Is it wise to put in a price of what you've seen it go for in an auction listing on eBay?

It seems kind of silly in the first place, because the auction that has that in probably won't go for that much, due to the fact that you pretty much are scaring off people that may not want to pay 300 for an item at first. Secondly, it may have went for that much in that SPECIFIC auction, but will it again? And will that HELP you, really?

What's your opinion? And feel free to share personal experiences.

I think it's ok if you're under the price to make it seem like a bargain. If you start at what the item has been going for then no, I don't think it'll help.

I usually do a quick bit of research on prices before I list stuff, so if I see an item I'm selling sell way above what it normally goes for, yeah, I will mention it in my item description.

"Hey, this item sold for $80 last week (link if it's not to a direct competitor). Get a much better deal here!"

I'm doing it now with my Super Bomberman 5 auction, which ends later tonight. I mentioned it went for 59.00 cartridge only last month. Sure, it was probably a bidding war gone a bit mad, but it still ended at 59.00, and I didn't hesitate to point that out. And I agree with Funk Buddy
