I just bought an asteroids in great shape, but a long trip away. I thought about having it shipped door-to-door, but I imagine that would be a pricy and risky method. So, I will travel a great gistance in my pickup and bring it back myself. I will first wrap it in warehoude plastic sheeting (saran wrap heavy duty) to keep it dry and tight.
But what would be the best way to haul it....upright or layed down flat? Upright is going to be slamming the wind a long way, but it was meant to be carried upright. Laying down flat on it's back or side would provide much greater stability, but will all the braces and brackets hold up in that position. I sure don't want to tear anything up!!
So, to all you arcade movers, what is my best method to move this beasty? Any insights concerning safety for the unit would be greatly appreciated! I FINALLY GOT AN ORIGINAL NICE ASTEROIDS!!!!.

Well, I would say you want to move it upright, as that is the way it was meant to stay. Laying it flat IS a possibility, just remember, you'll be bouncing everything around inside in a way it was not meant to be. Also, it's very possible to damage the monitor that way, because the back of the monitor will be closest to the floor. Hit a really good bump/pothole, whack the back of the tube, and no more Asteroids. When you move it upright, put the back of the machine facing the front of your truck, so that a.Wind/bugs/rocks,etc are hitting the BACK of the machine (which is easiest to repair damage if it occurs) and, b. Everyone behind you can see how cool you are to be riding around with an Asteroids machine. LOL I use ratcheting straps to move my equipment, works out very well. What you can also do is place a blanket/quilt between your truck and the back of the machine for extra protection.(I am assuming that you have some kind of a rack on your truck to tie down to.) If your truck is just a pickup with nothing to tie down to, I would suggest a u-Haul or Ryder, just because it has capability to tie the machine in snug. Last thing you want is your machine either bouncing along happily with you down the road, or worse, rocking side to side through all the corners (had them fall like this in the past....sob). Anyways, I hope this helps somewhat.

Since you said that you were going to wrap it it will be just fine on its side. Always drive more cautiously too. I have moved 2 cabs this way and each was not damaged, even the side art wasn't scratched(but I do have a after market bed liner that is real slippry in the truck). Not to mention with the acade upright it would create more wind resistense and worse gas milage.

If you smack the back of the monitor in this manner, then you have a lot of other problems going on. Like a monitor that isn't bolted down or you're driving like a maniac.

I've never moved an Asteroids, but I wouldn't anticipate an issue transporting it on its back (I've moved the majority of my collection this way). Plus it is about 100 times easier to get the machine in and out of the truck bed without a lift gate (in = tip and push in...out = push out and tip upwards...check the older thread on this subject for more info). Bring moving mats, tie her down, make sure stuff that isn't bolted rides with you in the cab, etc, etc, etc.
