Of the DOnkey Kong Country trilogy, which one is your fav and is the most polished and perfect of the series?

(I apologize if this topic was done before, I couldn't find an older topic of just the DKC games)

EDIT: Title made more clear, Poll added for fun factor. -GAC

Original DKC was and still is my favorite of the series.

Definitly DKC1 for me as well. I don't care much for 3 at all.

I love them all, but I feel that DKC2 is the best. It's got the most creative level design (both in how they look and how they play), it's challenging, has the best music, and the graphics are better than the original (and fairly on par with DKC3). And even though Donkey Kong is fun to play just because he's a legend, I think Diddy and Dixie make the best pair when it comed to versatility.

Donkey Kong Country 3 for me. The third time really is the charm. DKC 2 is my least favorite, but still pretty good. I have all three on the SNES and I even have the GBA ports of 1 and 2, and plan to get the GBA port of 3 whenever I find a copy priced as cheaply as I got the other two. I think they did a pretty good job with the GBA ports; imo, the presentation is similar to that of a special-edition DVD.

The GBC port was interesting tech-wise, but since the GBA port was released, there's really no reason to play it.

DKC1 for me, it has a fantastic atmosphere, I just like all the scenes. One of the very best video games ever for me (says one who doesn't care for 16 bit consoles usually) :)

i misread the topic and was about to go on a nice long rant about how much i love Donkey Kong 94 on the Gameboy.

...then i realized this was about donkey kong country. in which case, it's the first one for me. my girlfriend and i were actually just playing this game earlier in the week. i've played a bit of 2 and 3, but never to completion... then again, i never had 2 or 3 when i was a kid, but i did have the first one, so nostalgia might be a factor there too.

anyway, long story short.... DKC1 \m/

ditto, an instant classic, the second game however, was close on my list, but the third, I own, yet never played it.

I had to vote for DKC 3... I loved that game... I played DKC 1 and 2 lots, but the level design and challenges that DKC 3 had, made it more fun for me... I will say that the helicopter spin of Kiddy was part of the fun for me.

It was a tough choice though.. I loved played all 3 tons... My wife likes 2 more than 3 but hey it's my vote and DKC 3 is the best SNES game ever in my opinion.

By the way... Great topic...

Like the first one for SNES most :)
Have never played the third though.

My order would go:

Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country 3
Donkey Kong Country 2

All three fo the games are good but the first one is just a classic and I will never get tired of it. It probably has something to do with the fact that when I was a kid, I only owned number one and never had the priveledge of playing the other two.

I find Donkey Kong Country 2 reallllly hard. This summer I tried playing through it and I got to one of the last worlds and the levels were really getting crazy. It's still good, but I just found myself so frustrated in the later stages of that game.

DKC 1 is the best. You can't go wrong with DONKEY KONG! LOL
I never could get into 2 & 3 like I did 1. I still remember carrying my
SNES to school in my backpack and hooking it up in the computer lab
to play DKC. Even the teacher was impressed by that game.
Regardless of what the kid in Billy Madison said, Donkey Kong does
NOT suck! :D

Yeah has to be DKC1 since you actually get to play as Donkey Kong. Well sorta since its cranky kong is suppose to be the original. At least he has the same name and looks like him.

I prefer the first one...partly because it actually has Donkey Kong in it but I just love the game overall. I actually managed to beat it, too. I also find DKC2 pretty hard. I've not tried DKC3 yet...guess I'll have to try it soon. I was kind of holding off on it until I beat the 2nd one but...

Wow. I can't decide on just one; I like all three. I found the first one as the easiest and the second one as the hardest though.

Some of those bonus stages were near impossible to find without a guide, same for the DK coins. But I still kept playing and playing, and that's when you know a game is fun. :)

Donkey Kong Country 2 owned. DKC was boring in comparison.

Donkey Kong Country 2
Donkey Kong Country 3
Donkey Kong Country

DKC didn't have bonus coins, DK coins, lost worlds or anything. Thusly, it was very short. DKC2 had the best level design, and the Dixie was way better than Donkey's slow ass.

no question about it ~ Donkey Kong Country 2, the best out if whole trilogy, has still one of my very favorite soundtracks of all time.

For right now (At Krazy Kremland) I'm not finding DKC2 not all that hard, except for getting to some Bonus Barrels and hero Coins. DKC3 is the one that really upped the ante on difficulty, especially Razor Ridge's boss.

I remember as a kid the lightning stage in DKC3 seemed excruciatingly difficult, but I breezed through it quite easily a couple years ago when I replayed the game again. Similarly, I remember the sea urchin boss being way more difficult too.

On the subject of DKC3, one of the things I found most disappointing about it was that the music wasn't even a fraction as good as in DKC2, or even DKC. The explanation behind the change was that the first game had a few different composers, with Dave Wise doing the most songs, then Dave Wise, the most talented of Rare's musicians, did all of the music in DKC2, but DKC3 had an entirely different composer. The result wasn't necessarily bad, but DKC3's soundtrack just wasn't very memorable. What's interesting, though, is that the GBA version of DKC3 has a brand new soundtrack, all by Dave Wise. I've yet to get the GBA game myself, but it's definitely something to take note of by anyone who enjoys the music from the series.

DKC1 by far. I finally was able to beat it in 52 minutes all the way through. Next would have to be #2 and then #3. DKC2 does get pretty hard towards the end but I find myself liking that :) Number 3 was just too easy IMO.

It gets harder after that. Wait until you reach K. Rool's Keep - there are some tough levels there - Castle Crush, Toxic Tower, Chain-Link Chamber...

Ok, number 1 had the big WOW factor with the graphics and all, and it was a very fun game, I've definitely played it the most. But I'm going to have to vote for 2 because it provides the most challenge and I still play it today. DKC3 however I am not a fan of.

Donkey Kong Country did have a wow factor, but Donkey Kong Country 2 just had more of everything: better graphics, better sound, more levels, better levels, more enemies, more clever level designs, etc. I haven't played much of DKC3, but the first two worlds didn't really match up to DKC2. DKC2 for the win.

It's been awhile since I played 1, but does it sometimes seem like there's too few playing levels in the areas of DKC2 and 3 (I forget exactly with 3 for sure)?

I also thought part 2 was the best in the trilogy. Rare just made too many improvements plus both Diddy and Dixie were interesting and quick characters to use.

I've been replaying these games lately, and I thought I'd share some thoughts.

DK Country - Legendary game, I feel so much nostalgia playing it. Strangely, it is the only game in the trilogy that lets you play as Donkey Kong himself, which makes it feel pretty special. Diddy is a great character, I'm glad he's managed to stay alive and kicking throughout the years. In fact, I like all of the Kong characters in this game, especially Cranky (the OG Donkey Kong). The level design is solid. Aside from the mine cart parts, most of the levels are pretty standard to the platformer genre (jungle, cave, ice level, etc.) but they're varied enough that I don't mind. The music is really good, a lot of the tracks such as Jungle Japes and Aquatic Ambiance have become classics. The only bad things about the game are the comically easy boss fights and the lack of the hidden coins and such that were in the other two games.

DKC2- Usually considered the best of the three for a multitude of reasons. The level design is pure genious, the soundtrack is like sex for your ears, and the team of Diddy and Dixie is the most fun and versatile. Unlike the first, the game has boss fights that don't suck, and the additions of the DK coins and the lost world made you replay the game until you knew each level like the back of your hand. The game has an overall pirate theme which is pulled off quite nicely and manages to be present throughout the game without limiting its variety. There is really nothing negative I can say about the game.

DKC3 - Released at the end of the SNES's lifecycle and is often forgotten. While Kiddy isn't necessarily a bad character like some would say, he is definitely less interesting than Donkey, Diddy, and Dixie. Nintendo seems to have pretty much forgotten about him too. DKC3 is by far the wackiest of the series, with bananna birds, gimmicky levels (running from a giant saw in a vertically scrolling stage, a level where you get an enemy as a pet who you have to keep feeding or he eats you, a rocket ship stage), and other generally strange things. The overworld that you can freely explore is kinda cool, and the trading sequences with the Bear brothers are nice little sidequests. The music, while still good, is the weakest of the three, though some songs like Rockface Rumble are among the best of the series. Level design is great, though not as good as that in DKC2. The boss battles are probably the best of the trilogy, with the over-the-shoulder snowball fight against a psychotic snowman being one of my personal favorites. There are lots of things to collect, and the flag system that was included makes it easy to quickly understand what you still need to find in each stage.

I can't really decide which one I like best, there are great things about all of them. Hopefully we'll see a number 4 someday, but I'm not holding my breath.

I have to agree, as much as I love the first DKC, the second one is such a great game. I actually played all the way through the second game for the first time just a couple months ago and its one of the best games I've played in recent memory.

I chose number 3 because it was the first of the three games I played. I was only 9 in 1996 and my uncle had this. After he beat it he let me borrow it. I was a big fan of Donkey Kong games ever since. I beat it and had to give it back, but I got DKC2 for the Christmas after. I got my own DKC3 with my next birthday's money and went on vacation to a relative's in California where I saw DKC for the first time.

Realizing it was good as well, I added that to my list of wants and got it for my 11th birthday, a whole year later. Donkey Kong got skipped that Christmas in between because I got my Game Boy Pocket instead.

So these events made me experience the series backwards. Not the ideal situation as I like to play series in order, but each game is nice as you have different combinations of characters each time around.

I'm one of the fans that actually would like to see Kiddy Kong make a return to the series in 3D, even if it's just another racing game that actually includes him this time. Chunky was left out of Barrel Blast as well which puzzles me.

DKC3's my favorite. I know it's the least popular, but I really think that they improved with each one... each game has even more interesting and varied gameplay than the last, improved graphics (particularly noticeable when going from the first game to the second, but the third did improve things too), etc. The soundtracks of all three are fantastic. All three are great games, but I do like the more varied gameplay of the second and particularly third games... you could call DKC3's levels often gimmicky, but I'd call them unique and interesting. I like the varied challenges with plenty of secrets and stuff to get, instead of always just having to get to the end and find the hidden areas along the way, like you do in the first game. :)

Oh, and I also liked the much more forgiving save system that let you leave a zone for the overworld, so you didn't have to get through an area all the way to the savepoint without getting game over (and if you get game over, start the whole area over from the beginning!). That was nice. The bosses in the first game are also way too easy... a few of the levels were tough (the ice world had me stuck for quite a while), but the bosses... not so much.

But yeah, all three games are fantastic.

That's true, the soundtrack of the second DKC game was definately the best. It was all beautful and memorable. I must say I liked some of the soundtracks in Donkey Kong Country 3, too. Cascade Capers is my favorite soundtrack in the third DKC game.

If there will be a DKC4 someday and it won't be developed by Rare, then I won't get it. If it will be by Rare, I'll get it for sure. Oh, and David Wise will have to be involved. Otherwise it wouldn't be a real DKC game.
