I recently stumble across the positively motherlode of BBSes ! lol

Computer > Apple "Macintosh SE/30"
CPU > 68030
CPU Speed > 33MHz
RAM > 8MBs
HDD > 80MBs
OSS > "System 6"
Modem > 28.8K

How do I connect to a BBS with that hardware ?

And Flack -- your book sounds like a winner !
I'll be sure & get a copy.
Between that & the BBS DVD I have a ton ta delve into ! lol

I think most BBS's these days work over the internet using Telnet... but if you want to dial into local BBS's the oldschool way, you're going to need a terminal program. I'm not familiar enough with Macs to know of any good programs, but considering the age of your machine, my guess is that one was probably included in the operating system if you look around for it.

ZTerm is a good terminal program for Macs if you're going to use modem.

If you're going to telnet, you'll need MacTCP, as well as System 7. Since you've got an SE/30, System 7 will run fine, though I recommend you use 7.0 or 7.1 instead of 7.5 and just transplant MacTCP into it.

I'd wager most of those numbers no longer work very well.

I'm also inclined to say that a BBS experience without garishly colored ANSI graphics is missing something, but if the Mac SE has served you well so far, maybe you won't miss them.

This site (http://www.dmine.com/telnet/) has a list of BBSes you can connect to via Telnet. It also has information about setting up your own Telnet BBS.

It is my understanding that Mac BBS software was actually kind of hard to come by. Of course, there were some really, really cool apps like TeleFinder and FirstClass, but those won't work with a standard terminal client.

Yes, it is my experience as well. The only Mac BBS I called ran its own BBS software.

As for the lack of colours, I have never called an ANSI BBS unless I was looking for some very specific warez.
