question about earthbound for snes

i bought a used copy of earthbound and and went to delete a game that was at lvl 25. When i had the "are you sure" screen pop up, i actually noticed the lvl was 255. So of course i tried it out. the game was at the start but i had a maxed out ness with 255 stats and 153 hp and 153 pp points. Anyone know how this happened?

My guess? Game Genie.

1. Use Game Genie with Earthbound inserted, with stats pumped up.
2. Save game to cartridge.
3. Stats are saved -- no more use for a Game Genie.

I've done it w/o GG. I used to play that game so much, it was insane.

one of the basic codes in the code book was to start at level 255, amusingly the code only worked on certain revisions of the game (didn't work on mine)
