View Full Version : Silent Hill skyrocketing prices - why?

I'm completely befuddled by the prices Silent Hill - the original PSX game - is fetching on eBay and amongst collectors. A great game, don't get me wrong. But it isn't exactly "rare," as it went to a Greatest Hits print run. But even THAT version is getting $30-$40 bucks easily.

So share some theories. Not too long ago, you could walk into any Gamestop and pick up a used copy for less than $15. But recently, prices have exploded for this game, and I just don't know what happened. Surely it couldn't have been hype from the movie that bumped it...

Heh...my local Blockbuster had a pile of new GH Silent Hills for 1.99 a couple months ago. I'll have to go see about that.

True story...I traded sumguy a boxed Atari Jaguar for his PS1 Tactics Ogre a couple years ago. Anyway he thought this was a great score for him and he felt bad so he gave me a free shot at his trade box. So I took a new Silent Hill...and he laughed. ;)

Yes, it's because of the movie. The new SH game that is coming to the PSP is also helping.

It's the same reason why FF7, a game that sold even MORE copies than SH, sells for $80. Even the Greatest Hits version.

Yea, but the SH Movie affected all Silent Hill games, well except 4. Gamestop/EB has Silent Hill 2 a 19.99 game and Silent Hill 3 a 29.99 game last time I saw, which was last week.

Both were under $15 before the movie.

Silent Hill didn't do amazing at the box office but ANYONE that saw it that also plays games decided to get the games after it came out, it's that simple.

The movie also reached the attention of non-gamers that wanted to know more about the game. When they are shopping along with collectors demand will rise.

Wow, I didn't realise that. That's just messed up, I don't like that. I've been wanting the game for years and for some reason it's been dried up around here and just can't find the original. Good thing the main shop I go to doesn't look at eBay for PS1 prices.

6 months ago I walked into an EB Games and bought a complete SH non-GH for 10 bucks :)

Lucky... it was one of the only great PSX games I was missing and it was about to skyrocket in price thanks to the movie.

I bought a non-GH Silent Hill last week at Gamestop for $7.99. I guess I got lucky on that deal. I lent my copy of SH out about 5 years ago and never got it back, I think the time has come that I get it back :)

Yea it's definetly cuz of the movie, and with the popularity plus the combination of very few stores even carrying psx games = high ebay prices. I'm sure it'll eventually die down again.

Thats insane. Then again Marvel vs. Capcom 1&2 as well as seaman and dreamcast have been going for insane prices lately.

Seaman really I remember trading that game in and getting absolutely nothing for it wow times have changed. I do have MVC2 for the DC and I know I am sitting on some cash there so its all good

Just as with Final Fantasy VII right now, Silent Hill will drop back down to the $10 value where it belongs soon enough. As for Seaman, it's always been worth $5 - $10, even now. Dunno why you think it's worth big money. :hmm:

Yeah I nearly laughed when I saw MVC1 sell for $54 the other day..

As for Silent Hill, going for the most overrated price that could well match FF7 by far.

Isn't it still like $7.99 at GameStop/Eb Games if you find it?

Cause I have checked ebay recently, I too traded in seaman and marvel vs capcom 1&2 like an idiot a long time ago. Of course at that time they were very easy to get and stores were selling them cheap. Seaman is going higher based on recent ebay prices. I think my other mistake was also trading in project justice(which i think was used toward RE remake). I really am kicking myself in the ass for selling them.

My mistake, just checked its going normal price now. Guess it was cause they didnt have many copies of seaman that week.

Yes. Yes. Yes.

Except that damn FF now isn't going down and Advent Children has been out for a while. I really don't get it except that since GameStop/EB has stopped selling/buying PS games this is appearing to dry-up the availibility of the games in the minds of these yahoo's that are spending so much to get them now.

Just proves that there's even more Noobs on Ebay than we thought. Makes me happy I have a sealed GH FF7 from K Mart for $15, and Original SH form Good Will for $2.99.

This is becoming ridiculous. Buy and selling games has become more like the commodities market. Everyone is speculating and hoarding games hoping to see which game will be the next big "hit". I know the movie made it desireable again but makes you wonder who these people on ebay are that are paying these prices.

A few months ago konamistyle.com was still selling the GH for $20 new. I wanted to buy it so bad, but didn't have a job yet. Then I got my job and somehow forgot about it... of course, now the site has no more. :embarrassed:
