Ok, now this is what I'm talking about. This is what I've wanted for a long time. I'm tired of all the tired gaming cliches. Aliens, monsters, dragons, blah, blah, blah. This looks like some cool shit.
Go to www.gamevideos.com and search for TGS: Africa Trailer HD
Then prepare to remove your jaw from the floor. :eek 2:

That looks good but is any of it actual gameplay? I saw two scenes that I thought might be, the rest just looked like movie. I holding a lot of my PS3 opinions for until I play with a store demo. These vids can be decieving someimes. I'll bet it looks great, that's what it's designed for. I can't tell what kind of game it even is though. I need to know how it will play and control. Pretty is meaningless if it's not fun.
We'll see later I guess, cause all I can do now is that.... guess.

This is a game that really stood out for me. I still don't know what is real-time, and what is pre-rendered, but it looks to fulfill what Sony promises. Even if the in-game graphics don't match this level yet, they will. I think we're going to see some tremendous leaps in graphics over the next few years, once developers really get to grips with the technology.
The question, of course, is who will actually be able to achieve those level of performance? Will studios have to spend $20 million on a game project, and will this only be the domain of the three largest publishers?
I'm looking forward to seeing more of Afrika. Please, please, please don't let this be another crappy FPS.

True. Very hard to say what the heck the premise of the game is. I just hope you can actually be the animals, and that you aren't some dumb as human hunter or something. Being able to be a cheetah or a lion would be pretty damn fun. Of course, it could get really boring really fast, but whatever the case may be, this is probably the most interesting PS3 game that I've seen so far. I've always liked the games that let you control an animal character, going all the way back to games like Ecco the Dolphin and Jurassic Park for the Genesis (you could play as the Raptor). Playing as an animal on the African plains would be pretty damn cool, of course, it could also get really boring too. But man, the visuals are absolutely unreal. Those Zebra's really look like real Zebra's. I actually got my wife to come over and take a look at this video, and she thought I was lying when I told her it was a video game. When she saw the Hyenas, she said, "Ok, maybe that is a video game, but those Zebra's are real".
The big downside, is at the very end of the video, it shows a human dude in the jeep, and unfortunately, I'm thinking that you are actually a human in this game and maybe you can't control the animals. That would kinda suck. There is also that one part where the Rhino charges at the camera, and that could be like a first person mode as a human or something. Maybe like Jurassic Park for the Genesis, they will let you control a human or one of the animals. I've seen another older video of Africa, and at the very end, it gives you an extremely brief glimpse of a Lion, and it's absolutely spine tingling! Man, to play as a real life Lion, in charge of your pride on the open plains of Africa. That would be pretty damn sweet.
I guess we will just have to wait and see with this one. Sony did show it as the ending to their TGS press conference, so it must be a really huge game for them. Hopefully the developers will be given the time needed to make this game special. According to IGN, Rhino Studios is a Japanese developer founded in April 2005 by former Data East and SEGA staffers, contracted by Sony Computer Entertainment to make it's first project, the PS3 game "Afrika". It also says that Sony Computer Entertainment's Daisaku Ikejiri has a hand in the game's development. Ikejiri previously worked as producer on Hot Shots Golf 3, 4, Portable and Online. So it looks like they have some talented devleopers working on this.

The zebras blew..... my mind, that is!
I really wasn't that impressed by the screens of the hippos that were posted earlier but this video is MUCH better than those. Of course, it all felt pre-rendered rather than real-time so I'm still a little skeptical.
It also seems like it's going to be a FPS. I think the "k" in Afrika gives that away.

Yeah, wasn't impressed by the screenshots but the video was amazing. Its the animation which is really good. The hippos still look horrible as do a couple of the other things. A few things look cut out and stuck on. The backgrounds don't look good either. But it was like watching a nature show. Don't care for that fast paced actiony bit or the jeep at the end. C'mon Sony, you have the potential to do a Nintendo and capture some untapped market here if you make the right kind of game in that setting with those visuals + animation.

A FPS developed in Japan...what are the odds of that? No-one would buy it in Japan. No way.
And those are clearly pre-rendered (and clearly directed) clips.

I can't say why but the elephants caught my eye more than the zebras did as for as looking very good. The Hyenas looked the worse to me and I thought they might be actual gameplay. Also the charging Rhino was making me think actual gamplay was you as a human in first person in the vane of Jurassic Park on the Sega CD. Maybe like you're a ranger who has to care for animals or a photographer/nature show host? I've scene no indication that your role is violent. Still too many questions.

This game looks really interesting to me, perhaps because i cant tell what type of game it is, could be a standard genre, or something entirely unique. Maybe you get to play the life of any animal you choose, hunting prey, raising offspring etc.
To be honest this one mysterious game has me more interested than anything ive seen on 360 or Wii, because it holds the possibility of some genuine different gameplay.

Afaik Afrika is some sort of wildlife simulator. You can travel around in Africa with car or plane (possibly by foot too) and watch the animals etc.

Well if that's all it is I'd say it's a waste. I don't care how good the graphics are if it's just looking at animals with no play. What would be a better Idea would be a Zoo Tycoon game that had these kind of graphics but gave you somethign to do, designing the habitats and taking care of things, all the while looking at these encredible visuals. That would be much cooler. We'll have to wait and see if better gameplay is revealed in the near future.

Some of those animals were done well (elephants for example) but the animation for running animals (cheetah & Hyena) didn't look so smooth.
I'm sure its something that will be worked out, but it's something that really needs to be addressed.

I think as long as the game is relatively unique the graphics alone could make up for any downfalls. Then again the graphics could be worse with the actual release because thats what happened with metal gear solid but the game was still great so nobody complainded.

That's really funny! LOL
You know, the only way I think this game could be interesting if you are a human instead of the animals, is maybe if you are like part of a Kenya Wildlife Preservation team or something, and you have to defend the animals against poachers and stuff like that. Like there will be these bad guys trying to hunt the elephants for their tusks, and you have to go around and make sure the animals are protected from the illegal hunting. Also, while you are doing that, you could also be thrown into certain situations in which you are being attacked by a very dangerous animal, and you have to defend yourself just to survive. Of course, there would have to be alot of extra shit thrown in to make it captivating enough to stick with it for a lengthy time, but I don't think it would be too bad.
Like you could get a message that there is a lion cub that has a broken leg, and you have to get that cub from it's pride, so that you can take it to the local animal hospital, so they can repair the leg, cause the animal would otherwise die. Of course the problem is that the other lions wouldn't understand why you are trying to take their cub, so you have to defend yourself against attack. You know, shit like that.
I would much rather have the ability to live as one of the animals, and to go on hunts, and be required to mate during mating season, etc, etc. Of course, they would have to make it so that time would move much faster, otherwise it would get boring as fuck, no matter how good the graphics and atmosphere is.
You know, if these guys hired me, I could come up with the perfect setup. I would let you play as any of the various animals. If you are any of the animals, they have their own objectives and goals that you would have to complete. Also, you could choose to be the wildlife preserve dude, and if you are him, then you get his tasks to complete. You would also have the choice of playing the role of the poachers. You have to kill elephants to get the tusk, and you have to get away with it, without getting caught, etc, etc. And then they could also give you the option of being some super wealthy wanna be safari dude, that is in Africa, just trying to hunt big game. So there could be like 8 different playable animals, and like 3 different playable human characters and depending on who you choosed to control, your objectives and goals would change, and you would only win the game, when you won each persons objective, including all the animals. That would be sweet as fuck. They should hire me.

The killzone video that had everyone sweating the ps3 and hateing the 360 before its launch even though the hardcore new it was all nonplayable and smoke and mirrors. Yet coming off like this is what you are getting and then pulling a no show at this years e3 and downplaying graphics over innovation. Clearly knowing that killzone and the ps3 will never live up to the hype.

I thought u was thinking of that, but i had to ask since you used the word fiasco. Fiasco means a HUGE mistake or failure, a disaster. What Sony did is something i would categorize as a minor mistake. It wasnt that hard to see that the movie was pre-rendered so even after the revealing it wasnt really a big suprise.
I dont see how the Killzone 2 movie made people hate 360. Even so, its their problem, not Sony's. If you check the in-game clips of Resistance you will see that the PS3 can produce about the same quality as the pre-renedered Killzone 2 movie. No in-game movies from Killzone 2 yet, but it will be sweet, i can guarantee that :)

uh...i saw assloads of jaggies. does sony STILL not believe in anti-aliasing?
agreed on the "where's the gameplay?" sentiment as well. I'm all for virtual "toys" and all but this doens't seem THAT interesting. If it was a hyperrealistic "be animal x and surive" or hunting thing maybe it would get inteteresting but...so far this doesn't seem too awesome to me personally.
offtopic, I still want a "mythical creature hunter" or maybe "endangered species hunter".

No matter what the graphics look like, you have to ask yourself what the gameplay is like. If it is a sort of non-game like Animal Crossing or Nintendogs, you could say that it doesn't interest me in any way. What is the point of having pretty graphics if you don't do anything with them?
However, if it turned out to be something like Pokemon Snap, it might be worth a look.

I think gfx wise KZ2 will be simular to Resistance, if not better. See if you can find some videos of Resistance if you havnt seen it yet. I agree that its wierd that there is no KZ2 videos yet. Its over 1 year since the first video was shown.
From what i've seen Ridge Racer 7, Motorstorm, Afrika, Resistance and Heavy Rain impressed me alot. I also keep in mind that these are launch titles, which usualy are "crappy" gfx wise compared to the games that will come out in 2-3 years.

AWESOME!! AWESOME!!! AWESOME!!!!
It sounds like my dream for what Afrika should be like is actually going to turn into reality!!!! Man, I can't wait to see this at TGS!!! AMAZING!!!
Why I'm so excited:
This is strictly a rumour but since there's basically nothing known about Afrika yet I figure it's worth a read. This was posted on NeoGAF and then quickly deleted.
I think I'd better clear up what Afrika will ACTUALLY be like.
Essentially, it's a sandbox/action/adventure/role-playing game set in (you guessed it) Africa. The game simulates a large ecosystem, with everything that entails. Predators prey, other animals eat plant life, and various areas can be stripped of resources.
The big idea with Afrika is that you can jump into any animal at virtually any time. You jump into a gazelle, and you'll do various missions (escape from predators, distract predators so other herd members can escape, find food through exploration, find and attract mates, etc.). As you complete these missions, you'll gain Survival Points. These don't directly improve your animal, but if you mate, your offspring will be superior (in ways you can control using these Survival Points). This will continue until you've finished all the missions and maxed out a particular species, in which case you can keep playing in a more free-form, sandbox style.
Of course, each animal will have different playstyles and challenges. Predators are probably the most fun. You'll have to deal with pack dynamics and of course you'll need to hunt. Flying and aquatic creatures are also cool, with some pretty unique missions that I can't talk about. In general, if you've played the old "Wolf" or "Lion" PC games, you'll have a very rough idea of Afrika, only this game is massively, massively evolved.
The whole "you photograph things as a human" comes from the fact that you can control humans as a species. It's not at all the sole focus of the game, but another set of quests based around photography, exploration, and (later on) survival. The whole mat thing is complete BS, by the way.
But yeah, while I've already revealed too many details, I think people will be blown away once they get a chance to see this game in action.

That sounds interesting... we'll have to see how it pans out! :)

Thankfully it sounds like this won't be an African hunting game. That was my first thought when I saw the previews last year. The gameplay concept sounds so bizarre. I hope it works.

I hope one can perform the mating process, like a mini-game.

In case you don't want to wait that long, just get the Chinese/Hong Kong version which is called Hakuna Matata. It's entirely in English.

Hakuna Matata is a much better name than Afrika.
Also. There's another Sony game that involves the exact same thing but underwater.

I think I'd rather have a re-release of Pokemon Snap with trophy support. <_<

Atleast in this game you can actually drive around in your vehincle and get out and take pictures, instead of being forced to go around the same area repeatedly. Or the last stage which you go in a straight line and the only picture you can take is Mew I think(yes, I've beaten Pokemon Snap to completion.)
I wonder when you're out of your vehicle taking pictures, can you get eaten by a lion or tiger? It'd also be cool if you can run into animals with the car.

You can get "trampled" by an animal, but you just black out and wake up back in your home camp.

When you put it like that, it does sound better than Pokemon Snap. I'm always keeping an eye out for oddball games, so I may end up getting this after all.

Hakuna Matata full English version is at Play-Asia for 29.99

If you're one of those people who would rather have trophy versions then you might want to wait for the US version which will probably have trophy support added.

Really? I thought this game had fallen off the radar. I didn't even see any advertisements for it in this weeks paper.

Yes, really. It was supposed to be a September release, but they pushed it back.
As far as not seeing it advertised, I haven't either. I guess they're not pushing it very hard. It will be here though.

Not that one review is the end-all, be-all, but IGN really makes the game sound not very good.
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/103/1032352p1.html
And it's not that they're too hip to get the concept. They point out many things that could've made the game a lot better, and it's worrying me a bit.

I am interested, but not enough to buy it. If we get it for review, I will play it, but beyond a bargin bin purchase, there is simply too much other stuff out right now.

This would have been a great launch (or near it) title. Now? Not so much. I see it getting ignored fairly easily.

Funny enough, it was the first PS3 title we ever saw. I figured it would have been a launch title.

Pretty much every single score except IGNs averages out slightly above 7/10. Seven other reviews and none of them score it below a 7/10(even Eurogamer,) while 1up scores it slightly higher. IGN's score is 3.5/10, seems out of place.

I'm going to agree with you here. I'd go as far as to say it seems negatively biased. His complaints about the graphics contradict what we see in the videos from that very site. Same thing about the controls... moving the camera around doesn't appear sluggish at all. The thought of "LOL Nothing's happening!!!" you see on the images he posted seems to be nitpicky... the African plains aren't densely populated. It seems like the reviewer watches the Discovery Channel all the time, and unfairly expects it to be polygon-perfect.

$49.99? Pfft. I'll wait until it hits $10-20. It's a Natsume title so it's sure to hit bargin bins before Christmas.

This game probably won't win any awards, but for the love of God at least it not another FPS or RPG....and I like both of those genres. Please keep developing non-mainstream games for those of us who actually get bored with the same crap over and over.....

Just an FYI, the game has been delayed again to next Tuesday. First it was supposed to come out a week ago Tuesday, then this Tuesday, now next Tuesday. I don't know what the hold-up is for a game that was translated into English at least a year ago.
And now the game is being released on the same day as Uncharted 2. Most PS3 owners are going to pick Uncharted 2 over friggin Afrika. Myself included. Sorry, Afrika. You had your chance. Now you are falling down the priority list. I may just wait for it to drop in price at this rate.
