close your account we will just turn you over to a collection agency.Paypal said they would dispute the matter with the credit card company but Im basically screwed out of 50.00 dollars and a snes system.
Until people start leaving ebay in record numbers (paypal is part of ebay) They arent really concerened about customer service they got there money you got hosed if you quit using ebay ten new people will take your place

Custsoms cant deny him the package. They can demand that hes there to open it for inspection, but since its legal thats not the issue. What reason did he give you btw, why they didnt want to give him his package? I guess he got slapped with some taxes and custom fees and he dont want to pay that.

I shipped a package to Denmark last month. Shipped it Global Priority, which is 5-7 day shipping.
It took 35 days. I hate to ship Internationally.

Theres nothing wrong shipping internationally.. I do it all the time ( im in New Zealand ).. however my worst experiences have been with Germany and Italy...
US Post offered too many options to ship overseas. Quite honestly ship global priority and you wont have any issues ( in lots of cases Global Priority is less expensive than std Parcel Post )..

Of course there are crooked Americans as well. But in the US there's absolutely no reason to not have a confirmed PayPal address and we also don't have to deal with the possibility of customs screw ups or delays.
In other countries the percentage of confirmed addresses is a lot less, you have much less ability to track a shipped package and there are many more unexpected shipping delays (which again you can't track). I just strongly feel that shipping anything that you can't track to a person who can't get their address confirmed is just asking for PayPal troubles.

Actually, on average, I've found that Parcel Post inflates shipping cost by up to TEN DOLLARS. Global Airmail actually allows rather big boxes to be sent that way, so it's a relief. Too bad you can only ship up to four pounds that way.
