But what about 2011? Or 2070? And 2084 has to be a sentimental favorite.

And you know whats gay? I'll buy it even though I'm definitely buying it for PS2 on Nov. 7th. I was playing the demo today and said to myself, "Man, this game could really use some AA."
I SUCK.

If Super paper mario is coming out then too, Then yes. But i'd rather it came out earlier.
And assassin's creed... Looks good, glad i can play it on 360. Now there is no reason for me to buy a PS3.
And Super smash bros. Brawl.. I CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY IT AS WARIO!!!! :D :D :D :D :D

In 2084, if there is no special edition of Robotron released, I will be sorely ashamed of the industry. Although I feel the same way about Street Fighter 2010 and I know no one else gives a crap. I mean, wow, only 3 years away from such amazing technology! On the other hand we may not make it seeing the huge set back that meteor in 1990 from Thundar caused.

Supreme Commander for the win!!! One of the best RTS games to come out in a long time. I still play Total Annihilation to this day. :D To check out some screen shots just check out Google (http://images.google.com/images?q=supreme+commander&ndsp=20&svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&sa=N&imgsz=). Also you can register at www.supremecommander.com and see all the information about the game and additional in-game videos and screen shots.

2007 will definitely be THE year, at least for me. Wanna know why? Because I'm getting tired of "normal" gaming....and the Wii is probably going to change all of that. I can hardly wait to get one of those things into the house. It's kind of cool that it comes packed with a game. I think that the Wii is even more interesting because of the fact that it's about a month til launch and there's still no info out there about it....not even in Nintendo Power.

2007 looks to be good, but it's gonna have to go some way to beat the almighty year of gaming - 1997.

1994 FTW, imo. Just to name a few:
SNES:
Super Metroid
Donkey Kong Country
Final Fantasy III
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tournament Fighters*
Wario's Woods
Blackthorne
Genesis:
Sonic 3
Sonic & Knuckles
Castlevania Bloodlines
Contra Hard Corps
Virtua Racing
Multiplatform:
Earthworm Jim
The Lion King
Game Boy:
Donkey Kong '94
* - Yeah, there were Genesis and NES versions as well, but the SNES version was the superior one imo.

I don't remember what all else, but there was a ton. It was also fun because we were just starting to hear the rumors about Dreamcast.

2000 was the second, thanks to the Dreamcast.

2007 will in no way be the best year for games. The launches for the NextGen systems pale in comparison to the Dreamcast launch, and following year of 2000 titles (which diskoboy also referenced).
ALL of the games listed in the first post are either sequels, or next gen games that look like Doom 3. Meaning, games with no color, no creative environments but modeled to mimmick real world objects, and dark rooms with lots of shadows.
--
Fun with Facts:
58% of the XBOX360's game library can be found on CURRENT generation game consoles. With 7 more titles being found on the PC, it narrows the 360 list down to a mere 20 games unique to the platform since it's release.
68% of the PSP's game library is comprised of PS2 to PSP ports.
--
The fact that you can own a PS2 or XBox and have 58% of the games 360 owners are playing, with the same core gameplay experience, is insane. This trend doesn't stop with the 360 or PSP. Ubisoft and Midway are just some of the companies re-releasing GameCube games in Wii format. You can PLAY THE ORIGINAL gamecube games on the Wii because it is backwards compatible!!! There is no need to buy Monster Truck 4x4 or Rampage Total Destruction for the Wii. The games between platforms are virtually identical. This is just plain filthy.
There are very few new IP's coming to the market. In-fact one company (Capcom) has managed to churn out brand new IP's on a regular basis. Games such as PN03, Okami, Monster Hunter, Killer 7, Viewtiful Joe, God Hand, Dead Rising, and Beat Down. They do their fair share of porting and sequels, but they are one of the few companies releasing brand new game experiences.
I look at what other companies are doing and it is depressing.
For me it is a dark day for video games. The industry is pushing to capture the dollar of the mass market consumer, and people like myself craving substance are being left hung out to dry.

Bioshock is coming out, but its ilk are few and far between. Gone are the days of creative game titles coming out every single year, and our eyes were bursting with Super Mario this and Sonic that and Command & Conquer this and Thief that.
The days of gaming are dark indeed. There was a brief spark when the DS came out in the form of Lost in Blue and Under the Knife and other original titles, but I haven't found anything on the DS that's really captured my attention in the past 3-4 months.
I anticipate spending fewer dollars this year on games than any other year since I was 15 (and had no income) - and that was 13 years ago.

OOOoohhh, Diddy Kong Racing on the DS? Is the DS a handheld to bring around N64 games that were big hits? Planning on bringing Goldeneye to it? It seems Nintendo and Sony want to reproduce their games from the late 90's and place them on their newer handhelds. I'm all for that if it still looks good and multiplayer is great.

I figured I would bump this up seeing as the holiday season is coming.
A lot of the games I expected this year were actually delayed to 08, notably GTA 4 and SSMB Brawl.
We have had some solid games this year and some great looking ones coming in November. One game that was quite a surprise for me this year was Crackdown I wasn't expecting too much and ended up loving it.

2004 was the best year thanks to Halo 2, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Metroid Prime 2and Knight of The Old Republic 2, among others. As for your list, several key games on it aren't even coming out this year. So again, 2007 is NOT the best year for games, but it's still a great year non the less.

Sorry, but Final Fantasy 13, Burnout 5, Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Unreal Tournament 2007(except maybe the pc version), and Super Smash Brothers Brawl have all been confirmed as being pushed back to 2008. There may be other titles in that list that get pushed back as well. So again, it's another awesome year for gaming, but still not the best year games ever.

Yeah, 2007 is the best year ever, just like 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, oh wait...
Having some perspective helps rather than getting all hyped up about games that aren't even out yet or games that haven't been around long enough to see what kind of lasting effect they have. Personally, I couldn't pick any year as being the best ever for games as great games are too evenly spread out over the years. Even if I just consider my top favorites, they'd still be all over the place. I will say one thing, though, 2007 is definitely NOT a year that I'd say remotely comes close to the best ever, even if there was some good stuff, and I'd be way more inclined to pick a year somewhere between the late 80s and the late 90s than any year in this current decade.

I think 1988 was a great year for video games. Many NES classics were released:
Bases Loaded
Bionic Commando
Blades of Steel
Blaster Master
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Contra
Double Dragon
Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode
Jackal
Life Force
Metal Gear
Skate or Die
Super Mario Bros. 2
Track & Field II
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

1991 for me, as you had the Genesis in full swing, The launch of the Snes, with the Neo Geo, and Turbo still on store shelves. Also you had the Nes on life support, but with many late releases to be had. Let us not forget the Game Boy which by 91 was gaining speed.

Actually I would pick 1983 as the best year. It really seemed like the peak before the Crash. Activision released a bunch of really great games and Atari really improved on their 2600 games with the competition of (the good) 3rd parties.
Assuming the Online Rarity guide is accurate...
Battlezone
Boing!
Bump 'n Jump
Centipede
Crackpots
Dig Dug
Dolphin
Euduro
Frogger, the Offical
Frostbite
Galaxian
Joust
Jungle Hunt
Keystone Kapers
Mario Bros.
Moon Patrol
MS. Pac-Man
Phoenix
Pressure Cooker
Private Eye
Quick Step
Rabbit Transit
Seaquest
Spider Fighter
Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi - Death Star Battle
Thunderground
Vanguard

To me, the best year in gaming was, and will always be 1981.
Being 8 in 1981, during the first arcade explosion....... Man , talk about a great time to be alive?? ;)
The 2 years that followed were almost as good! But I can't argue with the OP..... 2007 was a great year for gaming.
