Let's just hope it's multiplayer over Live....... I'd hope they'd be smart enough to include it!

The game includes both single-player and two-to-four player co-op and deathmatch modes over Xbox Live.
Took that straight from the article on Kotaku.
This is too cool man! X06 is already starting out the way a press conference should go!

Saw my friend download and play it while at his house today. It looked great. I'm gonna pick it up and we're gonna try it out co-op soon. It'd be sweet if you can do the ultra-violent and nightmare achievements in co-op, but I don''t know what the mode is like, I've never played it before, only deathmatch.

That's great news. Smart move on Microsoft's part to include online multiplayer. This makes the game a steal.
Now, if they can include online play for sensi, then we'll be rocking. Throw in the inevitable $100 price drop, and the Xbox 360 is starting to look like a really great console.
Let's cross our fingers and hope they don't drop the ball on this one.

The demo was alright, but not worth $10 to me to buy it. I would imagine that there would be quite a market for something like Duke Nukem 3D if Doom sells well, but I'd REALLY like to see an XBLA port of Shadow Warrior. I used to love that game when I was younger.

How does it compare to the Doom included in the xbox Doom 3 port? I was impressed all to hell with that.
I'm enjoying it. A couple of things I would have liked are not included, but well worth the $10 for a Live multiplayer FPS with retro appeal. It's funny what the years do to people ... I haven't played Doom since the original on PC was making the shareware rounds, so I kept trying to look up and down last night. Argh.
It's still 4:3 display, which is fine, but I would have liked side art of some sort for my 16:9 HDTV rather than simple pillarboxing on the sides. A pleasant montage of skulls and flesh springs to mind.
Also, while the pixellated graphics have a classic feel, almost every other classic game on Live Arcade has had an updated graphics option. I expected one in Doom as well ... even though I rarely use the option on the other games.
Including the original music in its raw glory was a nice touch that brought back plenty of memories.
I give it an A- overall for price, features, and fun.

When will the world realize that Doom II is the definitive version of Doom?
What good is a Doom game without the Arch-vile, Mancubus, and Revenant? The original Doom is boring compared to the sequel (I'll still be buying the Live version of course).

I wouldn't be surprised if Doom 2 came out in few months. Doom is the appetizer and Doom 2 is the meal. It's a good way to get an extra $10 out of people.

I tried the demo last nite, and I liked it quite a bit. I have yet to buy any Microsoft points, but this one is actually tempting me. It controls well, and the sound has been remixed a little bit in 5.1. I'm not sure why they don't offer a stretched 16:9 mode though? I have Doom on my Playstation and I've played it on 16:9 TV's in stretched mode and it isn't too bad.
I'm not sure if this is going to be the thing that gets me to actually purchase some Microsoft points. I've downloaded all the Xbox Live Arcade demo's and some of them have really tempted me, like Marble Blast Ultra and Mutant Storm Reloaded and Cloning Clyde and Geometry Wars, but none of them have been so tempting that I've felt the need to be absolutely compelled to purchase the full versions. If this was 400 points, I would have bought some Microsoft points last nite, lol. Hmmm. It is pretty tempting. Not sure I can hold out much longer, lol.

I find it funny that DP's resident videophile uses stretching for 4:3 content on a 16:9 TV. No offense, it's all preference, but I can't stand it myself and find it funny that you like it.
As for purchasing Microsoft points, Marble Blast Ultra is probably the best thing XBLA has going for it. Then there's Smash TV (which can be played co-op online with a friend), Robotron and Geometry Wars, all of which are worth the price of admission.

Actually, I prefer to play 4:3 games on 4:3 displays, but when I've have my retro systems hooked up to a widescreen, I actually prefer "full" mode. Mainly cause the side bar letterboxing is just so damn distracting to me. No question, I do prefer to play my old school retro consoles on a 4:3 display, preferably in RGB of course, but if I do have one of my retro systems hooked up to a widescreen, I live with the stretch modes. Some games actually don't look bad at all in stretch mode. Others look like pure ass. It just depends on the game.

Talk about coincidence I was just mentioning that yesterday. Although I would prefer the origianal unreal tournament (Facing worlds baby) . As far as the doom release goes. I have been a little hesistant to get it.
I pick up the doom 3 collectors it had old school doom versions in that. I played the trial and it really felt the same.
I also feel 800 points is a bit pricey. I wish they were all 400. I would probably buy with without feeling remorse or like i'm getting fleeced.

This is a total jip! Microsoft/Id/Activision whoever, should be ashamed.
$10 for a straight port of the original doom? No. BS. $10 for Doom and Doom II? That's fine with me.
They totally put me off with the demo bullshit. How nigardly of them to let you play only one fucking level. The original shareware version let you play the ENTIRE 1st episode!
Bastards.

Ok, so I've taken the XBLA plunge because of Braid, so now I'm looking for more games to buy. Doom is only 400 points now and I really dug the demo. My question is, do people actively play the multiplayer? I think the single player campaign is probably worth the price, but I would really love to do some deathmatch.

This doesn't answer your question, but I felt compelled to sort of warn you before purchasing it with my own personal experience with this game on XBLA.
I was also a late comer to XBLA. A few years ago I finally got on there and picked up a few games, saw this one, picked it up. I had a few problems with it.
-I found that when I die and restart a level, my weapons are gone. Wiped out - I restart that level with just a pistol and a fist, as if I'd restarted the game on E1M1. I didn't notice this until a bit later, since I don't really die much in this game having played it so long, I think it was on E2M6 I first noticed this. Ok no big deal I thought, I'll just make a savegame at the start of each level and then load that when I die instead. So I tested that out and found that, unbelievably, When I load a saved game on this port, any weapons/ammo I've accumulated are gone. Just a pistol and a fist, regardless of level.
-When I start a new game when I'm already playing a game (i.e. not from the opening menu you first see when you fire up the game in XBLA), the game freezes. Every. Single. Time.
I don't know if maybe it's because I might have a bugged copy of the game, or maybe I have a bugged console (aside from this, I've never had any problems with any XBLA/360 game), but that's my personal experience with this port, so take that as you will. Based on that though, in my view, it's total fucking dogshit.

I've played the game in its entirety and I never noticed any of those problems.
I'd recommend buying it. It controls great with the 360 controller. Last time I played it (a few months ago) there were still people playing it. I had my ass handed to me though ;)

The weapon reset thing would definitely kill it for me, that would make some of the later levels insanely difficult. When I launched the demo last night there was an update, so maybe they patched that out? Coldbeer seems to verify that, and I couldn't find any mention of the problem anywhere else. That's really weird though, it doesn't seem like you could have a broken copy.
How about Quake
Yes please! That and Doom II would be definite downloads for me.

Not really. Doom MP is really only important for about 15 minutes, the time it'll take you to rack up your 100 kills and get your 20g. Beyond that, its pretty pointless to play the least of which is because there is hardly anyone else on to play in the first place. You'd be much better off playing other FPS games on XBL than Doom.
And @ Berserker
Thats because you wern't saving enough. Thats how Doom was back then. You died in level (without saving often, and restarting from your save point that is the key) you'd restart the level with just the pistol. I don't think most of the levels would have been TOO bad, save if you were playing them on UV.

Oops, you're right! I just tested it on Doom95. I can't believe I forgot about that... I guess after playing the game for so long I wasn't really used to dying much, and the few times that I have, I've been too used to modern source ports that autosave.
Still, my main issue wasn't that, but rather the part that I bolded in my previous post - It was wiping out my weapons/ammo on loading a saved game. I specifically remember testing for this: Saving on E2M6 with the rocket launcher that you pick up at the start of that level, and on loading that same game I'd have nothing but the pistol. It was basically like it just wasn't storing that info for whatever reason.
That, put together with the whole insta-freeze on trying to start a new game from within a game... to me that wasn't acceptable for a modern port of a game like this. From what people have said here though it sounds like they've been updating so, if the issue was on their end, hopefully they've fixed it now.
If not, I actually hope the worst-case scenario is that it's some isolated weirdness going on either with the copy I downloaded or with it not liking my console for whatever reason, as I have trusty ole' ZDoom to fall back on as my main way of playing it.

Yupp, I just tried mine again to make sure that I was right. I loaded the game from a save file and had all my weapons, plasma gun, shot gun, machine gun, BFG, etc... all had ammo too. If that issue existed at one point, it seems to be fixed now.
Also, I don't remember my game ever crashing. You should load up your copy of Doom and see if it updates. If so, I think we've solved this mystery.

Well I bought it and sure enough, there isn't anyone playing deathmatch. That kind of sucks but it's not a huge deal. I'm kind of disappointed in myself though, I can't seem to remember alot of the secrets I used to know. I couldn't even get to the secret level. I guess I'll have to gamefaq it once I run through it all once.

That really is true. I tried multiple times throughout the day and never saw anyone. On a whim I tried at like 12:30 at night and was able to join five games in a row. I've still got about 70 kills to go, so hopefully that will continue to happen.

Doom II was released on XBLA for 800 points today. I'm planning on picking it up tonight. It's got split-screen co-op, so I'm going to try to get my buddy to grab it as well.
I never actually got around to finishing the first one after finally buying it, but most of my Doom nostalgia is for part II, so I think this should be quite enjoyable.
