Since joining these forums i've been reading alot about this console. I just did some reading on wikipedia etc and i'm kinda interested in one now.

I think it wasn't a big succes in Europe or i was too young and to focused on my nes.

I'm still stuck with some questions..There are multiple variations of this console but which one would be the best for me to get? Does the console have a territory lockout? If yes how do i remove it because i want to play japanese and american games.

And ofcourse what are the first games i should get :P

I believe the TurboGrafx (Europe), TurboGrafx-16 (USA), and PC Engine (Japan) all have regional lockout of sorts, but there are adapters you can buy. As far as which system you should buy...get whichever one you can find in your area.

If you want to go completely legit, my recommendation is a PC Engine Duo-R or RX and a US Turbo Grafx-16.

If you want all American and Japanese games in one, just get either the US Duo or the Japanese Duo with whatever adapter you need for the Hucard slot. CD games don't have any regional lockout, but you do want to take note that if you plan to play the Arcade CD games, you'll need your card slot to be able to use the Japanese arcade card.

I just got a Japanese PCE Duo-R a couple of weeks back. From the reading I've done, this is the way to go. You won't be able to play US HuCard games without modding it, but you won't be missing much. Most of the HuCard games aren't very text-heavy, and a large majority of the RPGs and such are on CDs, which means you can play it on any Duo console (or PCE console with a CD add-on).

You'll pay $200 US or more if you go through the usual route, but I've been having a great time so far. ^^

Cheapest way to go is an American TG-16, with a region mod. This way you can play US and Japanese Hu cards, and later on, if you feel like you want to plunge into the world of Turbo further, you can get the Arcade Card Pro, which is actually cheaper than a System 3.0 card, and the TG-16 CD attatchment. The nice thing about this combo, is that it allows you to play US hu cards, Japanese hu cards, US CD's, Japanese CD's, US Super CD's, Japanese Super CD's, and Japanese Arcade CD's. The only thing it won't let you play is the handful of SuperGrafx hu cards. (which is probably way overrated anyways).

But the nice thing about this type of setup, is that you can build it as you move along. So you can just start off with an American TG-16, and don't do anything to it. Then, when you feel it's right, get it region modded. I highly recommend getting the RGB mod at the same time you get the region mod. Somebody can hook you up so you can use the Turbo on a Euro TV with Scart input. Make sure to get the RGB mod done on the side of the unit though, if you decide to do that. Because later if you get the CD add on, it attaches onto the back, so you need the RGB mod on the side so that the CD games will be in RGB as well.

Also, if you want the ability to play backups on CD-R, which is nice considering the prices of some of the better CD games, the TG-16 with the CD attatchment seems to be more CD-R friendly than any other configuration. There are people on here that will argue that, but from what I know, the CD attachment is better for CD-R compatibility.

Personally I use a modded Duo R that plays both regions and has a very nice blue LED. It is easily my favorite console ever.

If you want to get your engine modded, or want to buy a modded engine straight up I would recommend talking to D-Lite, the man who modded my system. At the moment he's a little hard to get a hold of because I think he's moving right now, but he is a top notch seller, I bought a PCE Core II, a Sega Saturn, A Waku Waku 7 MVS cart, and about 15 or so hu cards from him through 3 different orders. His service is always top notch. His website should be www.multimods.com.

Good luck getting a nice system. I think you will enjoy what the PCE world has to offer.

Is there a site that actually describes the region mod rather than trying to get people to buy it? I haven't found anything with a quick Google search. I've been looking for a good condition Core Grafx for a bit now, but a modded TG-16 would hold me over.

It wasn't legally released in Europe actually, the TG16 was released via the black market in small quanities...

A lovely system by far and highly recommended.
