So I had Dragon Quest VIII and I just got the Limited Edition with the cardboard box. They are the exact same though (as far as I can tell). I have the Star Ocean Limited Edition as well, and I know that it's different than the normal version, both in content and appearance. Am I missing something, or are both DQs the same?

I could have sworn DQ8 was only released in the "limited edition".

I bought this new the other day for $19.99 at Gamestop and it was the cardboard box version. I think when the game fist came out that it did not have the cardboard though.

ahh, well that would explain it then. I never thought of that. I got the first copy off of ebay, so it's very feasible that the seller had just lost the box. Great, thanks for the help!

So what's the difference between the two? just the box?

If there is a difference, it's probably just the presence of a Final Fantasy 12 demo (in the original release). I don't know if newer ones ship with that, as much closer to FF12's release as it is.

Both Star Ocean and DQ VIII (and Syphon Filter: Omega Strain) came with a cardboard slipcover. They hold the same stuff and there is no difference to the games or anything else other than the fact that there is a cardboard slipcover. Star Ocean eventually came out without them, but all the copies I've ever seen of DQ VIII all have had the slipcover (except for those that are on the shelves for display since EB/GS took the slipcover off)

At best its just a notation that you bought the game (or got one) that was a 'first print' release. It doesn't do anything to the value except to the RPG/Hardcore collector who might want one with the slip cover.

I'm playing through it right now. Mine has the cardboard box as well. As far as I know, it only comes this way. With the box is the only way I have seen it in stores.

It has never been released without the cardboard box. The game still comes in my geo shipments in the cardboard box. Star Ocean though defenitely seemed limited. The greatest hits come without a cardboard box now, and they have the manual shrinkwrapped inside. I think it's the manual anyhow, could be something extra...I guess it's too big for the case??

GTA San Andreas had a similar cardboard box. I guess it's just to make the titles stand out on shelves.

Not in this case. Dragon Quest 8 and Star Ocean came with boxes to accommodate for the 2 discs + the large manual. Sony US doesn't allow 2 discs to be included + an instruction manual in a regular sized DVD case. It's one of Sony's bizarre rules that publishers love. Atlus has openly criticized this rule several times over the years.

Dragon Quest has never been released in anything other than the "limited edition" box. Let's just make that clear.

That would just be a display case. Thats not how ANY GTA has ever been sold here in America.

Yeah, I've gotten all the PS2 GTA games day one and none of them have had a cardboard slipcover.

The US Special Edition of GTA San Andreas for PS2 did come with a cardboard slipcover. I saw it several times at Circuit City and Shopko.

That is not correct. There are 2-disc PS2 games out there that come in a single case, such as:

Devil May Cry 2
Cy Girls
Growlanser Generations (standalone retail, not deluxe)
Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams

That's not all of them, but all I could think of off the top of my head.

The outer cardboard box is used when the manual is too thick to fit in the normal case. The original release of Star Ocean: TtEoT has 2 manuals, hence the outer box.

Perhaps you're thinking of the Special Edition (http://ps2.ign.com/objects/773/773077.html)? It wasn't in the standard case, more like a cardboard fold-out kind of deal, the only one of its kind.

Ah...we can't edit. The packaging of the SE of San Andreas was all cardboard...inside of a slipcover.

Maybe I should have clarified that the rule is for large manuals (or two in Star Ocean's case). Sony's rule has also been discussed in depth at the Working Designs message boards (not sure if those boards even exist anymore). The first time I heard about it was right before Growlanser was released.
